Balatro is banned at my house - Feeding my gambling addiction

Requires a potato to play, small download, no serious bugs, high ratings and reviews, no apparent controversy...

Seems like either a Unicorn game or a CCP plot to massively deploy covert spyware.
I’m pretty sure it’s a unicorn, It just dropped out of nowhere during Steam Next Fest and it’s easily GOTY. There are games that people anticipate for decades that turn out to be crappy, and every now and then you get a Balatro that reminds us all why we still care about this hobby in the first place.

Reminder that if you didn't get gold stake before the patch, you didn't beat the game!

Jesus Christ my productivity has taken a nosedive since I got this game lmao

I finally unlocked the erratic deck. First run I end up with 2 throw backs + blue print and my deck had 15 2's. Ended up playing 5 of a kind every match and getting 3 7x mults per hand.

Fuck this game is crack.

I've been worried about spending way too much time playing, but I finally went and tried it out. After the tutorial run and a fail, I ended up in a kind of Constellation/Supernova loop where I kept boosting them by playing planet cards (especially Mercury) and just playing pairs. Something like a 666 multiplier on a pair of random cards and beat the last blind with one pair of threes. Endless Mode kicked my ass a couple antes later, but it was great.

Can't believe somebody combined the addiction of gambling and trading card packs and roguelite progression. What a maniac. It's pretty fun.

Game lives up to it's reputation, this game is like crack. It lives up to the hype, AND its inexpensive. From a development and modding standpoint, I think it's the most popular LÖVE framework game ever? There is already a mod community too. I've only recently got into roguelikes (RoR2 gang), and I've never really enjoyed deckbuilders until now. I'm gonna pick up slay the spire now that its on sale.

It's coming to phones too. If there was ever a justified mobile game it's Balatro.

The faggots in the /v/ thread didn't acknowledge my OC so you guys get it instead

Fun game but I've been frustrated lately since I've had some promising decks fizzle out in mid-game for lack of scaling jokers and x-multi (playing at Purple Stake and higher). I'm getting the same feeling that I got with Slay The Spire which is that you're at the mercy of RNG to not cuck you out of the essential ingredients to scale at higher difficulties. Supposedly Cavendish is a common joker but I've only got it once (yes I know you need to have Gros Michel destroy itself to get it), I swear one game I rerolled 15 times and still never got it.

Ever since I bought this game i've been unable to stop playing it. I've only had it for a couple of weeks and its already in my top 5 most played games on steam. I think it's game of the year.

I was gifted this game and I put a dozen hours in it with the first couple days. I need to commit to trying to win more than just 1 run. I've had plenty of runs get far, but sometimes it seems like all it takes is a bad boss matchup to completely tank your run. I do like it as a time killer if I need something to do for 15-20 minutes. I like the art, sounds, and presentation, I just had to turn off that shaky effect I found it annoying. You got any tips on how to win, or some OP Jokers to look out for?

1. Establish base mult early. Don't skip if you don't need to, seeing a shop and getting round money is much better than almost all the skip tags.
2. Build econ. Try to get to the interest cap asap (while keeping in mind scoring requirements). Don't take more than you need unless its an extremely good joker.
3. Have a gameplan and build your deck around it. Deck manipulation lets you draw the cards you want which lets you win.
4. Focus on xMult mid-late game. I try to usually go for one good econ joker, one good chip joker (or utility joker if planets are scaled), one good base mult, and two good xMult jokers.
5. Don't rush too much, take the time to make sure you aren't making braindead plays. It's very easy to do something completely retarded and then kick yourself for it immediately after. Like playing 4 cards accidentally on the 5 cards only boss.

For OP jokers i'd look for anything that has scaling xMult. Vampire, campfire, steel, etc. xMult on scoring jokers is great too if you can build your deck around them like bloodstone and idol.
Deck manipulation jokers are amazing too. Trading card and DNA are amazing jokers especially early game. Look through the joker list and find ones you haven't unlocked, there are lots of good ones locked by default.

Sometimes even with a perfect run you'll get hard countered by a boss and there's pretty much nothing you can do. In the end it's a gambling game and sometimes you lose from bad luck.
I'd watch some Balatro University on youtube, nigga is an autistic wizard at the game.

One thing I learnt very quickly is to watch what jokers you get in first 2 runs and then build around them. Don't try and 'force' a deck.

If you are really struggling, just rush to the 2 suit deck by winning first round on the other decks.

Best run I have had is the 'discard increases level of discarded hand' with the 2 suit deck. Got my flushes up to ~25 and it almost didn't matter what other jokers I had.

I can't in good conscience recommend Balatro to anybody because it is just way too random for there to be meaningful skill expression.
As in, there are many runs that, due to the extent of randomness, are doomed to fail regardless of how skilled or resourceful the player is.
I don't like the kind of game where you might as well just reset or restart within the first minutes.

Welcome to Roguelites as a genre.

Welcome to Roguelites as a genre.
In my experience, the majority of Roguelites don't have this problem.
Sure, there might be RNG-caused situations that are grueling, tedious, and leave little room for error, but they can be beaten with sufficient patience, skill, and consistency.
In Balatro, that's not the case, and situations become completely unwinnable through no fault of the player and with no chance of clutching victory from the jaws of defeat.
