I think it's multifaceted. To some degree I have fallen into a mild paranoia not of men specifically but simply people larger than me in specific city sections because wow, dangerous parts of town are dangerous. I think a part of it that I've personally noticed is it seems like a side effect of the sheer population online and more horror stories people share about things that happened to them that subsequently can become a new subconscious fear. I think the chronic online-ness makes people forget the people outside are just people and not an innate threat ready to ape out on them like a tethered, rabid dog. It's not just zoomer women. I remember getting into a minor spat online with a Gen X friend of mine about this years ago when the #YesAllWomen hashtag was going around. She'd made a histrionic post suggesting that ALL women are ALWAYS terrified of ALL men and I'm like...wat. Someone recommended an excellent book here years ago called 'The True Believer' (1951) that does an amazingly insightful job describing this exact pattern of behavior. In a reductive nutshell it's that overwhelmingly for people joining fanatical movements it's less about the actual beliefs and more about the structure underlying those movements that they're drawn to, that play on their psychological needs and desires. The sense of purpose of being part of a larger cause, any cause, sense of identity and belonging and acceptance in an in-group of the special, righteous few in an impure world, scratches an itch, satisfies a craving. They fall easily into place in the systems of reward and punishment and power hierarchies leveraged to maintain control in these movements. And the longer and deeper someone is in a fanatical movement, the more likely they are to be sucked into another, even when it's an opposing belief, because they've been conditioned to respond more strongly to the types of manipulation used. Like cults, or abusive relationships, realizing it's fucked and deciding to leave is only part of the process of leaving, staying gone, and not just winding up in another. I doubt he's engaged particularly deeply with the tenets of any of the positions he's been adopting in quick succession, it's been about searching for the next hit, the next fix. And more-or-less mainstream troonshine is some pure-grade cult juice that you'd usually have to go deep fringe to compete with. Getting deep into Scientology, maybe.
