🐱 Here's What to Expect From the Firefly Reboot From Disney+ - Wheadon fans on suicide watch for one

CatParty

Firefly was canceled too soon. Released in 2002, the series took place in the year 2517. Classified as a space Western drama, the series saw the ensemble cast (lead by Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, and Alan Tudyk) travelling on the spaceship Serenity in search of new adventures.

It was an undoubtedly popular series, garnering up to 4.7 million viewers per episode. Astonishingly, however, Firefly was canceled before it finished its first season. Only eleven of the fourteen planned episodes were released, leaving the dedicated fans of the show devastated. Petitions, fundraisers, and online forums were created in attempts to save the show from being canceled forever, but these efforts were ultimately in vain.

However, Disney plans to reboot the series as an exclusive for its streaming platform Disney+. Disney had acquired the rights to the franchise after their 2018 acquisition of Fox. Firefly seems like the perfect option to diversify their current line-up for streaming. Here’s what to expect from the reboot.

The Rebooted Firefly Will Have a New Story

The original Firefly series on Fox was intended for mature audiences. Inara, for example, is explicitly known to be a courtesan on the show. There are also political, social, and economic factors that interrogate the morals and ethics of the characters' world and society. Disney has not confirmed anything about the plot, but there is speculation on how the story will differ. Some routes include picking up right where the series left off and delving into the past of the Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) who fought in the civil war against the Alliance. However, it is most likely that Disney will restart the entire series on a more family-friendly note. While Disney achieved a new "first" in Eternals by featuring the first openly gay character and first real sex scene, it’s unlikely that Firefly will do the same. Instead, they might opt for a narrative that would appeal to a more general audience on its streaming platform.

Joss Whedon Will Not Be Involved

Since Firefly was his vision and dream, many wondered whether or not Joss Whedon would return for the reboot. While Whedon isn't a stranger to creating television properties--Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a much beloved series to this day--it seems that the allegations of workplace harassment against him might be the reason he won't be returning. Indeed, WarnerMedia conducted an investigation,, resulting in swift action from the studio. Whedon then exited the HBO Max series The Nevers, and it’s safe to assume that producers, especially Disney, are cautious about working with him. He has not directed any television shows or movies since leaving The Nevers.

More Details Are Coming

Disney has largely kept quiet about the Fireflyreboot, but they are planning to create the series. Because of the lack of official information, a release date, cast, and specific details haven't been confirmed. There are several different routes that Disney could spin the plot, and while it is unlikely that the original cast will reprise their roles, perhaps there’s a chance that some of the actors could make a guest appearance.

Firefly has a dedicated fanbase, one that might not be too pleased if Disney changes the tone and plot to be more accessible for younger audiences. However, with Whedon no longer being a part of the decisions, it seems highly unlikely that this will be a continuation of the original story. That said, with the current slate of successful original shows that Disney+ has created so far, there's hope that the original magic created in 2002 will translate after all this time.

Looks like the Alliance won in the end.

Thank god I don't have Disney+. I couldn't be paid to enduire the bland, cookie cutter shit they'll turn this into.

Without Animal Mother playing Jayne it would be guaranteed to be garbage, and Disney would never, ever hire someone like the esteemed Mr. Baldwin.

So they're just going to tear out everything that made the original show good and expect it to do well? Business as usual I guess. Can't wait for the eventual "The new Firefly is doing poorly and it's all because of racism, sexism, and Donald Trump." headlines.

Isn't Disney + losing tons of money and on the verge of being financially insolvent precisely because they keep releasing low quality garbage no one wants to watch?

Some real fucking giga brains over at Disney.

The cast will be all women and will be in an alternate universe with kooky humor and Paul Feig will be in charge.

I guess this means the Die Hard series they're working on is going to be TV-PG, and instead of action scenes we'll get lots of scenes of women talking about their emotions and how they're totally into STEM.

You deserve this tripe, modern society. You deserve all of it, and I laugh at your misfortune.

I'm almost a big enough fan of the original series to call myself a Browncoat, but... Once I saw the movie? I became convinced I'm actually glad the series got cancled. What we had was lightning in a bottle, but it wouldn't have lasted.

>Reboot a series with a known autistic hardcore fanbase
>Change everything about it

Well this can only end well.

I can sort of understand Disney not wanting to work with Whedon after the allegations, it's probably not worth the PR hassle. That being said trying to change the original formula means the original fans won't watch it, which kinda defeats the purpose of rebooting something, and making it prototypical family friendly shite means the regular viewers won't watch it since everyone's getting fed up of Disney+ at this point (as evidenced by the subscriber issues)

Push it out the airlock. Without my sweet mama mechanic it can suck vacuum!

Also it was already ruined by trying to cram two seasons into a movie, no real loss.

Ps. OMG there is a lot of shoddily edited bootleg Kaylee porn on duck duck go, you expect that for that overpriced whore Inara but Kaylee is so wholesome looking (even if she is a canonical slut who gets porked by randos in greasy engine rooms).

Última edición:
First Cowboy Bebop, now this. What’s that whole quote? Let the past die, kill it if you have to (also from a Disney movie). Although we’re seeing more of the killing part these days.

Also, the browncoats were a stand-in for the Confederacy and their lives after the Civil War. Mighty problematic to have a series with browncoats as protagonists Disney! Place your bets if they’ll make the Alliance the unequivocal good guys.

Pain. You can expect pain. People saying "it's good Joss Whedon won't be involved," well I kind of agree, except that Firefly was the only thing he developed that was worth a shit.

Also, expect diversity. And Firefly was already pretty diverse, so I mean trannies. The engineering girl? Tranny. Nathan Fillion? Tranny. The prostitute? Tranny #SexWorkIsRealWork. Adam Baldwin's character? Oh you bet your ass now he's a tranny.

Whedon had become super formulaic by that point, so everything was pretty predictable. You could have predicted who was going to die and when months before the premiere.

The dialogue for Kaylee and Jayne made it worth seeing once for nostalgia. They both had some good lines. Mal had a few good lines, too.

Wish the plot had been at the same level of quality as the dialogue. Kind of inverse OT Star Wars going on there.
