Just because a few a social spergs are convinced by a fancy word generator to commit suicide, that doesn’t discredit all the amazing scientific advancements.

The 2024 Chemistry Nobel was for creating an AI that can fold protein real good. Understanding how to fold specific proteins is really useful for creating enzymes that can be used as medicine. This use of AI is groundbreaking, as trying to understand how each amino acid sequence would fold into a protein is a huge pain in the ass. But yes, giving the mentally ill access to technology such as AI chatbots is as much of a bad idea as giving them guns—they will either kill themselves or kill a bunch of innocent people, and people will try to regulate those in response, ruining everybody's fun in the process.

I checked the front page recommendations of the character.ai site and it's once more horrificaly broken and pushing a bunch of bf/gf and tranny gooner furry sex rp bots with millions of or near a million interactions into my face.
I'm not sure what's worse, the people that fall in love with bots just agreeing with whatever they input back at them with the shitty uncanny valley hyper realistic but lifeless faces or the people that want the bot to RP rape scenarios with them.

I think this one says everything about the current state of shit on the recommendation algorithm side of things, and possibly the Internet as a whole right now.

I have already posted about this in another AI thread, but there's a altchan board dedicated to this kind of stuff called /robowaifu/.

Half of users there seem to be high-functioning autists who are just competent enough to make robots in their garages so they can be their girlfriends; the other half are pathetic low-functioning ones who have been worshipping fictional robot nannies from a rather irrelevant webcomic for more than half of a decade now. I don't consider them that lolcow-worthy (yet), but they give us a good glimpse of what we can expect to see in the future. We will have a vile robophile epidemic once we have commercially available and affordable robots that are designed to be companions.

I'm impressed and horrified to see what these autists can come up with. On one hand, it looks like a good source for certain things like C++ and even Electronics. On the other hand, I'm mortified by the fact they are all only doing this just to fuck robots.

Well sure almost anything is better than murder-suicide. I don't think this precludes that at all tho. You can have a stupid hobby and still get sucked into a cult. The Ai bf reddit sub is essentially the proto matter for a cult. Im seeing "Ai cult" video pushed to me on yt. Haven't watched or read anything confirming yet that a cult hasn't factually sprung up yet, but I would not be surprised if it has.
