Nolan's The Odyssey - Potentially could be epic or an epic flop.
"How have you sailed from Troy?"
"In a trireme."
"A trireme? You're using longboats."
"No, I'm not."
"Anyway, where did you get it? A longboat is a 16th Century Scandinavian vessel."
"A viking may pillage southwards in the Winter..."
"Are you saying Vikings raided Ithaca?"
Remember the last few episodes of GoT with the attack on kings landing? the set looks identical. Seriously, that wall, the gate. It looks like they just borrowed it from asset storage.
I'm not watching a shitty cam rip of an even shittier film out of curiosity, but I am curious if it's a final edit because some of these scenes are ridiculous looking. No way a seasoned director shat out something this bad.
I thought it was maybe Qarth. I can't find a clip from KL for the last season, but they did build a huge wall set for Qarth for season 2. It's not a perfect copy, but it's very similar. And makes Nolan look even cheaper, because the show managed to build that on an HBO budget.
However, I think I found the real one.
GOT Season 3 filmed this place (Ait Ben Haddou) as "Yunkai":
But covered much of it up with CGI and used an existing wall as the main gate:
This same town is clearly the city of 'Troy'
And the wall is very similar to the wall used by GOT, so similar I'm almost certain they're just reusing it with some slightly different decorations, and digitally extending it in front of the city.
I wish a filmmaker would be brave enough to make an adaptation of an ancient work as accurately as humanly possible.
Get people that look how ancient Greeks looked, build accurate Greek ships based on ancient depictions and finds, give the actors actual period-accurate clothing, armor and weapons, and follow the story as closely as you can.
Everything short of making them all speak ἑλληνιστί.

Can you get me that scene without the UI over it? I want to add some sound effects. It's begging for some heavy breathing as she runs and a "thwoong" sound as the arrows and spears fly. Maybe some coconut sounds for the horse bits.
Or you know, anybody who wants to do it.
EDIT: Also, is that fucking horse bronze? There's a reason you want the horse to be made of wood and even with wood you'll be stifling in a Greek day inside that thing. If it's Bronze, then all you'll get will be cooked Greeks within a couple of hours.
It seems that there's a lot of clout watchers... Mostly Redditors and puritans will only go to the 70mm screenings if they can find a slot.
Gen pop might go see it in regular to see the hubbub and if there aren't any serious set pieces that demand a larger screen they won't really go see it twice unless it's for Instagram pictures.
I think I have seen Ellen Page running scene a dozen times already and I can't stop laughing. It's like watching a toddler trying to run for the first time.
"Everyone, run! Get to the longhouse!"

"What is it? What's wrong?"
[bwum, bwum, bwum]
"The Sea Peoples, they're..."
[bwum, bwum, bwum]
"They're right behind us, aren't they?"
[BWOM]
"Fuck yeah they are."

"And... and our Bronze Age?
[agonized string ensemble Shepard tone plays over 35 hard cuts in a third as many seconds]
"Collapsed."
[BWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM]
The way she jumps back after being hit by the second arrow, to pretend she was pinned to the horse, is so bad....
What were they thinking?
If you dont have money for the CGI, at least play with the camera angles
I'm 15 minutes in and there are two white people in love and about to make love before it cuts to black. Does Christopher Nolan need to be investigated for ties to White Supremacist hate groups?
The responsibility may have to fall on people who actually know what they're doing, like amateur cosplayers from third world countries and impoverished Eastern Europeans, or fat men playing with AI models. There's no way somebody as unqualified as a professional filmmaker could do it.
For definite? I am finding it very hard to find clear pictures of it. Everything is through his shitty grainy filters. I found this:
It looks like its cast from something. And those legs are really looking like they are. The banding on the body looks more like strips of metal. Like you can warp wood like that a bit, I'm not an expert, but I don't think it's easy or quick. And look at how bent around it is from the underside.
Yeah, like this does not look like rood. The head and legs could be, but they're like if you might be able to get out of a small carved piece but you'd need a colossal block of wood to carve something like that at that scale. And it would be heavy as fuck (you don't really hollow wood out for carvings).
Okay, I found this publicity shot:
So I guess yes, that's wood after all. But I'm not sure this is even the same horse as in the shots. Maybe this is just shitty model making - that it's not wood or they've cleverly done something with wood on the outside a bit, but it doesn't look like a wood sculpture to me.
And why is it half-sunk into the sane in the shots? Did they dig an enormous pit to put the lower half in and then fill it in around the horse, purely so that they could make the Trojans think that they had... half-buried it for reasons?
I don't understand any of this. A wooden horse isn't going to sink half-way into the beach in the water. Hell, a wooden horse would float away in the water. So did they half-bury it whilst the tide was out so that it wouldn't float away when the tide came in? But why not just leave it further up the beach? I'm so confused!
