Yu-Gi-Oh! / Duel Monsters - RIP Dueling Network and YGOPro

You seem to have a lot of opinions on a game you personally do not play. Why do you waste time talking about stuff you are not even interested in?
He is a /tg/ nigger so autistic arguing is his forte. Quite literally zero point in engaging with him as he will keep running you in circles with the same shit. Talks like a fag to, which leads me to believe he knows exactly what he is doing.

I like Edison but you're coping if you try to say that getting your ass blown out by Heavy Storm is peak gameplay.
I'd rather play a 20 minute game where it comes down to the wire and ends because someone top decks Heavy Storm at the right moment than play a 2 minute game that ends in 1 turn because my starting hand has a Nib and Ash Blossom. Honestly, they're both kind of the same scenario, except one is where we actually play the game, and the second is basically a draw starting hand and scoop cause it sucks.

I also believe majority of people share my opinion. If they didn't, Yu-Gi-Oh would be the most played of the top TCGs instead of the least played and we wouldn't be having this discussion at all.

I looked into Yu-Gi-Oh a bit because of Cimo's videos during COVID. That being said, I saw a lot of Yu-Gi-Oh YouTubers since then, and many of them will straight up say that while they would like to play newer, modern Yu-Gi-Oh, they cannot do so because their views plummet. The audiences cannot follow it so they don't watch it. Compared to when they do older stuff, their engagement is a lot better. It's not because of nostalgia, but casual viewers simply can't follow what's going on. No other TCG has this problem.

I would attribute the waning of YGO's popularity to there being no even halfway decent on-ramp for new or returning players.
I'm aware of the newer metas like Snake Eyes and Tearlament. I can loosely follow a game and know what's going on. I still can't tell you how Pendulums work though and that's a problem. Lord knows I've tried. I can TELL you how they work, but playing a Pendulum deck? That's an entirely different ball game.

Didn't you think they were getting rid off cards that are really old and not that powerful anymore?
Oh I know but still, it's jarring to attend any TRADING CARD CONVENTION and maybe only 1-3 tables even bother selling Yu-Gi-Oh cards at all. It's pretty darn sad.

The rules are not that complicated. It seems intimidating at first but gets easier as you go.
It does not get easier as you go. Yeah, you can learn, but the wall is very high. There are decks that require LITERAL SPREADSHEETS to tell you how they should flow. I'm sorry, but for the average person that is completely unreasonable.

Every TCG has "homework". Keywords, interactions, mechanics etc.
Homework for the competitive play. Not to pick up and play. Yu-Gi-Oh is a lot of work to just pick up and play, even for some structure decks. Each card is a literal paragraph. It's fine for young adults and teens, but if you're a child or parent, this is a massive wall to climb.

It is not that hard. There are such decks but there are ones that are easier to get into as well.
I agree, but you need to understand people new to a game, any game, must be able to pick up and play. The longer a game lasts, the more they play, the more they learn. Sure I can try to teach a 10-12 year old Fiendsmith Tearlament, but I promise you he'll get bored, say this is too much reading and go play literally anything else. That's not good for a game. Ever.

It advertised the game but did not teach much until much later in the GX Seasons.
You know, the idea of a school for dueling in GX was funny and meant as a joke but in 2026, you could probably legitimately open a Duel Academy and it would be 100% warranted.

The idea that if you want to build archetype, not all of the cards are even available in one set all together if you wanted to take the gambling approach that directly supports Konami or a card shop.
Yeah, it's a bit of a problem. I'm guessing you didn't stick around for the Blue Eyes structure deck? Buying singles is the way to go, but nowadays I can see even that being a bit of a pain.

This is what I fucking hate the most about your kind. You warp the heart and soul of something so beloved to the point that it is unrecognizable from what it once was (LIKE A TRANNY!) and then talk down, belittle, insult, socially ostracize anyone with the courage, the willpower, the tenacity, the clear-sighted vision to see you for the snake you are and the evil that you proliferate. You don't have to tell me that you don't play paper, it's obvious. Paper, real, eye-to-eye cardboard in hand game is the most liberating, freeing, true-to-GOD way to play real Yugioh. I can change the rules, actually create infinite formats, set-up cubes, literally limitless possibility of transforming this husk of an over-optimized, garbage waste of time into something that KAZUKI TAKAHASHI HIMSELF WILL CRY AND HUG ME, LEADING ME THROUGH THE PEARLY GATES INTO HEAVEN FOR!!!!!!

I dont feel meaningfully different playing in person and playing online when it comes to magic. I dont see why this wouldnt be the same for yugioh

Interesting, do users from /tg/ usually have a bunch of retarded positions? I only used the board when I was in the process of getting filtered out of 40k

As a MTG player you probably understand the concept of formats. That is an alien thing to a modern Yugioh player. The most they can fathom is time traveling to an older version of the only format they've ever known. What I'm saying is that by playing in-person, with physical cards, one is not limited by the digital chains and company-created rules to enjoy something they know can be, HAS BEEN x50 better

While I get that buying singles is the easiest and cheapest means of building a deck, I am a pack goblin at heart and enjoy ripping one open to see if I got yet another dud or a good pull.

Mate, in this entire thread, I was the one nicest to you.

You literally said you have not played the game in a very long time. You do not play in any way. You are not part of this community.

I can change the rules, actually create infinite formats, set-up cubes,
Anyone can do that. Hell, MD has festivals with random rules all the time. I played the Dice Rally that was like a board game with random rules for the duels. Half LP, half turn time, extra card etc etc. There are festivals that allow only XYZs, only Synchros, only Fusions, only Links. Or maybe they will allow both XYZ and Synchros or something. Or how we played 2012 time travel over the weekend. I do miss the Highlander festival though.

over-optimized,
And this is the greatest proof that you never actually played the game. No one calls it "optimized" or "over-optimied". Under-optimized is a far more common opinion.

Thing is, guys like this scare people away from the game and community. Allowing guys like this be unchallenged is never good.

There are decks that you can try. The Nibiru is there to force the opponent to not extend to the point you cannot handle. Same goes for the Ash Blossom. Some decks can have it be that way.

A whole lot of what is going on is that modern YGO is fun to play (depending on the format) while the older stuff is fun to watch (also depending on the format). There are also decks that are just not as fun to watch as others. You can still have an entertaining deck and have it be competitive and interesting.

Pendulums are difficult until you see them play.

Trust me, I dreaded them but then I found them rather easy to make a deck around. Personally, I like the Endymion archetype.

Never been too fond of the Yuya's cards but you might like them as they are very into the style of play you want.

Oh I know but still, it's jarring to attend any TRADING CARD CONVENTION and maybe only 1-3 tables even bother selling Yu-Gi-Oh cards at all. It's pretty darn sad.
I understand. I do not have this problem myself but still, many just try to off-load the bullshit they were sent.

It does not get easier as you go. Yeah, you can learn, but the wall is very high. There are decks that require LITERAL SPREADSHEETS to tell you how they should flow. I'm sorry, but for the average person that is completely unreasonable.
What you need to do is pick an easy deck that does not need spreadsheets. No one likes those unless they are the uber-meta guy. Pick an easy to learn deck and work your way into the spreadsheet stuff. I hate those too but once you learn the basics, the wall has almost been climbed. My advice is this: Learn to walk before you learn to run marathons.

Homework for the competitive play. Not to pick up and play. Yu-Gi-Oh is a lot of work to just pick up and play, even for some structure decks. Each card is a literal paragraph. It's fine for young adults and teens, but if you're a child or parent, this is a massive wall to climb.
Do not worry about the paragraphs. They are there to prevent Sangan degeneracy. Once you learn what the cards say, you will see it is actually an easy affair. You eventually learn to skim a whole lot of that wording. However, as I said, start with the easy stuff.

I agree, but you need to understand people new to a game, any game, must be able to pick up and play. The longer a game lasts, the more they play, the more they learn. There can be some practice runs on MD. The Solo Mode has tutorials and Single Player that teaches the game. Have you tried that? Part of the reason for that is to teach the real game.

You know, the idea of a school for dueling in GX was funny and meant as a joke but in 2026, you could probably legitimately open a Duel Academy and it would be 100% warranted.
There are classes on being entertainers for online, I think.

While I get that buying singles is the easiest and cheapest means of building a deck, I am a pack goblin at heart and enjoy ripping one open to see if I got yet another dud or a good pull.
Ok, in that case, your best bet is buying 3 copies of a recent SD, looking up what packs have the right reprints to complete you dream deck and you are golden.

In this specific scenario with Nib/Ash it all boils down to playing around it, assuming you're playing a deck that gets destroyed by it (some don't care), that is entirely on you. Nib these days isn't too hard to work around for a good portion of decks, and honestly I find it hardly different then playing around Torrential Tribute or Mirror Force. The former is only easier to deal with because you can pop them OR negate it. Nib you have to either negate it or somehow get your opponent to discard it with Triple Tactics Talent being the best example if they use Ash on you prior.
There are decks that require LITERAL SPREADSHEETS
I wouldn't say required, they're for autists who need to to know exactly what to do get a combo off instead of just trying to figure it out or plan it in their head. Rokket is one of those decks that I play that could use a spreadsheet but it only took me a handful of games to figure out the jist of their combos, and learning the finer details and tricks later. Darklord is another deck that is similar in the regard.

I absolutely agree that Yugioh in general is rough to get into for newer players however. I got two of my buddies to play but both quit because they got sick of 10+ minute combos with an endboard they can't play against, and it especially doesn't help they're playing Traptrix and have no idea what the choke points are for those kinds of decks. It's discouraging.

You could also just ignore the mentally stunted faggot and his faggot posting so he can seethe on his own profile writing his faggot diary entries

I'm going to try and teach one of my friends how to play (he has no idea). Was thinking the best approach was to use a pendulum deck to demonstrate the various summon procedures and let him try out a Horus deck first since the package was reprinted recently. Throw in a few rank 8s and let him play with xyz summons. Probably pull out the Red Dragon Archfiend deck to teach synchros and either Predaplants or Lunalights for fusions.

Are these decks optimal builds? Fuck no. Do I care to tell him about the current meta and the elaborate combos involved? Also no. But I think it's an ok plan to learn the flow of the game before moving on to more complicated stuff.

That is a bit much. Have them start with mono Summon decks. A deck purely for Fusion/Ritual/Synchro/Xyz/Pendulum/Link each would probably be better to ease them into the different summons. Have them really understand the mechanics before tossing them into the water with the sharks.

I mean people have been shilling premodern and 94/95 magic pretty hard. And yugioh has always had 2 formats. Its just that traditional format sucks.

Reread my post because thats essentially what im doing. I'll just run a pendulum magician deck or something since its easy to set up and show off something.

No, I get it. Still, I think Pendulums have been considered the more complex YGO cards for a while. They intimidate people who have not seen them in action. I get that you want to show that there is some complexity in the game but wouldn't E HEROs be better for the basics? Have them start with Flame Wingman, move on to Absolute Zero and then Acid? You know, teach basic Fusion first and then show the Omni and Masked stuff.

I don't own enough of the actual cards to make something that works. I also think HERO is a bit of a mess and theres more to be learned with Preds or Lunas while still being able to make something powerful and straightforward.

Oh no, I am talking about Elemental HEROs, not the rest! Lunalights and Amazoness are also good.

bro it's cardboard

bro it's cardboard
It's the heart of the cardboard that I'm crashing out over homie. Majority of these competitive retards irl and in this thread worship Konami, they worship judges and their rulings, they worship digital online non-social play, they worship "the meta", they worship winning. They are Godless.

What they should be worshiping is Kazuki Takahashi, his love of boardgames and in-person socialization and connection and friendship through getting together and having fun playing, the spirit of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! manga and its drama and entertainment that came from playing with inefficient decks and experimental rules, the playground well-of-fun that this franchise had when it was at its peak, when people legit believed it was the next Pokemon.

F-U-N should be their God, not winning.
