🐱 Here's What to Expect From the Firefly Reboot From Disney+ - Wheadon fans on suicide watch for one

CatParty

Firefly was canceled too soon. Released in 2002, the series took place in the year 2517. Classified as a space Western drama, the series saw the ensemble cast (lead by Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, and Alan Tudyk) travelling on the spaceship Serenity in search of new adventures.

It was an undoubtedly popular series, garnering up to 4.7 million viewers per episode. Astonishingly, however, Firefly was canceled before it finished its first season. Only eleven of the fourteen planned episodes were released, leaving the dedicated fans of the show devastated. Petitions, fundraisers, and online forums were created in attempts to save the show from being canceled forever, but these efforts were ultimately in vain.

However, Disney plans to reboot the series as an exclusive for its streaming platform Disney+. Disney had acquired the rights to the franchise after their 2018 acquisition of Fox. Firefly seems like the perfect option to diversify their current line-up for streaming. Here’s what to expect from the reboot.

The Rebooted Firefly Will Have a New Story

The original Firefly series on Fox was intended for mature audiences. Inara, for example, is explicitly known to be a courtesan on the show. There are also political, social, and economic factors that interrogate the morals and ethics of the characters' world and society. Disney has not confirmed anything about the plot, but there is speculation on how the story will differ. Some routes include picking up right where the series left off and delving into the past of the Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) who fought in the civil war against the Alliance. However, it is most likely that Disney will restart the entire series on a more family-friendly note. While Disney achieved a new "first" in Eternals by featuring the first openly gay character and first real sex scene, it’s unlikely that Firefly will do the same. Instead, they might opt for a narrative that would appeal to a more general audience on its streaming platform.

Joss Whedon Will Not Be Involved

Since Firefly was his vision and dream, many wondered whether or not Joss Whedon would return for the reboot. While Whedon isn't a stranger to creating television properties--Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a much beloved series to this day--it seems that the allegations of workplace harassment against him might be the reason he won't be returning. Indeed, WarnerMedia conducted an investigation,, resulting in swift action from the studio. Whedon then exited the HBO Max series The Nevers, and it’s safe to assume that producers, especially Disney, are cautious about working with him. He has not directed any television shows or movies since leaving The Nevers.

More Details Are Coming

Disney has largely kept quiet about the Fireflyreboot, but they are planning to create the series. Because of the lack of official information, a release date, cast, and specific details haven't been confirmed. There are several different routes that Disney could spin the plot, and while it is unlikely that the original cast will reprise their roles, perhaps there’s a chance that some of the actors could make a guest appearance.

Firefly has a dedicated fanbase, one that might not be too pleased if Disney changes the tone and plot to be more accessible for younger audiences. However, with Whedon no longer being a part of the decisions, it seems highly unlikely that this will be a continuation of the original story. That said, with the current slate of successful original shows that Disney+ has created so far, there's hope that the original magic created in 2002 will translate after all this time.

Looks like the Alliance won in the end.
They always do.

It's a series almost 20 years old now. The majority of the original cast will get nothing more than a Mark Hamil Mandalorian appearance. If that.

Adam Baldwin's character? Oh you bet your ass now he's a tranny.
The man they call Jayne? Surely not.
It'll be bland and forgettable. But no doubt more diverse than the prior verse so they can claim those who dislike it are bigots. I'm seeing later seasons of Legends of Tomorrow but demanding everyone takes them seriously.

Thank god I don't have Disney+. I couldn't be paid to enduire the bland, cookie cutter shit they'll turn this into.
If we had Winner on here, you'd get it.

Firefly doesn't need a reboot. Or a revamp. Or a rebrand for a "more general audience." Pay for the last 3 episodes to be made and that, with the movie, is all that's really needed. It's a self contained tale and we need more of those, not fewer.

Push it out the airlock. Without my sweet mama mechanic it can suck vacuum!

Also it was already ruined by trying to cram two seasons into a movie, no real loss.

Ps. OMG there is a lot of shoddily edited bootleg Kaylee porn on duck duck go, you expect that for that overpriced whore Inara but Kaylee is so wholesome looking (even if she is a canonical slut who gets porked by randos in greasy engine rooms).
Something about her face always reminded me of young Kevin Nash.

also, Firefly was not cancelled too soon. when I was a teenager I thought it was cool, but trying to rewatch it a couple years ago, I cringed out hard. So much of the writing was Buffy cheese.

"There are also political, social, and economic factors that interrogate the morals and ethics of the characters' world and society. "
Translate that:
"Yes, we're putting troons on the show. Deal."

Disney Firefly? Jesus Christ, what's next? A family friendly Blake's 7 reboot? TV-PG Rome?

Dude, JMS has already pitched a #woke reboot of Babylon 5.

They're really going in with no lube on anything sci-fi or fantasy we (Gen-X ers like myself) loved.

Firefly was carried entirely by the show's concept. The writing sucked and there are only a few memorable episodes. It was an outlet for sci fi fans at a time when there wasn't much else. Now they've got the mandalorian to coom over so the reboot is entirely pointless.

With no Andreas and Jerry Doyle to steal scenes and chew scenery? It would be a failure even without the Woke. Anyways all I expect from a reboot of Firefly is failure.

No Andreas, no Jerry, no Richard, no Mira, no Jeff, no Michael, no Ellison to keep it real...

Even at this point if JMS wanted to do a shot-for-shot remake, the cast and writers are gutted. It'd suck. B5 was lightning in a bottle. Even his contemporaneous work (the films, Crusade, season 5) sucked...

I give him a bit of a pass on Season 5 and Crusade due to network meddling, but yeah, you can't recreate what B5 and it's cast had. It wasn't always great, I think DS9 was more consistent, but when it all came together it was fantastic in a way that I don't think anything else in American Sci-Fi has reached. Whatever else he's done, I will give JMS props for banging Pat Tallman though.

Hold up. I thought the entire point of her character was that she wasn't getting any.

For all the greatness of Duet and In the Pale Moonlight, I don't think anything in DS9 encapsulated the sheer seething hatred mortal enemies can have like B5's elevator episode did.
"Don't be an idiot. Don't you want to live?"
"Passionately. But I want to see you dead more!"

G'Kar's cry of distress as they're rescued really seals the deal, too.
I can't picture a disneyified Firefly. The main character's introduction was literally a (very, very casual) murder.
Don't forget stabbing a defeated, helpless man a few times out of spite. Mal Reynolds is merely alright, and he can live with that.

Man, don't even get me started on "The Long, Dark Night of Londo Mollari."

"YOU HAD AN OBLIGATION TO SPEAK OUT!"

gets me every time

Okay, and after that? Seems like the only thing she had in her was her vibrator. It isn't until the end of the movie she finally gets what she needs.
I think her backstory was that she was kind of a hayseed; but then fell in love with the Serenity no? She was fine with being single so long as she was single on her ship. Then Simon came aboard and she got all misty eyed. Kaylee was kind of 'meh' character compared to Zoe and Inara honestly. Pretty forgetable.
