What the fuck is that abomination on the left? It looks like an industrial safety outfit like from Dead Space, not a super-advanced suit of power armor worn by a super-soldier.

My favorite thing about 343 is how they will autisticly decide something needs broad sweeping changing at the drop of a hat followed by taking years of fan feedback to be slightly convinced that it was not the best decision. This is why they immediately changed the art style in Halo 4 and took until 2021 (presumably) to release a game with the old style. Other times they will immediately get bored with an idea and unceremoniously take it out back and put it down like Old Yeller such as Jul 'Mdama.

Just goes to show how fucked Halo 4/5's artstyle got. Even when they brought back armor sets from the Bungie Halo games in 5, it still looks awkward and wrong. The armor design leaned too far into feeling like something out of an anime, lacking the gritty militaristic feel of the Bungie years. I mean, I like my Mongolian flipbooks as much as the next guy, but it just doesn't work with Halo's artstyle. Hell, the Halo Legends anime anthology stuck to the realistic designs (even Odd One Out) and didn't redesign everything to look like it came out of an entirely different universe.

Just wish it didn't take almost a fucking decade for them to realize that their art direction was garbage.

Infinite looks like it'll at least look good if the recent screens are anything to go by, but for gameplay? I think its just gonna be halo 5's again with slight obvious changes. Music will be nice probably, but other sounds seem really bland.
To be fair, I stopped expecting anything spectacular from 343 over the years

It looks like the collar would eventually cut into the trapezium, as Collar/GRENADIER is just a shield generator drum bolted to the base armor. Like I expect the undersuit to have a breach after a really nasty impact.

What I find comical is 343i canonized the overall disdain towards GEN2 by adding that those within the Spartan Branch were not impressed with its performance. At least they have a sense of humor about their art committee being filled with talentless hacks.

I liked the Halo 5 gameplay, I think it's the right evolution. Reach and 4 got it wrong, everybody should have the same abilities. I hated what I saw in the Infinite demo, sure it's funny to throw a fusion coil at an enemy but the grappling hook doesn't fit in Halo, it's like some higher-up saw Doom Eternal and wanted the same thing.

Well the best way to do it would be to return to Halo 3's way of doing it and have no abilities whatsoever. They're not going to do that, though, because Infinite's multiplayer being free-to-play signals pretty heavily that they want it to be an e-sport shooter.

In the map image they showed at least it looks like the grappling hook is a map pickup akin to the Halo 3 equipment rather than something you spawn with.

I'll be honest, looking back on it, 5's gameplay was leagues better than 4 and Reach and I had more fun with it, but the story was grating to play so it soured my experience some. Though i'm also more of a fan of faster paced FPS games and Doom Eternal has spoiled me... On a similar note, if they do it right, it could be rather fun... but this is 343 we're talking about.

Reach feels to random with the weapon bloom making fights seem luck based, 4 has so many missteps and flaws it's honestly shocking they thought it was a good idea. Halo 5 just feels different to me where I don't exactly hate it, but I struggle to even think of it like Halo.

There's a reason that Halo was most dominant during 2 and 3. Those games have satisfying shooting and enough depth that a good player can have a significant impact on a match.

Final MCC dev update of the year:
  • Game update launching today (out now actually), with the following changes:
    • Season 5 content is being added to the game; the season won't start until next month, but you'll be able to preview the new content. In addition to the Reach items that didn't make it into season 4, at least three armor sets originally from Halo Online are being added (unclear yet whether they're being added to 3 or 4 ETA: they're being added to 3, a total of twelve armor sets in all, along with forearm and leg customization and three options for undersuits; there are also additional weapon and vehicle skins coming to 3 next season).
    • You'll finally be able to disable the chat filter. Your own messages will still look filtered so you can know what parts of your message aren't being sent to those who have filtering enabled. Kind of weird, but hey, better than nothing.
    • Due to changes made with this update, mid-mission saves for Reach, 3, ODST, and 4 will be reset. Halo 3 customization will also be reset, and previously-saved films will no longer play. Unfortunate side effect of the update.
    • Full patch notes here.
  • A large infographic detailing various stats from the past year.
  • An interview with Toros Kose, the creator of the MCC background videos that launched with each game's PC release. Didn't know it was one guy making all of those, so that's neat.
  • Various reminiscences of the MCC dev team, mostly from this past year but also from earlier in development. Highlights include "Halo: Reach except it's pizza time," a Redditor who lost a bet about a Halo 2 bugfix (but still delivered), and the memories from revealing MCC was coming to PC.
  • State of the game update:
    • Various things are planned to debut early next year. Seasons will continue on a roughly two-month cadence; current plan is to go to season 10 and then see if they want to continue from there. Mod support will also be detailed, including a finalized EULA related to modding. New Forge items will be added, and various quality-of-life updates and bugfixes will continue.
    • In addition to these, the custom game browser and PC fileshare are still planned for early next year, so expect flights soon. There are also apparently other super-secret things in development that they're not ready to discuss yet.
  • In closing, they mentioned that the cadence of these dev blogs will likely slow down over the next year now that the active dev work for the PC ports is done. The plan is to release a new one with each season/flight update, as well as continue to show new things through streams and such.
On a side note, if you haven't played Halo 2 Action Sack, you should give it a whirl. There's a gametype called Brute Shoot that's played exclusively on Elongation: everyone has Brute Shots with bottomless clips, the gravity is slightly lowered, and the Sputnik Skull is turned on. It's hilarious watching all the crates bounce around as you fling enemies into the ceiling. Lots of fun.

ETA: The featured playlist for the next few weeks is a community Forge test, with a variety of maps from ForgeHub being brought in for testing. Some of them will be added to the regular matchmaking rotation after the test period is over.

Also check out the Mariner helmet variants in Reach customization for a nice surprise.

Thought you guys might find this interesting. One of the OG Bungie guys has been posting some of the early Halo 2 storyboards and there is some pretty crazy stuff in there. Humans being 100% confirmed to be the Forerunners, Arbiter outright executing both Tartarus and Truth, the fabled Gravemind skull teeth, Chief straight up walking around without his armor, etc.

Edit - Also posted some for Halo 3: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/B1ewzm

I'm glad they shortened the orbital descent sequence down, but damn I wish we could have gotten the Chief doing a dynamic entry into the Pelican, just without Johnson breaking his arm.
Which orbital descent sequence?

Oh, I thought you were talking about the recent patch and I was confused. And yeah, from what I remember that was going to be the mission set on a Covenant carrier, right?

supposedly? I don't think there was anything of it that remained in 2's files though

The new armors they imported from Halo Online for Halo 3 are from 4/5, right? God, I hope we can disable them when they come out. They look completely out of place.

From what I can tell, they're all original, but many have the appearance of prototype versions of 4/5 armors. Agreed that they don't really fit with the Halo 3 sets, especially the chest pieces. I don't see any option in the settings to disable them, and there isn't going to be another game update before the next season, so it looks like the answer is no. I'm guessing that models probably can't be disabled in the same way that skins can; one's just a simple texture swap (or rather, turning off a texture swap), while the other would require changing players' models during the game. I mean, it might be possible, I don't know the intricacies of the Halo 3 code. Might be something to bring up as a feature request.

It also might not be a huge problem overall. I imagine most players will probably keep using the old Halo 3 armors since they look much better. I'm gonna keep using my old set from the last time I played back in 2010 myself.

I don't know how they'd do it, maybe either randomize the pieces, randomize it but keep it a consistent set, or set it to the default Mark VI. The new helmets for Reach look much more in line with its artstyle and were going to be DLC anyways, so I don't mind them being added. I'm gonna be pissed if they include weapon skins for Reach with the new season and we can't disable those, though.
