I find the laugh tracks annoying too and have to re-adjust everytime I re-watch one of the classic series. Even then there are plenty of unfunny jokes that get an unwarranted audience laughs which can be grating. When every single joke is unfunny it gets on another level but I don't watch shitty shows so whatever.I grew up in the '80s and laugh tracks were a part of every sitcom, so I never really noticed. Whenever the single camera format like "the office" showed up and didn't have a laugh track is what ruined most accounts for me. I was a die hard Seinfeld fan during its original run and was excited when Netflix added the entire series. Soon as I started watching it, the laugh track I had never noticed before was painfully obvious and annoyed the crap out of me. I watched a YouTube videos of sitcoms being filmed with the awkward pauses between punchlines sans laugh track. It finally occurred to me that most of the writing in sitcoms is terrible and unfunny.
I forgot John Oliver's show has a laugh track. That show is ridiculous, but I suspect this is a popular view within KF so I'm being off topic.Laugh tracks are a relic of a bygone era, when comedy was supposed to be entertaining as opposed to Two Minutes' Hate with snarky delivery. Lucy and Ethel getting up to some retarded shit has a laugh cue because, well, it's funny. "White people are just the worst, amirite?" [Canned laughter and applause] doesn't entertain, it just makes you think of the John Oliver copypasta.
