Wait a second. Did anyone else hear this about how DSP holds the controller while playing Sekiro/FromSoftware games?

He is holding his controller in an absolutely bizarre way to "control the camera". It would be like how halfcoordinated holds his controller I think.

That's how you have to hold a controller when your hand looks like this:

I KINDA have to stay on Phil's side here, running (circle) and camera movement at the same time (thumb) is bizarre. I also hold my controller way different if I want to do that. For example when the lock on fades away (yes this can happen) and you have to search for the enemy, preferred running to not get hit.

However. He explicitly says "During long boss fights". Why would you move the camera? Lock on to the enemy, camera moves automatically. Even against multiple enemies you can just change the lock on target, which should be done as this makes parry way easier.

So yes, his method has a ground to stand on. But you should not use it.

Ok, that kind of explains it.

Maybe it's because I'm never trying to do both run and circle the camera at the same time. Usually I run then fix the camera in two different motions.

Just getting caught up on Phil vids now. At the part where he's absolutely shitting himself over the Lone Shadow Longsword fight.

:stress:

I was genuinely surprised when he knocked down the bull on the first try... but he's redeemed himself with this fight.

Yeah it's some weird claw grip you have to do but the way Phil showed the camera looked fucking weird. Looked like he wasn't using it the way I do because he had no fingers on the shoulders. This was during his actual x2 Ape bossfight though.

I hold the controller where my right index is curled over the Circle/B button, middle and ring finger on the right shoulders with the thumb on the right stick. It's just like how you play souls games if you want to be able to run and use the camera efficiently.

Agreed. I use this method too. Still holding the controller with the right hand, index finger to a hook and reaching Circle (or A for Nintendo controllers), while moving the camera with the thumb like normal. Works like a charme and is used for just a few seconds anyway. So I have no clue (yes I do) why he calls for an ambulance when Mister Street Fighter Pro Player has to bend one of his fingers and has to sabotage his own controls. Gout reached his hands I guess, he whines like a baby when he uses a mouse for too long and recently in SuckyRAW. I get why his body turned into a fragile glass bone puppet, but KAHM AHN, as a "life long gamer" you have to have some kind of trained super fingers.

Or, you know, get a controller where you can remap the buttons and have these paddles where you can hold run and control the camera without having to do a hoof-grip.
I dunno. The traditional PS4 controller is quite good and you have to experiment to find a really good alternative that fits your standards. Either it's not comfortable, the buttons are hard to press, button layout is not good, buttons too loud, material is garbage... It's not worth buying one (or some) just for, let's say, Sekiro, tbh. Personally I don't even like those buttons at the back, I press those buttons all the time by accident. I don't own a Steam-controller, but one of mine has also backside buttons, so just my few cents (no Phil you won't get those cents, they are mine).

So I searched for a PS4 controller with backside buttons (apparently called "paddles") and I have to say those are expensive as fuck. 140€ for a regular one (around 160 US-$) and they seem to break quite often. Hard to blame Dave for not getting one. Bending the finger is way easier, which he won't do because he is a whiny baby.

EDIT: YES. Exactly as Prince Lotor (post below) described and visualized it. And I thought I was smart for doing it this way. It was, but people were smart before me. Or is it smart? Isn't it more like, uuuuhm, intuition?

LMAO What the fuck? He's a fucking moron. 'Professional Gaymer' with a 'muh 10 year legacy' has never heard of the 'Claw' grip. Seriously, try this autistic shit Phil does for yourself, he:
  • Places the pad of his index finger on the right thumbstick to move it
  • He then uses "My pinky, or one of my other fingers" to hold in the O button
  • He physically cannot use the R1 or R2 buttons from this position, so he has to change back to a regular grip to use them
The 'Claw' grip, as it is colloquially known, is:
  • Your right thumb on the right thumbstick
  • Your right index finger moved up from the shoulder buttons to press the face buttons ( [], O, X, and Triangle on a PS controller)
  • and your middle finger moved up from gripping the controller to press the shoulder buttons ( R1 & R2 ), or middle finger moved up to R1 (right bumper) and ring finger moved up from gripping to R2 (right trigger)
People have been doing this since at least the first Halo in 2001 or earlier

Phil has developed his own special controller grip style. . .JUST FOR RUNNING AWAY, and it makes him incapable of attacking until he is 'done' running away! :story::lit::lit::lit::lit::lit:

I'm a basic bitch gamer that's never heard of the claw grip, so thanks for that explanation.
It sort of became more well known from the console competitive FPS multiplayer scene where people are trying to get any advantage they can. The games don't allow free remapping of buttons from a menu to even the playing field, and people started using it because it allows you to aim and jump and shoot simultaneously. Phil developed his because he wanted to run away from an AI better :lit:

I used to claw with my left hand playing DMC4 as Dante because the D-pad switches fighting styles, allowing me to swap styles on the fly mid-attack.

I certainly can't knock Phil for having an alternate controller grip style, but I will absolutely make fun of him for the uselessness and ineffectiveness of that style, and his pathetic low-T pigroach reason for coming up with it. The sad narc fucker probably thinks himself a genius gaming pioneer or some grandiose shit because he thinks he's the first person to even think of gripping a controller differently, barring those with physical disabilities that require a different grip.

Where did he leave off last time? i assume he beat Owl but did he fight the real monk?

His way of doing shit is so bizarre. If you're locked onto the enemy you don't need to be controlling the camera. Once you're locked on the game does a pretty good job of making sure that you see the enemy as you're moving around. It does have issues where it randomly un-targets.

I use Mouse + Keyboard for Souls and Sekiro and have had no problems.

Probably because his new tactic for beating Sekiro bosses is running around doing little chip attacks after they do one big swing.
Personally I have only used the claw grip after farming. Pop green balloon, kill everyone, pop gold balloon, run around while holding square to pick up all the goods. How he uses it for bosses, especially after he locks on is bizarre unless you are looking to run away and be mindful of corners/walls.

DSP just said someone has sent him a "spoiler-free guide". Says he's going to use it today because he doesn't want to miss out on big story things/bosses. But it doesn't contain any story-spoiling things, guyz!

Fucking knew it. Probably had that shit ever since the Ape fight. Sometimes there's doubt in myself when I'm here accusing him of some crazy shit like him using a guide and lo and behold, he just confirms it later on when everything is said and done.

"I'm naaaaught using a guide dudes."

"Yeah I'm using a guide, spoiler free though."

Fuck me dude.

It’s also weird that he doesn’t know this considering modified claw grips are fairly common in any non-6 button fighting game, so you’d think an old FGC type would at least think on using that.

Phil's ability to flip-flop never ceases to amaze.

"I'M NOT USING A GUIDE YOU FUCKING IDIOTS!"

days later

"OF COURSE I'M USING A GUIDE! DO YOU WANT ME TO MISS SECRETS?!"
He seriously does this for a lot of things I've JUST noticed and I feel really fucking dumb for not catching on the pattern.

-Gets defensive about accusation and denies everything
-Makes you doubt yourself
-Admits to thing he was being accused of as being true but with some mental gymnastics to justify it
