Yeah, I know Buzzfeed sucks, but my sister showed me this and I had to share it:

There have been rumors throughout the years — like the recent one that the author might be Handbook for Mortalswriter Lani Sarem.
Then, on Aug. 2, a statement was published to a FictionPress account that claimed to belong to the author of "My Immortal."
Then, on Aug. 27, another update was published — this one stating plainly and simply, "No, I am not Lani Sarem."

The internet sleuths went to business. Tumblr user pipistrella theorized that the author in question was YA novelist Rose Christo, who has a memoir — Under the Same Stars — in the works with Macmillan's St. Martin's Press.
Pipistrella pointed to a screenshot that seemed to show Christo logged into the FictionPress account that published the statements.
Christo responded to the rumors via her Tumblr, claiming that "Macmillan Publishers hired a lawyer to vet [her] over the course of three days," and that she provided proof as to her connection to "My Immortal" as well as other events included in the upcoming memoir.

Man though, I can't blame the actual person who wrote My Immortal if they never want it known that they did. I personally wouldn't want my resume to include Dumblydore saying “WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING YOU MOTHERFUKERS!”

I don't know what you're talking about; I'd want that on my tombstone if I'd written the masterpiece that is My Immortal.

I've seen a lot of Tara Gillespie claims over the past few days. A few days ago I stumbled upon https://taragillespie.tumblr.com/, which is a few years old. It's convincing, but it's not hard to pretend to be someone embarrassed by how they acted as a teenager, and saying you're THE XXXbloodyrists666XXX is guaranteed to get you a big following on somewhere like Tumblr.

Personally, I hope she's never found and remains locked in her goffick bubble of time forever. It's like that Sherlock Holmes poem where it's always 1895.

A rainy snowstorm batters the window-pane
As night descends upon this fabled goffick tale:
A black flying Mercedes Benz with a license plate reading 666 splashes through the rain,
The red and black of the Hot Topic sign begins to fail.
Here, though the world explode, still survives the goffick heaven, HELL (geddit, becuz i'm goffick)
And it is always two-thousand and seven.

There is a comic of this, and it is glorious.

I have this sick feeling in my stomach that millennial spergs will attempt to recreate the angst of the early 2000s. I know I'm not alone in this one.

I know of it only because a passed former friend used to adore it when we were younger. It reeks of the "rawr" language and has that emo/scene vibe. You don't know if it's legit by an emo or mocking one. You don't want to read, but you do. It's that bad.

Please put it back in the grave before they make it into another fandom, for christs sake.

If you mean a fandom around My Immortal, you're too late.

As weird Harry Potter fanfics go, I always preferred hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I figured My Immortal was probably a parody on the basis that Tara mistakenly calls Tom Riddle "Tom Bombadil" at one point. I can't believe a barely literate teenager would be familiar with a minor character who appears only in the book of Lord of the Rings.

I'm fairly sure it's a trollfic, Marty McFly turns up at one point, and later on the author accidentally calls Voldemort 'Darth Valer'

I've always been convinced that it was a parody, but even if it somehow didn't start as one, it definitely ended as one. How can you read something like "Letz go lizzen 2 GC and kut ourselvz 666!11” said Hermoine." and take it as anything other than a joke? Either way, I'd love to hear from the author just to know what was going on in her head ten years ago. Watching all that go down in real time was a blast.

Ironically the writer of that fic is openly ashamed of it.

My personal theory is that it started as a genuine fic. If you manage to dredge up any fics from 2007, you'll see a lot of similar tropes done completely in earnest; the insane name, overwrought descriptions of clothes, and author notes are all very much products of their time. Having been one of those kind of fanfic writers--and, later, having parodied those fanfic writers--it's all done too perfectly in the first few chapters to have been anything but genuine.

I think, though, that later she was either genuinely hacked and someone took over the writing, or the troll chapter (where Enoby goes to Prep Hell) is where Tara wised up and mocked her own writing before going into full troll mode.

Can I have the link to your fanfiction account? Send it over with a full name, address, and selfie too, please. Sharing is caring.
