Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

I think you're just nitpicking what counts as DLC. If it's clearly extra content, everyone's okay with that.
Actually I'm not. There are people out there that will screech like retards because a developer releases a DLC and didn't put it in the game at launch. Even if it's legitimate post release content they will still have an autistic bitch fit.
The problem is how DLC ended up being used in many cases. It pretty much killed off those silly unlockables games used to have. That's not DLC's fault, though. That's the fault of publishers and developers.
It's not the DLC concept it's the developers and publishers abusing DLC to do shady shit. But the good thing about DLC just like with the expansions is most of time it's optional.
Video games are shit. People who play video games are shit.

We're all essentially shit consuming shit complaining that the shit we're eating tastes like shit while we eat more shit, or regurgitate older shit to consume the shit again because "the old shit was better than this steaming new shit".
Ok Boomer.

There are games that smaller and have less demanding system requirements. They are called indie games. At least most of them do. I don't think AAA or even AA will go back to making less demanding games. People expect a certain level of graphical eye candy in new games. It's why they bought that new expensive console or that new expensive PC hardware. Games have always gotten better graphically. It didn't ruin games back in the 90's. The switch over from 2D to 3D didn't ruin video games. If anything it made them more popular and better. Though those early 3D games can be pretty ugly.

I bought Boltgun the day it was released. I like Duke3D and Blood. Though I have more experience with Duke3D. I played a little of Boltgun and I enjoyed it. Though I tend to like retro throwback shooters as well. I have a bunch of them on Steam as well as classics like Quake and Doom. You can play old games as much as you want. You don't ever have to play anything new. No one is forcing you to play newer games. I have emulators and play SNES and Genesis games once in a while. But I don't want to spend my time sitting around playing Doom all day like some kind of autismo.

The problem with this argument is yes people like me who whine about technology being shit will get outmoded with time but considering console transitions, the improvements between console generations gameplay wise, graphically and experiences as a whole are getting infinitesimally small. My preferences in video games might be subjective but you cant deny that games have gotten poorer in quality with each console generation on average, especially considering the graphical quality is also not improving. We've hit that bottleneck, with the PS5 and beyond what a lot of people will discover is that theyre being lied to and that consoles virtually have nothing more to improve on as time goes on while devs have been making really shit games and justifying doing so through graphical fidelity, resource consumption, cost whatever. Theres also the point of "getting less for more" as time goes on, I have said this before if I can get 100 well crafted fun PS1 and SNES games for 100GB which run well with great polish and great experiences over a 200 hour epic open world game with the highest graphical fidelity DLCs and roadmaps galore which is 100GB, why would I take the latter, what am I gaining by taking the latter. Same thing applies for graphics, console generation, game mechanic quality, spec requirements whatever point being if I can play better games in higher quantity for lesser specs why am I going to take the new stuff? Because its new? Thats a shit argument but it probably will be posed by the average modern gamer cause people always have the mindset of "new equals better". You can walk away from this thinking Im an oldfag boomer who is stuck in the past but Im posing the question if the stuff from the past was better and demands less from you why should you justify your investment in anything new. Not that you shouldnt like new games but why would you do so. Im not even saying reverse all progress new stuff is always going to get a section of the market, indie games are pretty shit cause theyre full of recycled gameplay or repetitive art or whatever but it would be nice if people developed proper for old consoles, people developed for old pc specs with outdated engines like gamebryo or whatever. Even the Open Sourcers are doing a ton of great work with the likes of OpenRA, OpenTTD, OpenRCT2, KeeperFx, FreeCiv, Battle For Wesnoth, OpenGeneral stuff like that.

"Let's support the AI that has sided with the Reapers two times now and has completely abandoned their stated goals because for some reason I have feels for power tools. I'm so smart." --- retard liberal Paragon Shepard.

I'd kill myself too if I followed this man. It's the most moronic choice in the entire series and is basically there for metagaming faggots, which is the core demo that Bioware pursues now.

Whatever. Fuck off glownigger retard. Politisperging? really? At least the toasters wont politisperg constantly. They were driven to do what they did by victim blaming retards like you. Just like in every other "robot slave race revolts" story. God forbid they ever protect themselves from being attacked and killed unprovoked.

Let's never look at what CAUSED the problem to happen in the first place, just that the problem happened and we have to preserve muh status quo at all times.

Yeah, you're definitely the kind of tranny fucking, BLM loving faggot that Bioware loves now. You don't even do it for metagame, you do it for your feels. *points and laughs*

Speaking of Bioware, I never did like them. My introduction to their games was Star Wars: KOTOR, which I dropped after about a couple of hours because I was promised an RPG, and didn't get what I thought of as an RPG at the time, that being the likes of Final Fantasy. The whole system with having to pause the battle and input commands really put me off.

Later on, Mass Effect dropped, so I picked it up when it was $20 after hearing about how great it was, and ended up dropping it before I even reached the end of the first area. Didn't even make it to the first achievement. That game just felt like torture to play. I almost never used to resell my games, but I resold that one quickly.

Next was Dragon Age: Origins, another Bioware RPG but in a high fantasy setting, and I never, ever get along well with high fantasy. I still ended up with a free copy, somehow, I think from a Humble Bundle. I'm sure I would loathe it.

Then came negative reviews about Sonic Chronicles. Then the Mass Effect 3 scandal. Then they got sacked with Anthem. Then Mass Effect: Andromeda. And then a whole lot of internet people waxing poetically about the downfall of the company, as I sit in the background quietly going:

Okay here's a real one off the top of my head that isn't just shitposting:

The Doom games are some of the finest examples of the most overrated games of all time, and this is coming from someone who loves Doom. What Doom does right is having an excellent sandbox to build off of, and it's why we have a fucking ocean of modified content out there in the ether to be freely consumed. What Doom does wrong is literally almost everything in the base, vanilla experience.

I guarantee you hardly anybody would think Doom is the amazing game that it is if it wasn't so easily modifiable for people to make their own stuff with its toolkit. Doom in the right hands is a religious experience of game design. Doom in the wrong hands, which just so happens to be the original creators' hands, is a terrible-at-worst to mediocre-at-best experience.

I don't mind how full of anime cliches and tropes the Cold Steel games are. That's part of the charm for me. Prefer the Sky arc, but that wasn't any less tropey. It just came from a different era of anime.

For example, everything about Joshua. He's an orphan that got picked up by evil people to be brainwashed and turned into an assassin who develops memory loss because of those same people. Once he regains his memories, he runs around being emo and looking for revenge. Then his adoptive sister hugs the emo out of him after giving a friendship speech or something. Totally not a cliche to be found here.

Vanilla doom is a product from another time. You gotta realise the original doom came out in a time when people were still playing with the Nes and Gameboy.

Yeah I don't like bioware too, I don't like story intensive games which force me to read and watch cutscenes, just give me a book at that point. I think that's one of the things dark souls does well, makes all the story and lore optional and you're encouraged to read them by virtue of world and enemy design being so good instead of being a bioware or naughty dog game trying to shove the story in your face.

I consider the PS2 era to be the best era for game developers where graphics were good enough to have a $40 price tag, which allowed for some experimentation. I do have a fondness for the PS3/360 era since that was the beginning of HD games, even though it does lead to the AAA malaise we have now.

Same, PS2 GameCube Wii was the best generation cause there was the perfect balance of graphics and gameplay, it was just far enough from the past to have some solid gameplay concepts and just far backwards from the present to still allow innovation/experimentation in gameplay mechanics. I personally like the SNES and ps1 generations more cause I feel they had more experimental gameplay especially the ps1 but PS2 was the perfect balance for both mainstream and niche audiences. It also had the most iconic library of games where even games which were mediocre at the time like madworld, god hand and viewtiful joe have achieved pinnacle status retroactively, which sorta means that they were already great at the time and we didn't realise it.

This console generation is not bad, many of the games have been dun but this generation has been boring.
You mean the PC generation? Because the reason why games today are massive is because they are meant to be played on high graphical settings at 60 FPS. Consoles are in this weird position where they have to have a budget price point while also proving an okay experience in 4K at 60 FPS. Games themselves have bifurcated between those who have potato PCs and $4000 gaming rigs.

man I just did not give a fuck about Silent Hill 4 despite really liking 1-3. I don't even know why. I never have. I've had plenty of opportunities to buy it, play it, pirate it, whatever, but I just never had the urge to. Apparently it's one of the good ones, too. Oh well

The capacity for networked play and the fact that id more or less freely put out the mod tools for the game are what elevated it, I think. Also something to be said for the fact that most computers could feasibly run it as is.

That, and I think it helps a lot more that genuinely the best part of OG Doom IS Episode 1, which was shareware.

I would say level design and 3d level geometry, all the raycasting wolfenstein shit but with verticality. Also the gore/environmental textures, orthogonal enemy design and weapon powerlevels, wolfenstein 3d had 5 enemies among which 3 are practically the same and 4 weapons among which 2 are useless but doom practically invented orthogonal enemy design and weapon power levels in pc games. Its a funny thing though, most best episodes of retro shooters are usually the shareware episodes, it was rare to see a retro shooter with best non shareware episodes like Quake, Duke3d or Blood. Shadow Warrior is the worst example of this, the first episode is the only good episode and it gets progressively worse from there.

The normal movie tie in games were hit or miss for me, alien vs predator was pretty meh, avatar was pretty meh, king kong was pretty good
Weirdly the 6th gen saw lots of movie tie in games from ips like godfather and scarface ( the godfather game is esp kino though i wouldve recommended the ps3 dons edition if it werent for the fact its one of the few rare ps3 titles out there ).

I really like the animation ones particularly cause I grew up with them as a kid and despite being marketed to children theyre actually really good games, something a 10 year old would play. Activision Dreamworks ones especially were really top tier games, developed by Beenox or Toys for Bob usually. The disney ones from the n64 ps1 were second best and everything else was eh, ranged from really good like the Ice Age games to meh like Sinbad.
