I don't recall hearing any whining about the length of 3 either way back when it was originally relevant, so I'm curious: Did people think 3 was too short or too long?

Frankly, replaying it as part of the MCC, I've been finding 3 to be incredibly short if you ignore how long The Ark and The Covenant get dragged out as levels.

Meanwhile, 343 hasn't remotely reached that pedigree. So when they've had three games to get their shit together after people have pointed out they have severe issues with art design, randomly regressing from established Bungie features, and having their games not have tons of fucking bugs, seeing those issues crop up in Infinite while the game is going through a reported development hell, with multiple leads leaving, does not inspire confidence.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Halo 4 functioned at launch.

Halo 5 had stability issues with matchmaking and MCC... You know that story already.

I definitely remember some complaints that it wasn't as long as 2. You can even look at the amount of missions. Halo 3 has 8 full missions, Halo 2 has 13. The Ark and The Covenant were definitely stand outs in terms of length but the missions leading up to that are pretty short too. It was generally forgiven because Bungie had to make a game on an entirely new console.

Yeah, Halo 4 falls into the "art design" and "removing/changing Bungie features for no reason" categories.

Well, of course it did. The 360/PS3 were back in the era where games ran straight off the optical disc. They had to be fully QA'd and tested and checked for bugs before stamping the discs. Unlike this gen, they weren't designed to receive periodic patches.

Halo 1 was unfucked weeks before launch because Bungie was never sure what exactly they wanted it to be (which is understandable for a first game in a franchise), Halo 2 was never unfucked because it just straight up released unfinished due to Bungie's ambition colliding head on with the reality of game development, and then Halo 3, ODST and Reach had decent enough developments. All five games are pretty much legendary outside of some grumbling about 2's difficulty issues, 3's length, and Reach's gameplay choices.

Meanwhile, 343 hasn't remotely reached that pedigree. 343 is basically 'fix one thing, break a bunch of others':The Developer. Halo 4 has a pretty neat story (until all the forerunner shit) and really impressive graphics, art style gets broken, multiplayer is shit, and now you need to read 3 rather long and complicated books to even get the basic premise of the villain.
Halo 5 fixes alot of the multiplayer shit to not be a random clusterfuck, breaks the campaign and story, art design gets even worse, and no fucking BTB/Forge at launch.
Can't wait to see what they fuck up with Infinite. Missing iconic weapons for no fucking reason at all is already confirmed. What's next? No theater? Missing a blood gulch variant AGAIN? No custom games?

The monetization with the free-to-play model. Especially after MCC.

They already implied there might be features missing at launch that get added later since it's a LIVE SERVICE game with a """10 YEAR PLAN""" and all that fucking horseshit. Now that was before they delayed it and brought Staten on so things could have changed since then, but this studio is so fucking incompetent I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if not.

Well, for some positive news and because I like doing them, here's a summary of this month's MCC dev update:
  • A lot of stuff about Halo 4's flight. It's going well so far, with PC/Xbox crossplay working out good. The low participation in the ODST flight might be due to fatigue on both players and devs, but they've sent out 500k invites to this one to hopefully get some new players in. A new patch just went out with this flight, fixing some issues and adding support for Reach crossplay for testing. Also, the long-standing Reach bug of your emblem not showing up on your armor is finally being fixed. Flights aren't going to end with Halo 4's PC launch, there will be more to come to test additional features.
  • Another section about graphical improvements coming to MCC on Xbox Series S/X (this will never not be a dumb name for a console, Microsoft). You can play up to 120 FPS at 4K on the Series X, and at 1080p on the Series S. Also included are additional graphical enhancements like increased draw distance, faster loading times, and an FOV slider.
  • Community questions:
    • Halo 4 DLC armor will be patched in at some point, but it won't be available in Spartan Ops at first. Weapon skins will be, including some brand-new skins.
    • Double XP events aren't going anywhere, so look forward to more Soon™.
    • After Halo 4's PC release, updates will continue to come out like the custom game browser and PC file share. MCC development is far from done.
    • Kind of a non-answer on matchmaking for Spartan Ops. Might be part of a larger matchmaking update for other campaign modes as well.
    • Halo 4's weapon skins won't necessarily be tied to specific loadouts. You can set up a universal skin for a weapon, then override that skin in a loadout if you wish. Weapon skins will stay applied when you pick up someone else's weapon, unlike those in Halo 1 or 3.
    • Most satisfying feature to implement: Match Composer.
    • Anniversary graphical issues on Xbox One X in Halo 1 and 2 campaigns are still being looked at. Lot of other graphics changes coming out that might affect these issues.
    • Acrophobia skull should be available to all players now (something I wasn't aware of). Other limited-time content like the golden Halo 1 skins may reappear in the future.
    • Adding subtitles during gameplay for all games is being looked at (besides Halo 1 and 4 which already have them).
    • No plans for new customization options for Halo 2 yet, but Halo 3 will be getting some additional skins in season 4, including a corroded Gauss Warthog skin.
    • The custom game browser won't support player-owned dedicated servers at release, but they're open to including that functionality in a later update.
    • They'd like to find ways to include modded content in MCC, and there will be more mod updates in the coming months.
  • Design updates:
    • Custom game browser is coming along nicely and it's working in the studio. Won't be at the Halo 4 launch, but hopefully it'll be flighted soon.
    • Regional server selection will come out with Halo 4. You'll have to select a minimum of two servers from your top five ping regions, up to as many as you'd care to include. If your matchmaking times are too long, you can always select more servers.
    • With all the new features coming in like input-based matchmaking and regional server selection, there may be some playlist updates in the future to address matchmaking times. They'll be keeping an eye on it post-launch. Ranked playlists are having some population issues, and they're trying to incentivize ranked play more.
    • PC file share is still being worked on. Hopefully launching in the coming months.
    • Several new graphical settings are coming with Halo 4's launch. UI gamma and detail can be adjusted independently of in-game settings. You can also fine-tune graphical settings for things like shadows, details, and effects. These will apply to all games with the Halo 4 update, and a later update will let you tweak each game's settings individually.
    • With season 4's launch, Halo 4 will get improved customization options. You can customize individual armor pieces and view them in 3D while you're making your choices, and the Champions Bundle weapon skins will be included as part of the season 4 unlocks. The bundle's armor skins will be added in a future update.
  • State of the game section, starting with the unfortunate news that the Reach armor originally planned for season 4 will be delayed to season 5. Technical issues, unfortunately.
  • Current status of various features in development:
    • Coming with Halo 4 PC: some UI improvements, initial implementation of FPS cap, some video options, input-based matchmaking, regional server selection, Xbox/PC crossplay, VFR improvements to Reach and H2A, PC graphical features like FOV sliders (only to the Xbox Series S/X for now (still a dumb name))
    • Actively in development: view model adjustment, Steam account linking, PC file share, custom game browser, double key binds, per-game audio options, more seasonal content for seasons 4 and on, more text chat improvements
    • In design iteration: additional mod support, additional accessibility support
    • In backlog: idle system improvements, split screen on PC, HDR support on PC
  • Closing notes from ske7ch, thanking everyone for their support.

Kind of a non-answer on matchmaking for Spartan Ops. Might be part of a larger matchmaking update for other campaign modes as well.
Finally. I was worried since the original version of the MCC had no matchmaking feature for the playlists and Spartan Ops. Glad that they're thinking about adding matchmaking to the campaigns.

Happy to be rid of that dopey smiley face in cutscenes, that shit didn't match my Spartan at all.

No Community Update this week due to """US "elections"""", which I don't think anyone believes.
In the meantime, better go to Kroger and stock up on Eggo Waffles and Pringles to get that warthog skin!

Watch more people play MCC than Infinite and then watch as Unycuck (Unyshek) does nothing to address the everyday fans he abandoned to go work for MicroShaft.

Halo 4 is dropping next Tuesday and I doubt that it's gonna have a large multiplayer population for long. I've got no intention of playing it for anything more than the achievements personally, but we'll see what Season 4 adds for unlockables.

I've stopped playing the MCC because of the Battle Pass gimmick, I know that I will never get to unlock the stuff that I used to have on my characters (Kat's robot arm in Reach, Dare playermodel in ODST, Buck's voice in Reach Firefight, etc.). If every campaign had matchmaking, I would have played them over and over like on the 360 version of Reach. I know that feature is coming but it's way too late.

Sucks for you, nerd.

I managed to get all of the rewards under Season 1 by the time Halo 3 came out, and that was just predominantly from regular playing during the first two months since MCC/Reach first came out on PC and doing only a couple of weeks of the weekly singleplayer challenges for Halo 3.

Not like it's that hard to rack up Season Points now.

They should've implemented a Battle Pass system for Infinite's monetization.

Or, less ideally, charge a couple bucks for "premium skins."
