I wonder how much of the show is really written by Trey and Matt at this point. While I do think theyve lost their touch, alot of this just feels like a lame immitation. Given the larger staff and their burnout, it would make sense for them to phone it in and offload the work to the writers room. The show took a huge dip in quality around the serialized seasons and never really recovered. I liked a few of the specials alot (future Cartman being a rabi was great), but overall the actual season have been well below standard. One thing I noticed is that they drag out jokes for way too long now. PC Principal was a good joke for like 1 season, and then they dragged him out as a main character for 10 years. Tegridy farms was fine for 1 season, but it became 50% of the show.
This season has been weak so far and is filled with rehashed jokes. The only episode that was really good was the AI episode. It's like they're out of ideas so they just are dragging out the political commentary without the delivery that made it work in earlier seasons. They had maybe 1 episode of content there, and could've brought back Sadam Trump as a recurring gag like to original Sadam, but its just the next PC principal or tegridy farms that immediately overstays its welcome.

Brave of you to think that they haven't just fed an AI the entire wiki and told it to write the episodes for them. All they ever do is add the obvious drumpf jokes and the machine does the rest, it might as well if the show is going to be this lame and rehashed.

That's the awful thing about ths episode too. 10 years from now, since there's no connection mentioend to Kimmel, younger people will wonder who the fuck Carr is and why is he getting maimed for the lulz out of nowhere. They're literally memoryholing half of the reference becuase they're big pussies who want to have their cake and eat it too with no regard to episodes as self-contained stories.

They don't need to think of jokes anymore. The only discussions about their show that they read are from their reddit group. Which is run by their own people. And since the Charlie Kirk shooting has been under 1984 level moderation. They don't see anyone saying anything other than "this was best episode of all time" or "I just subscribed my ten closest friends to Paramount as a gift".

It's been an issue for many seasons where episode after episode is something to do with the adult characters or politics that lingers across multiples episodes. Everything takes place in the same few places and they're not even that clever with it. They moan about people who hate tegridy farms but they made half the show take place there and nothing interesting even happens there.
Like one episode a season takes place in some random American city but its always a political point and/or the adult characters doing something boring.
Off the top of my head I'm thinking of the Cartmanland, Zipline, Butters fakes his death etc. episodes where something non political but funny "filler" episodes were some of the most memorable from the past seasons.

I feel like if anybody confronted them on this they would just say you're mad at the make fun of you show and therefore are dumb when Matt and Trey have a collective IQ at around 60. They really don't give a shit about anything other than ass pats and obscure references. Next season will just be youtube shorts with their political enemies eating glue while wearing shirts that relate to obscure bullshit. "Drumpf eats glue while wearing a that 70s show shirt? Fucking epic dude". They're so used to being the little emperors of television that they can't even imagine not being THE zeitgeist. Every new episode feels like they want to go back to 2004 and sell dog shit subscription ringtones.

If it doesn't matter then why are there lots of South Park fans making this big deal out of it by saying "First trans/nonbinary character!"? Hell, if this character never comes back then can it be argued that Trey and Matt were just baiting these people by introducing a character whose gender is left ambiguous? I see South Park fans going "This will piss off the Trump supporters" and yet all I see are transgender fans so desperate for rep that they'll take a character who probably wont even appear again as rep. Also, these fans forget that Trey and Matt are anything but subtle, if they really wanted a canon trans character then this character would have straight up said they were.

Haven't watched South Park in years. I'd see clips every so often, but I just didn't care enough to sit through a whole season. I finally watched a few episodes from the latest season and I'm a bit confused. Are the writers intentionally being unfunny as some sort of meta joke or have they truly lost their edge?

Yes, the joke was that they can't have a character named "Token" any more in the modern age, so they retconned his name and made a joke about how obvious the retcon is.

I've never seen a show update its subtitles so quickly. Every caption in every season was instantly retconned to be Tolkien Black, even in episodes where he's still wearing a name tag that says Token. They were thorough for that single change, meanwhile the captions still have typos and homophone errors.

The moment a show can't go an episode without referencing its past should be when it's put out of its misery for good, which has been happening in spades this season. They even sneaked in Cartman saying "Have you heard about my friend Kyle's mom?" from the old song in this new episode.

So basically they caved in but instead of just being open about it or not talking about it at all, they had a melty and called anyone who had a problem with a "giant piece of shit"
Old Matt and Trey would have stuck with it and maybe made a second Token like character on top of that.
Weak and pathetic, but maybe 10 more episodes about orange man will bring their bite back!
