Conversation is coming close to sad incel territory on the wider web. It looks like a fun movie. I'm in.

A lot of people are wondering if this is actually a testbed for a Disney Princesses Movie Franchise, doesn't seem far off considering the promotionals.

Disney could make a killing rattling off a princess movie every year, and a series on their impending streaming service, no doubt. The princess characters define the bulk of their movies. Not to leverage that would be foolish.

You're not alone in noticing that. There's a lot of us who think Disney is simply sweeping that film under the rug these days. There was a recent podcast where John Sanford, who was head of story on Atlantis (and later co-directed Home on the Range), thought the problem with Atlantis and why it wasn't successful was because they chose not to explain away how the Atlantians power works via the crystal, suggesting how plot-driven over character driven the film was...

They have Pocahantas and Mulan, who are not royalty, but have never included Princess Eilonwy. And given that The Black Cauldron is the most notorious of their flops because it nearly bankrupted the studio, yeah, we're not supposed to remember those movies.
Disney are weird about the Princess franchise.
There are certain rules.
1. They must be human (so no Maid Marian or Nala, although apparently Ariel gets in).
2. They must originate in an animated film (so no Leia or Shuri), and it can’t be a sequel.
3. They must be a lead (so no Tiger Lily)
4. They must be born royal, marry into royalty or perform a heroic act (so no Esmeralda or Alice, although it’s pretty obvious that third option was only added to allow Mulan in).

Unofficially, there’s a fifth rule, that flop movies are ignored, so no Kida or Eilonwy.

Curiously, before this film, Anna and Elsa weren’t part of the franchise because Frozen did so insanely well that Disney decided to make it a separate thing. Moana also wasn’t, but that was probably because they didn’t get around to it. I guess Disney want to keep Frozen in the public consciousness while they work on the sequel.

With the luve action Black Couldron movie in the works, I'm hoping that it does well enough to give Eilonwy some recognition. She would probably be my favourite Disney Princess. I love how she smacks down Tarah for thinking he's a hero when he just fucks everything up.

I don't follow Disney stuff very closely. So while I knew there was official stuff for each Disney Princess, I didn't know "Disney Princesses" was an official "branding" or franchise.

It's possible it might be not unlike the advertising for the first movie, which heavily emphasized the video game cameo aspects while deliberately avoiding what the plot of the movie was beyond Ralph ditching his game for another. Hell, most of the main characters didn't even appear in the posters, save for Ralph posing with well-known game characters. And then it turned out the big cameo scene was fairly short and the rest of the cameos were extremely brief. So I'm hoping this "big" princesses scene is actually pretty short and that they've barely revealed anything really plot related.

I'll take a guess and say that age and (maybe) attitude are a factor as well seeing as how Vanellope has not been added to the lineup, despite the first movie being out long enough for the whole princess spoiler to be a non-factor at this point (particularly since she straight-up mentions it in the trailer).

With the luve action Black Couldron movie in the works, I'm hoping that it does well enough to give Eilonwy some recognition. She would probably be my favourite Disney Princess. I love how she smacks down Tarah for thinking he's a hero when he just fucks everything up.
Well, I mean, when the movie introduces her she's in the middle of escaping from the dungeon and merely just invites the other two to come along. Certainly she plays a much more active role overall in the story compared to the four prior princesses. If Mulan hadn't been included to pad out the diversity I'd suggest her active, no nonsense personality was a factor in her exclusion.

I'm both dreading and anticipating the movie.

The movie doesn't look that good if I'm going to be perfectly honest ... But my six year-old self is 110% HERE for the Princesses.

I wouldn't be shocked if this was Disney testing the waters on the possibility of a Disney Princess movie franchise. Hell, I'd prefer those kind of movies over the live action remakes anyday.

I think i'm the only person who finds the idea of the princesses getting together just sorta dumb, tbh...but eh it's obvious this movie ain't for me. seems more like Disney desperately attempting to appeal to Gen Z/millenials.

Brand new trailer's out, we finally get something resembling the plot in this movie:

I'm still not all too impressed by this movie, but again, I laughed more than I did Emoji Movie.
I thought this was the best trailer. It's also the one that focuses the least on crossover franchises. I'm going to guess all the Disney wanking makes up less than ten minutes of the movie. The first trailers for the original Wreck It Ralph would have had you believing that it was going to be the Who Framed Roger Rabbit of video games, but the actual film was far more restrained with that aspect and was focused on the original characters. I think that's going to be the case here, too.

Kinda late on this topic, but,
anyone else find it a little funny how all the Twitter antifa dykes who were complaining about Disney being capitalist pigs months ago are now all cumming themselves over the princess sleepover scene?
This movie is such an obvious fucking Disney corporate circlejerk but no one cares because
"MULAN IS WEARING A VARSITY JACKET #WOKE"
They hate capitalism until all the pretty princesses show up, lul

^Basically. These fuckers years ago were shitting on Ready Player One and the Emoji Movie for doing the same schlock but once Disney does it it's all "woke, diverse, intelligent, feminist, creative, blah blah blah".

They're such shills.

Blah blah "MUH DIVERSITEH!", blah blah "muh nostalgia", blah blah "I wanna fuck the princesses now."

It's a shallow way of thinking, but at this point, I'm not surprised. It's Disney, it's animated, it's pandering to this so-called crowd. They're going to eat it up regardless of all the shit that will be presented int he film.

You would think if Disney wanted to go feminist/woke they'd use Princess Eilonwy (Broke out of jail, proves to be more competent than the lead) Jenny Foxworth (rescues animals in need of a good home) Nala (goes on what might be a suicide solo mission to try to persuade the rightful king to return to his home) and Kida (The only Disney Princess to become an actual Queen) But no let's go with the popular crowd

I think it's more that the love of the first movie that did these sorts of things well but with just gaming caused them to have a lot of faith the sequel would do the same.

Part of that problem is that Disney's been actively trying to hide Kida and Eiloney because of how badly their films bombed. Don't know why considering Princes and The Frog and Sleeping Beauty both bombed too.

Kida (The only Disney Princess to become an actual Queen)
Elsa was crowned as queen pretty early on in the movie. Her coronation was actually what led to the bulk of the movie happening. Her sister is still a princess, though.

The Black Cauldron wasn't just a run-of-the-mill flop though, it nearly caused the already struggling studio to go bankrupt. The reason why they started putting out TV shows in the latter half of the 80's was because it was their last chance to make money if their next movie wasn't profitable (this obviously didn't happen because they started to turn around before Little Mermaid). For Atlantis I think it's more about the shame that it officially ended the Disney Renaissance (even though it's generally ignored it died with Pocahontas).

Actually you know come to think of if they're one of the few princesses that come from a movie that isn't a musical and I wonder if that's not a factor in it as well.

^That and they're not really "marketable", for lack of a better word. The princesses are joined together because they have elements in common that sell: stories based on fairy tales, romance, pretty dresses, animal sidekicks, songs...Eilonwy and Kida have almost none of those things, plus they came from flops, and they don't have any "token/diverse" element to represent in the line (like Pocahontas stands for Native Americans, and Mulan/Merida stand for asians and tomboys...And all these princesses have been doubted of being included in the line or not).
