I’m not saying for certain that Russia has super secret submarines hanging off the coast of Washington DC waiting for the go signal. For all we know Russia’s entire fleet has rotten away and what we think we hear are just fishing boats towing subwoofers around. But to be absolutely convinced you know the full details of what is considered classified information by literally everyone is asinine.
Submarine tl;dr 2 diesel-electric boogaloo: I'm not being hyperbolic or chanting USA to say that the US is not balanced and set the standard insanely high.
You both are retarded niggers. Yes propellers matter, because cavitation and surface drag are the two major sound propitiation of a submarine (Toshiba got
shafted for selling CNC machines to the Soviets). But:
1) Thermoclines exist
2) The US the
SOSUS array system. While not perfect you go from needle in a hay shed to needle in a haystack
3) At speed, generally you can track a nuclear sub following temperature gradient trails on satellite. Only the most recent US submarines (Seawolf/Virginia) are capable of closed loop cooling, and only below cruise speed iirc.
4) MAD and it's successor (GAD) are the sure-shot sub detectors... But you have to do lots of legwork mapping the specific gravity of areas, and fly around with a big ass plane during a war to conduct ASW ops.
5) Conventional subs also have to surface and have the operational reach of 1/10th of a nuclear one. Much harder to detect, much smaller search box.
Russian (soviet) doctrine has shifted from forward patrol (the GIUK gap dash) to area denial and deterrence. Who needs to cross the Atlantic if you can hang out in the arctic? Soviets carriers were designed for area denial ops, enough to time to kill US subs and let the nuclear sub force retaliate.
No idea about China but probably a half decent copying of the general idea.
China's somewhere between Germany and the French at 1/3rd the cost. the nuclear attack subs are cultural revolution era relicts. In less flattering terms, the PLAN sucks. A PLAN operation like a GIUK gap dash idea is stupid because:
1) Everyone in east asia's SLOC is within missile range and choke-pointed in Malacca (Singapore)
2) The Chinese consider conflict with the US SLOC inherently nuclear.
3) The PLAN couldn't build the ships to contest the pacific yet
4) Even if the PLAN did, it the attrition rate going through the "First island barrier chain" would be atrocious (and there's a second, third, chain too).
5) Therefore the PLAN is restricted to the South China Sea (SCS), East China Sea (ECS), and Yellow sea. Only the SCS is deep enough for effective submarine ops.
This is why "Taiwan independence"pushed by the US/Japan and "Ryuku independence" pushed by the Chinese are major red lines. China views this as
the threat to its economic lifeline. The US views it as breaking the best tool to blockade China and defend the west coast. Japan is afraid that China will start China v Japan round three directly with nukes and completely dismantle Japan (Despite the "no first use", the PLA strategy for Japan is de facto inital decapitation nuclear strike). Taiwan is a better defended inter-war Poland but either gets absorbed by China or Japan, and sold out by the US (none of which are appealing options).
