Culture Author of "My Immortal" Possibly Found

There have been rumors throughout the years — like the recent one that the author might be Handbook for Mortalswriter Lani Sarem.
Then, on Aug. 2, a statement was published to a FictionPress account that claimed to belong to the author of "My Immortal."
Then, on Aug. 27, another update was published — this one stating plainly and simply, "No, I am not Lani Sarem."

The internet sleuths went to business. Tumblr user pipistrella theorized that the author in question was YA novelist Rose Christo, who has a memoir — Under the Same Stars — in the works with Macmillan's St. Martin's Press.
Pipistrella pointed to a screenshot that seemed to show Christo logged into the FictionPress account that published the statements.
Christo responded to the rumors via her Tumblr, claiming that "Macmillan Publishers hired a lawyer to vet [her] over the course of three days," and that she provided proof as to her connection to "My Immortal" as well as other events included in the upcoming memoir.

As weird Harry Potter fanfics go, I always preferred hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I figured My Immortal was probably a parody on the basis that Tara mistakenly calls Tom Riddle "Tom Bombadil" at one point. I can't believe a barely literate teenager would be familiar with a minor character who appears only in the book of Lord of the Rings.

Stuff like that and the Clerks reference (This job wouls be great if it wasn't for the fucking students!) always struck me as trollin'.

The only reason I've said this much is that I just discovered the existence of this memoir today. Quite frankly, it irks me that I'm being used to sell a book.

Pretty much. It's a very exaggerated sob story with kernels of truth here and there (e.g., we were separated as children but largely of her choice, neither of us was in foster care, and she's rejected my attempts to reconnect with her since) to better sell the memoir - why else coincide it with the revelation that you're the legendarily worst fanfic author ever?

She and I were separated about five years before she wrote that fic.

So while I can't answer specifically, I can provide you with this: my sister was always wildly intelligent and something of a prodigy. We both had opportunities to skip grades.

There's no way she became stupider in those five years (though her going full Elizabeth Warren might indicate otherwise, ha). Her writing was far better than that as a child, and the manner in which "My Immortal" was written was one I can recall her loving to make fun of.

Again, she refuses to speak to me (which was always fine with me until I learned about this memoir built on a lie to the contrary), so I can't give you a definitive answer but a very, very probable yes.
