🐱 ABC drops Roseanne show after racist tweet

ABC has pulled the plug on the revival “Roseanne.”

The move comes after series star Roseanne Barr made a comment on Twitter Tuesday morning referring to former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett as the offspring of the “Muslim Brotherhood & Planet of the Apes.”

“Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said in a statement.

Barr deleted her tweet about Jarrett not long after posting it. She followed it up with an apology which read, “I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me-my joke was in bad taste. I am now leaving Twitter.”

The revival of the classic sitcom was set to air a 13-episode eleventh season this fall. The move represents a remarkable turn of events for the network, Barr, and a show that finished the season as the No. 1 scripted primetime television series in the 18-49 demo, according to Nielsen live-plus-same say numbers.





Just two weeks ago at ABC’s upfront presentation, Barr introduced Disney-ABC Television Group president Ben Sherwood, joking that he was “the guy responsible for most of my tweets.” Sherwood and Barr hugged onstage, and the the exec noted that ABC had not had television’s No. 1 show in 24 years. Dungey, during her portion of the presentation, bragged that “The premiere ratings even took us by surprise,” claiming that 1 in 10 Americans has seen the “Roseanne” revival premiere.

At least they had a decent reason to cancel this one. They dropped Last Man Standing despite it being their second highest rated comedy, I don't think they ever gave a reason for it.

If I'm remembering correctly, they gave some generic PR reason for dropping it, but it largely had to do with the fact it wasn't an ABC studios produced show, and ABC is trying to shift into a lineup primarily produced by their own studio. I couldn't tell you the specific reason why that's a good thing for them off the top of my head, but I'm betting it is cheaper to produce or lets them sidestep certain rules or something along those lines. I personally buy it, the politics thing always sounded like an excuse Tim Allen came up with. I've never seen his show, but I've heard it isn't political in the slightest, so the logic was basically "Tim said he is a Republican, therefore that must be why it was canned." which never made sense given Roseanne was greenlit right around the same time, and not only is she way more vocal than Allen about her views, but she's said way more batshit insane stuff over the years and already had not great PR around her.

Basically, when it comes to TV stuff, it's usually safe to assume money is ultimately the biggest reason decisions are made.

It'll likely be picked up by another network in a few months, but I sincerely doubt Roseanne herself will be involved. They'll most likely kill off the character and soldier on, since apparently decent amount of the staff and cast are less than happy about the tweet.


Personally, I think it was horrible, but honestly Roseanne is famously a nutjob so it was only a matter of time before something like this happened. Don't be surprised when a monkey throws shit.

It enables them to make money from all second window revenue options. If they own the show, they sell it in syndication, get international sales, and streaming/home video. For a show someone else owns, they usually only get the ad revenue from airing it and streaming it on their site.
