The best fan project for Diablo is Grim Dawn. Besides being an excellent ARPG by itself, it has a mod that gives it the entirety of Diablo 1 and 2 in the Grim Dawn engine with all of the benefits of that engine and multiplayer.
It’s literally the entirety of those two games redone to be better in every aspect while retaining the original art style, script, and music. And you get a whole other massive game on top of it. I highly recommend it while the game is $3 on sale right now and and the DLC packs are 50% off
Grim Dawn is only ok. It's more of a spiritual successor to Titans Quest than D2 because of their pick two skill trees, build your own class system. I know some really like that, but I do not. I lost interest I think I'm Act 2.
The best successor to Diablo 2 is Marvel Heroes, a live service, mmo-lite ARPG headed by former D2 Dev David Brevik. It was dead for almost a decade until some Russian backwards engineered the server infrastructure so privately hosted servers could be run. I think even now a lot of the exact numbers for things are just best guesses due to that being server side code, but it works.
Their were ~50 characters that were equivalent to about a D2 and a half in terms of skill trees(meaning half a full character). Less ways to build but each Character/Class had unique mechanics that made them interesting. I really enjoyed War Machine that had a heat mechanism where abilities generated heat until he maxed out, then you had to use overheat abilities to burn it off.

Kamala is not preferred, but she isnt an absolute no.
I don't deal with absolutes, but Kamala is probably as close as you can get to an absolute no. Her run fucked over their finances by pissing off mega donors and I honestly believe they'd rather kill her than let her run again.
