Disaster With ‘Elio,’ Pixar Has Its Worst Box Office Opening Ever - Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair.

The original space adventure sold about $21 million in tickets at domestic theaters from Thursday night through Sunday, putting new pressure on the once-unstoppable studio.

Pixar knew that “Elio,” an original space adventure, would most likely struggle in its first weekend at the box office.

Animated movies based on original stories have become harder sells in theaters, even for the once-unstoppable Pixar. At a time when streaming services have proliferated and the broader economy is unsettled, families want assurance that spending the money for tickets will be worth it.
But the turnout for “Elio” was worse — much worse — than even Pixar had expected. The film, which cost at least $250 million to make and market, collected an estimated $21 million from Thursday evening through Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada, according to Comscore, which compiles box office data.

It was Pixar’s worst opening-weekend result ever. The previous bottom was “Elemental,” which arrived to $30 million in 2023.

A month ago, when the “Elio” marketing campaign began to hit high gear, Pixar and its corporate owner, Disney, had hoped that “Elio” would, in the worst-case scenario, match the “Elemental” number. Instead, it fell 30 percent short.

In wide release overseas, “Elio” collected an additional $14 million, on a par with the initial international results for “Elemental.”
Quality did not appear to be a factor: Reviews for “Elio” were mostly positive, and ticket buyers gave the movie an A grade in CinemaScore exit polls. The Rotten Tomatoes audience score stood at 91 percent positive on Sunday.

Pixar has also recovered from a period during the coronavirus pandemic when Disney weakened the animation studio’s brand by using its films to build the Disney+ streaming service, bypassing theaters altogether. Last year, Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” was the No. 1 movie at the global box office. It sold $1.7 billion in tickets.

But original animated ideas have fallen out of favor at the box office, analysts said. Pixar is not alone. DreamWorks Animation’s “Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken” flatlined in 2023 with $5.5 million in opening-weekend sales. Illumination Animation’s “Migration” arrived to $12 million that year.

The problem for Pixar is that its originals remain wildly expensive. “Ruby Gillman” and “Migration” each cost 50 percent less than “Elio” did. (Pixar movies are still produced entirely in the United States, increasing labor costs. Some other studios have started to rely on overseas production.)
On Sunday, Disney said it hoped a broader audience would find “Elio” over the coming weeks. The company pointed to “Elemental,” which overcame weak initial sales to ultimately collect nearly $500 million worldwide.

Families have had a lot of theatrical options of late. Universal’s live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” remake, for instance, repeated as the No. 1 movie in North America over the weekend, with $37 million in ticket sales.

Second place went to the auteur horror sequel “28 Years Later” (Sony Pictures), which debuted to about $30 million. David A. Gross, a film consultant who publishes a newsletter on box office numbers, called that total “excellent.” Directed by Danny Boyle, “28 Years Later” cost about $60 million, not including marketing.

“Elio” was third.

KPop Demon Hunters doesn't need muh diversity to stand out - it's a good, if derivative, movie with quality writing, directing and music. Even if you were to replace the Korean aspects with something else, it would still have been successful.

Then again, the racial aspect likely played a part - Koreans and Korean culture are globally palatable, gay little boy spics are not.

I do predict the creators of KPop Demon Hunters will fuck it up with the sequel because they'll allow identity politics and feminist talking points to take precedence over writing an entertaining story.

Treasure Planet and Atlantis failed miserably to be good action films for boys because they were visually unappealing

Are you high or just incredibly stupid?

I'm not high or stupid. I have good taste while you have the bad taste of an incompetent moon cricket if you think Atlantis and Treasure Planet are brilliant, when they are such utter dog shit with zero redeeming values.

On a flight a while ago, I caught part of Elio, and it really is fucking terrible. Normally I sleep on planes, but a baby was crying, so I ended up looking between the seats to watch one of the seatback screens playing Elio that some preteen girl was watching. A few things I noted after about ten minutes of watching:

-All of the characters are simultaneously ugly, forgettable, and generic, especially the spic Grubhub characters.
-Everything really does happen in the center of the screen. Almost all focus is on one or two characters at the middle of the scene, over a blurred, clown barf tone background.
-The animation is janky as fuck, looks like an amateur Youtube video.
-It really is just such an ugly movie overall. Colors, designs, composition, everything.

Funnily enough, I had a gin and cranberry brought to me, spent a few minutes looking out the window, and when I looked back, the girl had changed to something else well before the movie was even close to over. Imagine a kids' movie not being able to hold the attention of a preteen girl, stuck on a plane, with nothing to do for hours. That's just embarrassing lol. No idea about the sound, story, characters, etc., but just the visual travesty for something made in a visual medium was enough to be totally off putting. I think every other complaint is just gravy on top of that unfixable, root problem with the film.

The director didn't have a gay childhood, he mindraped himself into believing he was always that way thinking back on his innocent memories (unless he was actually molested and never got help). The grooming of innocent childhood needs to be aptly punished.
I didn't mean gay as in the director being gay but yes he's gay as well but not in the same way.

Treasure Island is just an ugly book with ugly looking pirate characters and a boring main character.
Behead those who insult N.C. Wyeth. I read that book so many times growing up that this image is burned into my brain.

I was already a young adult when Treasure Planet came out, but not above watching a kids' movie if it appealed to me, and Treasure Planet didn't. The idea of a space ship styled after an Age of Sail warship just seemed idiotic to me, and the main character was a cringey twink with a faggy haircut.

What if Toy Story 5 has bean mouth characters?
4 already fucked up the character design consistency on several characters and notably made kid andy look weirdly like a bastard mix of tf2 scount and some overwatch shit

Like it's not that he looks "Bad" it's that 3 already made an HD remake of him that's clearly the same kid from the first 2 despite the better animation tech. I think what makes it especially egregious is Buzz and Woody are still in the same artstyle as the first 3 movies. you may go "well but they're toys though!" LOOK AT BIG AL. LOOK AT MOVIEBLOB.

HE AINT NO TOY PEOPLE JUST LOOK LIKE THIS IN TOY STORY

Incredibles 2 fucked up character design as well but like this is the same kind of thing as what happened with the shrek 5 teaser trailer somehow fucking up Shrek's kid's eye color on top of genericifying the artstyle in a weird way.

It's like it's either shit that looks like the fake ai images that can't get the artstyles right or grubhub beanmuth. Those are your two options.

Atlantis is awesome and had good visuals and decent story. Your taste is shit.

I can get where he's coming from. It wasn't bad animation as in "low budget" but it wasn't a very appealing-looking film. Neither Milo or the guy from Treasure Planet were appealing, likeable protagonists, Milo was a lovable dork who just wanted to go an adventure. And from my memory, every single scene was dark, and by that I mean dark in appearance. Treasure Planet was sort of the same way. It wasn't even stylized darkness like Batman TAS, it was visually unappealing and made everything look like mud. I will accept your :disagree: stickers now.
