Disaster Apple employees criticize work-from-home policy in open letter - Employees say two day WFH policy would lead to a "younger, whiter, more male-dominated, more neuro-normative, more able-bodied" workforce

A group of Apple employees have written an open letter to the company's executive team complaining about its new policy that only allows for two days of working from home, iMore has reported. They said that Apple's reasons for implementing the policy don't stand up, and that the policy is wasteful, inflexible and will lead to a "younger, whiter, more male-dominated, more neuro-normative, more able-bodied" workforce.

"You have characterized the decision for the Hybrid Working Pilot as being about combining the "need to commune in-person" and the value of flexible work," the letter states. "But in reality, it does not recognize flexible work and is only driven by fear. Fear of the future of work, fear of worker autonomy, fear of losing control."

We tell all of our customers how great our products are for remote work, yet, we ourselves, cannot use them to work remotely? How can we expect our customers to take that seriously? How can we understand what problems of remote work need solving in our products if we don't live it?

In March, Apple announced that corporate employees would be returning to the office, and need to be there two days a week at minimum by May 2nd. Starting May 23rd, it'll shift to a hybrid model with mandatory office days on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. CEO Tim Cook called in-person collaboration benefits "irreplaceable" and in an email, the executive team talked about the importance of "the serendipity that comes from bumping into colleagues" during in-person work.

However, the letter counters those arguments saying that in-person collaboration is not even needed monthly in some cases. It also disputed the "serendipity" statement, saying that Apple's siloed office structure makes it difficult to bump into colleagues, adding that remote tools like Slack are better for collaboration. Furthermore, Apple's open-plan offices limit the concentration "required for creativity and... deep thought," they said.

It noted that a daily commute "is a huge waste of time as well as both mental and physical resources." At the same time, it said that the policy favors people who can afford to live near the office and don't have to perform care-work. "In short, it will lead to privileges deciding who can work for Apple, not who’d be the best fit."

Perhaps the most compelling argument was that Apple was being hypocritical in the way it markets its own products. "We tell all of our customers how great our products are for remote work, yet, we ourselves, cannot use them to work remotely?" the letter states. "How can we expect our customers to take that seriously? How can we understand what problems of remote work need solving in our products if we don't live it?"

The letter is another sign of growing employee discontent at Apple, which often presents itself as progressive and inclusive in its ads. Employees recently started organizing a push for "real change" at the company, citing "a pattern of isolation, degradation and gaslighting," and even created an #AppleToo movement. The company is also facing a probe by the US National Labor Relations Board, which is looking into complaints over hostile working conditions.

Almost did a spit take at that headline, but like...

Younger workers are better for companies. They generally get paid less because they have less experience and are more willing to go "above and beyond" because of that youthful energy and naïveté.

Whiter.... how the fuck does reducing the time you can work from home make the workforce whiter? Racist morons.

Tech is predominantly male-oriented from what I hear. Men also have fewer obligations or hassles in general compared to women.

Why the fuck would companies want crazies working for them? "Neuro-normativity" (fuck that phrase is gay) should be the ideal and the norm, with the occasional exceptional individual to make the normies feel inferior and work harder.

And why would a company want cripples working for them? That's just extra shit to deal with.

Stop being lazy faggots and get back to work.

"the policy is wasteful, inflexible and will lead to a "younger, whiter, more male-dominated, more neuro-normative, more able-bodied" workforce."

So their argument against it is that it would lead to a far more productive, btter behaved, and less troublesome workforce on every level.

Way to sell it guys!

This is why Apple sucks now. If Apple developed a "younger, whiter, more male-dominated, more neuro-normative, more able-bodied" workforce that would be a straight upgrade and then maybe they could return to something resembling when Jobs was in charge and they actually had innovative new products and not commercials full of BIPOC trans Muslim freaks. Seriously, check out their ads and keynotes now. You'd think that Apple exclusively makes products for black and disabled people. I hate them and I want to stop using their garbage products but I'm pretty sure Android is even worse.

Pick a lane.
It makes it easier to understand if you remember that sketch about how to not get in trouble for sexual harassment in the workplace and the answer is how much the woman wants you instead of how creepy you're acting.

Except this is Apple so hotness is relative.

Imagine the smell.
Actually probably not relevant here, it's California. If they aren't on fire, then they're sniffing their own farts. If they aren't sniffing their own farts, then there's so many street shitters that the pajeets are suing eachother over caste discrimination. It wouldn't smell nice even if they got rid of the autists.

Fuck, I miss Steve Jobs. And I have too much muscle memory to switch over to Android at this point, even if it is way more open.

Anyone you can't see is white by default.

CNN analyst accuses black radio host of ‘white privilege’
“How do I have the privilege of white privilege?” Webb asked.

“David, by virtue of being a white male, you have white privilege. This whole long conversation, I don’t have time to get into — ”

That’s when Webb interrupted: “Areva, I hate to break it to you, but you should’ve been better prepped,” he said. “I’m black.”
As I've sperged before, this same logic is used by the alphabet soup to erase asexuals.

ITT: people without the option of work from home barely concealing jealousy and resentment.
Yep. The woke stuff is bullshit. But making people come in to some office to do tasks they did perfectly well at home for the last 2 years is worse bullshit. The reason corporations do this isn't anything to do with it being a better way to get things done. It's because they want to force a cult-like "work family" environment and siphon away as much of your life force and will to live as possible.

Fuck going back to a cube. Did these idiots forget how good they have it at home? I went WfH late last year and while I'm pretty sure it's a more local form of outsourcing labor, I'd never go back to the commute life.

Yeah, they can monitor my desktop, but they don't have eyes on anything around it...unlike in an office, where you have someone watching and controlling you the entire time you're there.

Okay, let's dismantle these piece by piece.

Younger. Ask any honest HR pro and they'll tell you "Young women get pregnant and old men get heart-attacks." But in today's climate, young women aren't having children, and younger people will be easier to motivate to do better and climb that ladder as opposed to older workers who've gotten comfortable where they are; new kids also bring new ideas, the diversity is a strength type thing... If you honestly believe it.

Whiter. I'll point to the Smithsonian exhibit about white people and their motivation, pulling up by boot-straps, time management, and all around safer and more productive lifestyle.

Male. Men take less time off in general and are willing to put more time in to distinguish themselves to climb that ladder. The kind of people a company should want, instead of workers who call in because they needed a "Me Day" as I've heard them call it.

Neuro-Normative. Unless you have Richard "Foot Eater" Stallman type autists working for you; you want mostly well-adjusted people working for you, otherwise your workplace becomes a fucking circus. There are places for the super autists, but that's in a room with no windows and little foot traffic, where they can program and formulate in peace.

Able-bodied. The disability act (forgot the exact name) requires a lot of shit for companies to adhere to. But anything that's not federally mandated comes at a cost and requires strict effort to slot people in the right locations. You can't have wheel-chair bound people in positions that require lots of movement or muscle, you can't have hearing impaired taking calls (you can, but voice to text phones are expensive), you legally cannot have color-blind people chasing wires and doing other shit like that. There's nothing wrong with hiring impaired for the right job, but one benefit of having a low amount of them, is you can deputize someone to help another if needed. You may not be able to do that with people who have handicaps.

Cope, seethe, and quit, fucking retards.

I have an external powered mouse mover I use to keep me from logging off/being marked as away so I can spend 6 hours playing Vidya after knocking out the 2 hours of actual work my white collar job needs first thing in the morning. Other than meetings I'm fucking off most of the time....

And it's fucking great.

All of those things are net positives.
Maybe they're tired of working with Ed from Cowboy Bebop and their overweight transexual Eskimo life partner.

Remeber all 5 of the things you posted are Racist, Sexist, and Bigoted by the Stunning and Brave Apple Drones.

This is the most bizarre performative way to try to avoid rush hour traffic in the Bay Area I've ever seen. :story:

That said, I don't disagree in the general sense that if you were able to remote work effectively during the pandemic, you can remote work now, and the real talk is that most programmer types barely need to be in the office at all anymore as long as their managers are being vigilant about work getting done. I'd say it's probably a good idea to have 1 day in the office, there are certainly things which are not best done over zoom or git, but more than that is super circumstantial, at least for programmers and their ilk.

I think Apple blanket requiring 3 days in the office is just them trying to justify that huge flying saucer they built which has been largely wasted property taxes for over 2 years now which they spent many millions on lawyers, architects, engineers, and environmental consultants to make happen.

Most of Apple's workforce who actually do meaningful work fit in that category. Those who do work and don't fit the category are Indians or autists, and you know wokes don't care about them.

While I don't disagree about corps sucking our life force dry, I've heard in quite a few places that work from home in tech has largely been a disaster. Rumor is, a lot of the big, established tech companies are coasting on the fumes of work done before March 2020. The diversity hires do nothing but screech; the real devs are completely demoralized.

I'm still in school for compsci, and not yet in the workforce, but I've been trying, and failing, to get our senior year project finished, and it's impossible to coordinate real work over Zoom. I can see why WFH is so difficult for real jobs like this (email jobs are worthless anyway) since it's hard to hold people accountable if you never see them in person.

That's 100% it. They just built their big stupid and insanely expensive headquarters so they're not going to waste it by letting everyone stay home.

People like to shit on Elon Musk for wasting money when he could "totally" "solve world hunger bro" but what about the almost THREE TRILLION dollar company wasting many billions on new office space.

Depending on what the job entails, work from home can be a sound decision or a rough one. I know some people who do Tier 1 tech support at home; company sends hardware and they are monitored. It's okay for that job, but in my tech job where I have to get hands on, I have to go in, because I can't pull cables from my bedroom. But it also depends on what sort of work ethic/motivation people have; and part of that is being familiar with your team. Not gonna make assumptions, but being you're still in school, your team isn't familiar with each other and all have different ideas, methods, etc on work, especially if you're not in an environment where you can be monitored.
