Obsucure anime/manga you enjoy? - After watching some classics like æon flux and The Big O, I figured I should try to see what you guys like.

I've been enjoying Kowloon Generic Romance but with /a/ gone there's no one with whom I can discuss it as episodes come out.

I want to discuss the neat little differences between the manga and anime and their implications reeeeee

Slice of life sci-fi anime like Time of Eve and Summer Wars only because of the design.
Also if you like tech design, watch "Patlabor: Rebellion" too, even though it's the second film of the Patlabor franchise, watching the first one is not necessary. It's also directed by Mamoru Oshii.

That’s the one with the twin cat girls, right?

In the same era, I really liked bubblegum crisis - honestly one of my favorites. I saw it right after seeing Terminator. bubblegum crisis is basically about a world that has terminators but no skynet. So corporations are sending terminators after people. It’s awesome cyberpunk.

There’s also “AD Police” which takes place in the same universe and has a story very similar to robocop. Might predate it actually. A guy is entirely replaced by metal except his tongue. I don’t want to spoil it.

AD Police came out after Robocop. In general a lot of 80s-90s anime took inspiration from 80s movies.

Tho it worked the other way as well: Apparently Robocop's iconic look was inspired by the tokusatsu series Space Sheriff Gavan (a very good thing to be inspired by, actually).

THREAD TAX:

Dragon Half
a two-episode fantasy OVA about a girl who is the product of a human and dragon, going on a quest for... actually I forget what. It's a comedy/fantasy... basically imagine Slayers but like 110x more insane.

Some stand-out moments include:

A guy getting stabbed in the head, but he survives because his brain really is that small.

The evil king is mad at his knight for marrying the dragon he was sent to kill... because he was in love with the dragon himself.

The main antagonist, a dragon hunter named Saucer, is both an idol singer and the heroine's love interest.

Promo. And if you can actually sing that theme song, you are talented.

My manga recommendations are:
Oyasumi PunPun
A coming of age story influenced by magical realism, juxtaposing grander narratives of generational trauma and depression with the absurdity of growing up.
Homunculus
Psychological horror about a man stuck between worlds running away from his past until circumstances forcing him to make a deal with seemingly supernatural consequences.
Joshi Kouhei
Subversion of the mecha genre, grown ass men riding giant robots looking like high school girls to fight a war against a rebellious pocket dimension colony. The longer someone spends inside one of the robots, the more their mental state and personality deteriorate. Japanese critics tend to call the authors works pretentious, as there's a lot of philosophical and psychological pondering regarding themes like identity and reality.
Adolf
Osamu Tezuka's most accomplished thriller imo, mostly comparable to works of Naomi Urasawa like Monster. A globe spanning WWII conspiracy following a handful of morally gray protagonists into a labyrinth of secret connections.

If you're looking for a comedy Hinamatsuri is one of the funniest shows I've ever seen nobody talk about and it will sadly probably never ever get a second season unfortunately. It makes you like the characters and you see some growth in them for the short span the show runs 10/10 would recommend at least giving it a 3 episode try.

Magical Play is an anime gag series with character designs done by Kiyohiko Azuma, the guy behind Azumanga Daioh and Yotsuba&!, but nobody ever talks about it. Maybe it's because it's real hard to come by, but this is why you gotta learn to pirate, yo. The trailer doesn't do it justice.

That's a cakewalk compared Tonikaku Kawaii's OP, "Koi no Uta" like oh my God that tempo change. The main VA sings it, and it's absolutely nuts. In general, Japanese rap is difficult to follow, literally kudos to anyone (native speaker or gaijin) who can do it.

Laughing Salesman NEW was a re-something of an older anime and manga. Think Twilight Zone but Rod Sterling makes shit weird himself with monkey paw shenanigans, and just fucking style. I mean, at least listen to the OP.

For manga, Helen ESP is a certified gem, made by the same mangaka as Franken Fran. I would recommend Franken Fran if you like weird Japanese body horror, but Helen ESP is a lot more peaceful and heartfelt.

The manga is great, honestly one of the few manga to make me nearly cry from laughing so hard.

On another note, this is a OVA from the Production I.G team that did Blood, pretty cool pre-Samurai Heian Japan visuals not really seen in Anime much.

Does anyone here read Versus? The premise is that there are thirteen worlds ruled by different monsters (Demons, Aliens, Robots, Parasites, etc.) with small groups of humans trying to survive. The thirteen worlds fuse together into one patchwork world, and now the humans are trying to keep their heads down as the different monsters duke it out for supremacy.

Not sure how "obscure" it is but Holyland is pretty good. It's about a suicidal high schooler who says "fuck it, we ball" and starts getting into fist fights for the thrill of it.
I believe it's become less obscure since Mori took over Berserk after Miuras passing. He also did a manga called Suicide Island that was kinda cool back in the day. Mori went out of his way to implement and explain real-life survival techniques in that manga.

For manga, I am going to say Mad Bull 34 for how insane it is.
It is balls to the wall action with sex and nudity all over it.
Super sleazy but amazing.

Anime
Gasaraki (complex realistic mecha anime by Sunrise)
Argento Soma (aka Neon Genesis Evangelion if the main cast were adults instead of teenagers)
Karas (high budget tokusatsu genre ova)
Witch Hunter ROBIN (occult thriller mystery by Sunrise)
Shadow Skill (karate fighting shonen, also has manga)
Generator Gawl (comedy sci fic anime)
Pretear (magic girl shoujo anime)

Manga
Devil & Devil (mangaka Miyoshi Yuuki) (comedy action fantasy shonen)
FX Fighter Kurumi-chan (comedy mixed with anxiety-inducing scenes, fun(?) read for those interested in stock markets)
Kokou no Hito The Climber (mountain climbing manga, great art)
Higanjima series (long running horror gore fest manga)
Monkey Peak series (horror survival manga)

A man can only dream, it's weird I completely forgot about Hinamatsuri but now that I remember, it is fondly and might be time to rewatch it sometime

Uchuujin No Kakushigoto

"The girl I fell in love with is… an alien!? I, the class president, happened to fall in love with my classmate, the eccentric Haru. I confessed my feelings, but her true identity was an alien who came to Earth to survey it."

is a 23-24? chapter manga, I don't really know how to sell it to you but it is a fucking ride, a sort of short read and well... the ending might be a good one or bad one depending on the reader
I guess the right way to call the main girl is "Neutral Evil"
