I got into the trades in part because every retarded boomer was telling me and every other kid my age that college and an office or medical job was the only way to a good life. Not being a retard myself I could see that if everyone was trying to get those jobs we would end up in the musical chairs game that white collar jobs have become. I decided to side step that and it hasn't been bad. Obviously the boomer economy effects everyone and I feel the squeeze but I have a real skill set that can weather any storm. If I survive the nuclear war I'll still be in whatever the new middle class looks like.

Edit: obviously I'm talking about one trade, I can't speak as much to plumbers or electricians, but the buddies I have in those trades don't seem to regret their choices either. I can't say the same for about 40% of my highschool friends who did take the boomer advice and saddled themselves with $80k-$100k of debt before they earned a penny

My brother, I'm a Zoomer and I'm in the exact same industry. I work across the shop floor from you in lathes. You're not wrong. We're paid for the knowledge of how not to crash a machine. Setting up a mill is something I've witnessed and feel like I'll royally fuck up, and setting up live tooling on lathes is a fun test of my patience.

That being said, I love my work. I love the tingles my little bishop gets when I nail a set-up first time around and hit that fucking stupid tenths tolerance some jackass engineer thought was a good idea.

Dope shit, I did swiss lathes for a bit, live tooling is really fun and interesting, some pants shitting clearances, but fun. You are right that the hazing on the floor drums a lot of potentially good dudes out and it's retarded, I got lucky and learned from some old timers who were genuinely happy to see younger guys excited to learn but that's the minority. This is the boomer hate thread though so let's be real, that boomer crabs in a bucket mentality is going to exist in every industry untill they are gone, it just take on a more feminine catty snitch ass form in other jobs. The difference for us is that we can look at the boomer and point to tangible black and white metrics to win the argument. If its to spec, low scrap rate and meets efficiency numbers you win, even better if you can shake a few seconds out of the cycle. It probably sounds like I'm trying to sell the trades and I guess to a point I am, but my bigger point is that the trades were the engine of the middle class and boomers ruined it, purposely, out of greed and laziness. If we are going to reverse the damage the boomers have done to this country the stink they put around the trades needs to be removed. It's sad to me seeing young people who understand that the boomers fucked everything up adopted the same mindsets and attitudes that caused the boomers to fuck everything up. Trades are just a broken as white collar jobs. The trade guilds put all kinds of restrictions and caps on the kind of work you can do with you qualifications. I was talking to my handyman the other day and he was telling me how getting a Master certification in any trade is a complete waste of time as once you have it you are cut off from 99% of available work as you will only be allowed to take jobs for a Master tradesman.
