I distinctly remember the creators of South Park talking about how Family Guy sucked because of referential humor. The last episode of South Park I saw had Cartman fighting with some fraternity and he just randomly calls in Syrian refugee children, Jared from Subway and Pregnant Mexican women to flood into the fraternity house. It was a rapid fire of three distinctly of the time topics that had popped up in the news cycle in the 2010's and with no rhyme or reason they were shoe-horned into the scene.

The creators gave up ages ago and only continued the show to fuel their coke habit.
 
That Network Executive character was 100% meant to be Charlie Kirk before they changed up the episode. The character model even still looks like him.

To back this up, Matt Stone and Trey Parker pretty much said in interview and the DVD commentary for the Chef molestation episode that Issac Hayes was fine making fun of every other religion, including the Catholic Church priests molesting children, until it was Scientology.

"In 10 years and over 150 episodes of South Park, Isaac never had a problem with the show making fun of Christians, Muslims, Mormons or Jews," Stone said in a statement issued late Monday by the Comedy Central TV network.

Hayes was briefly interviewed about it by the AV Club

AVC: They did just do an episode that made fun of your religion, Scientology. Did that bother you?

IH: Well, I talked to Matt and Trey about that. They didn't let me know until it was done. I said, "Guys, you have it all wrong. We're not like that. I know that's your thing, but get your information correct, because somebody might believe that shit, you know?" But I understand what they're doing. I told them to take a couple of Scientology courses, and understand what we do. [Laughs.]

This interview was done prior to the January 2006 stroke.

Hayes was asked to be let out of his contract in a statement released on March 13, 2006.

In 2016 Matt Stone and Trey Parker claimed that Issac Hayes asked them to pull the Scientology episode.

‘When we did the Scientology episode, [Hayes] came over, and I sat with him,’ Stone told the publication.

‘It was like a day or two after, and it was pretty obvious from the conversation that somebody had sent him to ask us to pull the episode.

‘It had already gone on the air, and we didn’t tell him because we didn’t want him to be held accountable. Plausible deniability.’

They bashed him at the time when was still alive for quitting, made his character look like a child molester, and then years after the fact try to pull this "poor guy wasn't accountable for his own actions and his cult made him do it."

This is why I don't buy into he was forced to do it. Everyone around at the time he quit was pissed at each other. Issac Hayes dies and then it is trying to make him as the victim so his legacy and the show's legacy isn't tarnished. His son has an interest in making sure his father is remember in the best way possible because he own his estate.

'The only thing to back up he really didn't want to do it and Stone and Parker believed it was in that episode they show Chef as brainwashed. Of course the cynic in me sees it as they don't want to get sued and make the situation worse and they also don't want a beloved character of the show to turn pure evil.

They were consistent in portraying him as a victim. The scientology episode was season 9 and the final chef episode was season 10, a full 2 years before his death. Said episode depicted him as having been brainwashed by a cult and ultimately did not lay the blame on him.

I covered this. I think the reasons they did so was as follows:

1. Church of Scientology at time was extremely litigious, they were risking getting lawyers involved if they completely bashed him.
2. Chef was an original character and it was within their best interests (merchandising) to not turn the entire fan base against him by making him as a witting child molester.
3. All that had to work with in voice lines was archival bits of audio Issac Hayes as Chef. Splicing them together to make him sound coherent was not going to work in their timeline to produce an episode so it would be easier to write it as he was brainwashed hence his odd manner of speech. I even think in the DVD commentary they entertained the idea of getting another actor just for that episode but decided against it.

I recommend digging up the DVD commentary for that episode. As much as I loathe to quote Wikipedia, this quote is paraphrasing the DVD commentary.

They thought that Hayes and the show had parted ways on good terms, and were somewhat angered by the release, calling it "ridiculous". Before that press release, however, Parker and Stone had been working on what would turn out to be "Cartoon Wars Part I" and "Cartoon Wars Part II", with the intent to open the season with those episodes. They ran into difficulties with the network and postponed those episodes until later in the season. Parker and Stone felt that if the statement by Hayes was never released, they would not have produced more episodes involving Scientology.

They were pissed as Isaac Hayes. They made it clear in the DVD commentary. They were also frustrated because they thought Tom Cruise was trying to pressure Viacom/Paramount to pull the Scientology episode.

Series creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker issued a statement suggesting the Church of Scientology was behind the program's shelving. Sources close to the show said the rerun was canceled after Cruise threatened to boycott promotion of his upcoming film, Mission: Impossible III, for sister studio Paramount Pictures. A spokesman for Cruise denied that charge.

Unfortunately my memory wasn't great after 17 years but here are the key parts from the season 10 video. Season 9 isn't worth listening to because as I actually remembered they didn't even want to talk about the episode for the season DVD set (a criticism of mine for the DVD commentaries was they were never interested in doing them and they were too short).

At 2:35 Trey Parker says "we don't think it {the press release] was written by Isaac but game on." That's interesting but doesn't 100% line up with what they will later say in 2016.

At 3:08 Matt Stone says "Our basic attitude on the whole thing was in the end of the show was when the boys say 'we don't blame Chef for all this stuff we blame the silly little club that scrambled his brains' and that's basically the way we feel about Isaac and Scientology." Again, doesn't line up exactly with what they said in 2016.

They're aren't treating Isaac like a victim, they're treating him like some retard who joined a cult and wouldn't have had a problem with him if he kept quiet. If the last ten or so years hasn't persuaded you, they are also extremely disingenuous people. So who knows what they actually think.

My point is they portrayed him as at least partially a victim from the get go. They showed him consciously returning to the cult after snapping out of it, but at the end they have their stand in say something along the lines of "we shouldn't blame Chef, we should blame the gay little club that did this to him". So I took that at the time as a relatively sympathetic portrayal, at least by South Park standards.
Unless they totally whitewashed the affair and absolved him of any blame after his death that isn't really much of an about face. I'm not arguing whether or not behind the scenes they wanted to portray him entirely unsympathetically and held back solely for the sake of the brand. I'm also not surprised if that's the case.
 
This might have been asked before but is anyone starting to believe that this whole Trump arc will continue for the next 3 years of him in office? Even if they some how try to avoid making Trump episodes after this season, I can not see Matt and Trey helping themselves in doing more episodes about him in the next couple of seasons, especially if Trump does something big next year or the year after. I don't see how anyone at that point could stand South Park when it has literally become "Trump Park". By that point, I think anyone with a brain would have to realize that there is something wrong with Trey and Matt (if they haven't now) to be this obsessed with a guy that doesn't really affect their lives.

These guys are addicted to outrage content on social media and the news media. They must spend all day and night staring into the abyss of their cell phone screens and doom scrolling for the next Trump or South Park article. As long as they watch the news and see the next "TRUMP DID SOMETHING!" article or social media topic they'll respond to it through South Park. They also want to see their names in the news and social media websites which means turning South Park into a political show every episode.

They are addicted to seeing themselves getting praised on reddit which drives nearly all content on the show now. Just saying "Trump" or "Vance" is worth an entire week of them reading the glowing praise from the astroturfed faggots on their reddit groups. And with the moderation removing all criticism they only see the approved safe space messages.

This is literally what the Daily Show, Real Time, MSNBC, Fox News, Hannity, and any other political talk or news show do every episode. They just hyper focus on stuff that their fans will rage or clap over. And have their engagement farming down to an exact science. South Park is literally just CNN or Newsmax in cartoon form. Same talking points and screaming and low effort just with jokes thrown in more often.

There is an audience for this kind of programming.
 
This season isn't even over yet and "haha Blumpf has smoll orange pp and is gay for Satan!" Has already become tired and stale.

Hard to see how they can stretch this out for another three years but I'm sure they'll try.
 

Got recommended this video. If you been following this thread, there's likely not much you haven't read here or elsewhere criticizing the show. But it's a good summarization of all the issues plaguing the show at the moment.

It was. South Park revived Isaac Hayes' career and legacy. He was practically destitute when they hired him for the show, it was the only reason they could afford him!
