Feet are more granular and easier to describe small differences in height. Nobody immediately appreciates the difference between 1.75 and 1.85 meters, nobody likes describing height in centimeters, and even the most pozzed Metric System countries don't use decimeters.

It's the same problem of Fahrenheit over Celsius. Celsius is great for chemistry, but it sucks ass at describing the weather.

Exactly, a yard is 0.9 meters. The problem is that for longer distances it messes up your understanding of things. Let's go with 850 yards that is 777 meters. Someone tells me something is 850 yards away, I have to make a quick calculation and I'll end up thinking maybe 800 meters and it's wrong by 20. Unless you are very used to yards and converting them, it just complicates things

Hands is pretty standard for horses in the English speaking world.

Feet and inches are great for measuring real world things you need to visualize easily. I can easily approximate an inch or half an inch, or a foot or half a foot just by looking.

Centimeters are too small and meters are too big. When you work with feet and inches the numbers stay manageable and it's a lot easier working with fractions in your head instead of decimals.

Metric is better for when you have a bunch of abstract measurements and you need to do some kind of calculations with them.
