A 40-foot memorial dubbed the “Peace Cross,” erected in 1925 in honor of 49 men who lost their lives during World War I, must now be torn down, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Wednesday.

The memorial, in Bladensburg, Maryland, was created by the American Legion and is shaped like a cross.

“Today’s decision sets dangerous precedent by completely ignoring history, and it threatens removal and destruction of veterans memorials across America,” First Liberty Institute attorney Hiram Sasser said, according to Fox News.

“This memorial has stood in honor of local veterans for almost 100 years and is lawful under the First Amendment. To remove it would be a tremendous dishonor to the local men who gave their lives during The Great War,” Jones Day attorney Michael Carvin said. First Liberty Institute and the Jones Day law firm are representing the American Legion in this legal battle.

In 2014, the American Humanist Association filed a lawsuit contending that the cross-shaped memorial is unconstitutional.

The group’s foundation believes in “being good without a god.” In their lawsuit, they asked for the memorial to be demolished, altered or removed.

The association claimed the memorial sends “an inherently religious message and creates the unmistakable appearance of honoring only Christian servicemen,” Fox reported.

The Fourth Circuit agreed, stating that the memorial tangles the government and religion because the cross is the “core symbol of Christianity” and “breaches” the wall separating church and state.

The American Legion could appeal directly to the Supreme Court.

You honestly and obviously have no true understanding of what and and all of these people died for, let alone why they even fought. And don't give me no "Religion is obsolete" BS, either. As many have said by now, a lot of people who fought in this (and other wars in general) were a mix of both religious and not-so-much. They fought (regardless of one or the other) because they believed it was the right thing to do at the time!

I'm confident a lot of us may not be into practicing it, but the truth is that religious teachings are what built a lot of countries - it's all about NOT being overtaken by them, something that's an issue to be sure, as it has happened plenty (without saying examples.).
The problem is is that these fuckers will never be satisfied until everyone is like them: which is just as bad as being a religious extremist, if not more so. The hypocrisy here - oh so brilliant and obvious.

I can only hope this doesn't happen more often; these diversity-obsessed fools are no better than any religion they claim to bash that goes too far - these memorials are something that need to be preserved over such BS as protecting people's "feelings from getting hurt". FACT.

The American Humanist Association sent that message to a school in Robbinsdale, Minn., accusing them of violating the U.S. Constitution by allowing students to participate in a community service project at a church that involved preparing meals for impoverished children in Haiti.

The humanists got their britches in a bunch after the family of a student at the School of Engineering and Arts objected to the project being held at Calvary Lutheran Church.

“The packages involved were called ‘manna’ packages, after the edible substances that, according to the Bible, God provided for the Israelites,” attorney Miller wrote.

She was also dutifully offended that Calvary Lutheran Church – looked like a church, noting the “venue involved included extensive religious imagery and symbolism.”

To illustrate her point, the letter to school officials featured damning photograph evidence – including images of a choir clad in robes, stained glass windows, and (brace yourself) a steeple. Oh, the horror!

How the atheists must have trembled at the sight of the cross as they tried to avert their eyes lest they soil themselves and spontaneously combust.

I called Latisha Gray, the spokesperson for the school district – a very nice lady who seemed rather perplexed by the controversy and said they don’t believe they violated the U.S. Constitution.

“We believe that this activity was a service learning activity,” she told me. “There was absolutely no evangelizing or religious activity in the event.”

The service project was sponsored by “Feed My Starving Children.” First, second and third grade students at the school joined hundreds of others in the community to help pre-package meals that will eventually be given to children in Haiti.

Gray said the project was held during school hours as part of a community service project. It’s the second year the school has partnered with “Feed My Starving Children.”

“This has been an overwhelmingly positive event for our students and families,” she said. “The students learn that there are people in the world who are not as fortunate of them. They believe they are being a part of the solution.”

Gray said the school is aware that a parent had complained about the event.

“We do take any parent concern very seriously,” she said. ‘We want to make sure that the activity we are doing is beneficial and doesn’t cause a lot of backlash or unrest in the community.”

The AHA said the parent also complained about the event last year.

“Thus, it is even more egregious that, after the parental complaint was made last year, you did nothing to remedy the problem, but instead suggested that the parent was misguided for complaining,” Miller wrote.

AHA said they don’t have a problem feeding hungry children. They just have a problem doing it inside a “theologically-charged environment.”

“We are not opposed to educating children about poverty around the world, nor do we object to their participating in a nonreligious program to provide assistance,” Miller wrote.

Alliance Defending Freedom, a law firm specializing in religious liberty cases, offered to defend the school district free of charge.

“Public schools should encourage students to participate in as many community service opportunities as possible. The Constitution does not prohibit students from cooperating with a religious organization to help starving families, which is not any sort of government endorsement of religion,” said ADF attorney Matt Sharp. “Neutrality toward religion does not permit schools to discriminate against beneficial programs simply because they are run by Christians. That is not neutrality but the very hostility toward religion that the First Amendment forbids.”

This is a new low even for humanists. It takes a special kind of godless thuggery to take food out of the mouths of starving children.

This reminds me of that time when the "American Atheists" filed a lolsuit to remove a steel beam cross from the 9/11 memorial museum. The cross wasn't even made for the memorial or anything; it was literally recovered from the rubble of Ground Zero. Thankfully the lolsuit was dismissed by a judge, but still. Sorry for :powerlevel: a bit here. It's pretty much a given. I've had relatives who fought in WW2, Korea, and even one british ancestor that fought for england. Even a brother of mine served in Iraq for a few years. The point being is that our soldiers fought that war because if they didn't, they'd have nothing left and so that those they love won't have those horrors brought to their doorstep.
