It's just gotten so bad and he's gotten so out of touch with reality, even past the obvious lies and coping he does. I don't even know anymore, that last little bit of humanity might be suffocated under all those layers of delusions.

Spoiler: Dumb Videogame Analogy

It's been years and I never actually played a whole lot of it, but I've been thinking a lot about Darkest Dungeon.
In that game, when a character reaches 100+ stress, they either succumb and gain and Affliction or push through and gain a Virtue. I feel like we're getting to that point with Phil and I want to know what will happen when he hits 100 stress - will the delusions win or will reality finally cause him to crash? What happens after that?

I don't think Phil is very good at lying but I do however think he is dumb enough to believe his own lies. We'll see what happens.

One of the eternal mysteries of Phil is how much he believes his own bullshit. He's delusional, but if his ego was truly impenetrable then he probably wouldn't have become increasingly unhinged over the years. But it's safe to say that even if there is a voice inside of Phil that tells him that the detractors are right, it's not a very loud voice.

Another possibility is that he is genuinely that oblivious and the reason for his mental decline is because he's constantly stressed out because the world refuses to acknowledge how great he is.

One of the eternal mysteries of Phil is how much he believes his own bullshit. Anyone with eyes can see it's not true but I think he believes it on some level, hence "detractors are jealous d00d!". It's quite a mystery though. He definitely does think he's hot shit, while deep-down being the most insecure man on the planet, that's classic narc paradox.

I liked this analogy a lot. Not played the game, but I couldn't post on your profile to say that since it's mostly offtopic, so I guess here's my attempt to make it ontopic. DSP has eternal ego compression ability imo. He can make it as small and dense as needs be (internet laughingstock bullied underdog), and makes it as big and all encompassing as he wants it to be (he coulda saved da internet from scammers, he was a big dog on YT and FGC, he could be the best gamer, he is rich af, he's on his 23rd resurgence, and all game devs should listen to him). One of his few strengths is that to protect his ego at all times he has to be able to rapidly modulate his ego size on demand even mid-sentence in order to say what he wants and portray himself in the way he wants, while taking zero damage.

That's not to say it's effective at convincing people. Most of his lies are self-evident immediately. He's a retard with a hundred tells, and would be the world's worst poker player. I mean even watching tonight's gameplay, he's awful and has no idea why anything happens because he's expanding and contracting his ego nonstop so he's never at blame for playing poorly. Therefore he cannot know why and thus he can never improve.

I would normally agree with you, but they've not exactly gone his way for some time now. I would lump the KingSnakening and RTU Feltening in with these and he just...makes himself look so stupid. It's not that impressive, it's the standard MO of every covert narcissist. Every story they tell about themselves somehow has a massive victim component in it, so you end up getting whiplash when they somehow end up being both the poor blameless victim and a powerful conquering hero in the same story. Sometimes the shift from victim to hero is between sentences.

If I can give my psychological evaluation as someone who spends too much time here...
--If you listen to how he talks about himself, his incredible insecurity when what's left of his hair is out of place, the way he freaks when people make fun of his moobs, the flexing when he did curls for a week (notice that already stopped)---he knows he's ugly inside and out. He knows he looks 58 at 43. He's just coping.

--I think the "happiness" thing is a half-lie because he's so fucking weird. Phil would be "happy" drinking, DoorDashing, and never leaving Renton (even if none of us would), so he actually is sort of "happy" even though he never takes a vacation, never does anything fun, never experiences the world. The thing from a few days ago where he said he can never take a vacation because his cat would be traumatized---he doesn't WANT to ever leave his house, so he's truly fine with it. He just doesn't understand how bizarre it sounds to be content as an angry shut-in who is terminally online.

Not only that he thinks he was popular once. He never was. He was just the only stop to get any gamepaly back in the day. then came others with better tech und actually being entertaining. Because even back then people shat on him in the comments (as Joon showed) Heck, TIHYDP wasn't even the first "detractor series". If you look for it the series "DSP is a scrub" is still up. Only Streetfighter but it just shows how bad he is or how disrespectful he is.

Though I think he knows it deep, deeeeep in his mind. that's why he drinks gin all the time to drown his nagging doubts
