Wow, in only a couple paragraphs 343i has pissed off basically everyone. All the top posts on r/halo are critiquing this choice, which I also feel is straight up retarded. I like the idea of different styles of coating you can put on your armor, but only if they're supplementary to being able to choose the fucking color.

The devs have been really quiet about this game since the initial demo footage, which naturally got people thinking that they were working on really fixing it up. But announcements like this are really hurting their standing with the community.

Where are people playing the most, online wise, Halo 3 I imagine? Been trying to search for a comp games in either halo 2 or reach and it takes a while to find a lobby.

It's basically just 3 right now, mostly since the ODST update fixed the hitreg and it's the one game everyone wanted on PC. I do wish more people played the other games, but maybe when Infinite comes out there will be a resurgence of people who want classic Halo again.

At this point, Halo: Infinite is quickly becoming a game I do not want to buy. Maybe 343i can win me back by absolutely applogizing for this exceptional mtx scheme, but it is really sad to see a future where I don't get a new mainline Halo game (first time since Halo 2).

Man, this even makes me not want to play MCC.

So it basically sounds like they're using a system similar to Destiny's shaders in Infinite. Same general concept, each shader has a set of pre-determined colors and materials that makes your gear look different depending on which one you use.

The question I have is, will they be like Destiny 1's shaders, or Destiny 2's? In D1, you could only apply a single shader to your entire armor set, so if you didn't like how it looked on part of your gear, you had to suck it up or swap to something new. But in D2, they made improvements to let you mix and match shaders on gear, so you could create a more complex look. It also let you apply shaders to weapons, ships, Sparrows, and Ghosts as well, which further increased customization options.

If it's like the former, and you can only change your entire armor set to a particular shader, then yeah, that'll suck. But if it's the latter and you can change what shader is applied to each part of your armor, then from personal experience, it won't be quite so bad as long as there's a large variety of shaders to choose from. D2 has about 300 shaders now, and players have come up with some interesting designs by mixing and matching. Some are beautiful:

And others are...beautiful in their own way:

I know I'd personally prefer to have complete control over color schemes, but Destiny's shown that even with limitations, there's still a lot of options for customization. Again, the most important thing they need to clarify is whether you can change colors for each piece. If not, then yeah, that'll suck. In Halo 3, with 30 options for three different color areas, there were 27,000 total color possibilities before even getting into armor permutations. There's no way 343 would be able to produce anywhere near that many shaders.

I play a ton of Destiny and I fucking despise the shader system. Annoying and has far too many limitations. Color customization is one of the VERY few areas where Anthem actually did far, far better.

They want to add their own "pattern" designs on top of the traditional Halo customization? Fine, whatever. But there is literally no upside to throwing out the entire system and replacing it with this new shader one, and I think that's what has the community so incensed. And then you add all the sleazy monetization shit they'll inevitably tie all of it into... yeah, no.

Anyone get the new Master Chief novel yet? Any word on how it is?

Somehow out of nowhere Hyper uploaded a video after forever and he's already proved himself at understanding Bungie Era Halo animation better than 343. Also that stagger animation looks great for being done by one guy. But then again he was talented enough to get hired by Respawn and Infinity Ward based mainly on meme reloading animations so.

Not that I don't believe that a company would make up hoaxes to cover up legitimate criticism, but I also know that fans have a tendency to lash out violently over just about any change they dislike, and have for decades (I'm reminded of the death threats Hideaki Anno got over Evangelion's ending that he ended up including screenshots of in The End of Evangelion). There's really no way to prove it either way; even if 343 posted threatening emails they received, there's no guarantee they didn't just send them to themselves.

If it's legit, then people should cool the fuck down and quit threatening harm on the devs just for something as minuscule as colors in a video game. However, if it's a hoax, then 343 should be ashamed of trying to deflect criticism and own up to it instead.

So I'm not sure if it's in the main build, but in the current H4 beta they've removed open chat during matches and they put in a naughty word filter.
Sounds fucking gay.

I, for one, kind of enjoy the "toxic" shitshow that's been MCC multiplayer chat whenever I do play it. Feels like the good old Xbox Live days except with a text chat featured also included.

This reminds me when Bonnie Ross and Kiki Wolfkill wanted to "crack down" on Halo 4 sexism by issuing lifetime bans on Xbox Live for said chat.

Did it work? Well, when I played Halo 4, player count was low compared to Halo 3 and Reach and lobbies were quieter. Don't know.

Compared to this:

"Suck my balls, fag. I'm gonna fuck yer mom for being such a shitty fag at this game." Ah, the good old days of Internet games.

I've been reading up on the drama but don't entirely understand the backlash. I understand why people are angry that something as simple as armor color is being locked but don't understand why people are angry that there well be microtransactions, If the game was pay to play I would understand but the game is going to be a hybrid of pay to play and free to play. I think a good compromise would to make all custimization unlockables if you pay for the game but make all the cosmetics cost real money or be obtained via loot boxes if your playing the free to play multiplayer. Unfortunately, there will still be backlash if a better monetization method is made because the morons on reddit and twitter expect 343 to release a free to play multiplaye mode devoid of monetization.
