Off topic but recently I saw this song mentioned and having looked up the context I am just sorta baffled at the entire thing. The movie synopsis reads like it showcased the total shitshow and decay of Weimar Berlin but it tries to make it all sound good, and the scene is meant to be chilling just because it is nazis without any of the context that they had done nothing bad by that point still and in fact wouldn't even be in power for another 2 years.

Reminds me of a different movie which I thought was called something like The Lizard's Egg but I cannot for the life of me find it, which was also set in Weimar Germany (though this one ever earlier, around the time of the Beer Hall putsch) which similarly had absolute fucking loser degenerates as the main characters who you were apparently suposed to sympathize with. I remember watching it in a history class at university and my only thought was "holy fuck these people are complete fucking losers what the fuck are they doing with their lives why are they just going along with all this societal collapse around them and not trying to save themselves" as they wasted their little money on night life and fucking while the SA and KPD fight in the streets.

That's not the worst take I've heard.

Thinking about the movie, Weimar Germany seems very free on the one hand and very decadent on the other.

Since the play and movie were obviously made about the rise of Naziism, it's hard in the show to tease out whether the decadence of the era led to the rise of the Nazis, whether the rising fascism led to a cultural downspiral, or whether the Depression that gave rise to the fascism of the Nazis also gave rise to Weimar decadence.

In general, the characters are likable, but Sally Bowles is kinda crazy independent of politics and the plot orbits around that.

I don't think they're "concern trolling," but I don't think it's genuine either. If you say one thing one day and the exact opposite the next day, that is the exact opposite of genuine.

These people change their "deeply held beliefs" more often than they change their underwear.

It always boggles the mind how he can not connect this. I know it's a self-image thing but that should have limits theoretically. Irony is if he came here and talked, he'd get just as much shit, but he'd also have people genuinely engage him in debate and idea exchange as well. Which is something he doesn't seem to get on troonsky, at least he'd know where he stands with us instead of this backstabbing purity test shibboleth bullshit.

Will doesn't seem to realize that if he turns off the computer, deletes Twitter/Bluesky, and goes outside, most (if not all) of this would go away. He's just so addicted to the never-ending pursuit of feeling morally superior that he just can't bring himself to log off. It's really just the same pattern of behavior as every other lolcow. They all complain about the harassment and trolls but never even consider leaving the internet. It eliminates any sympathy I would otherwise have for these people.

Slight pushback, friendo.

First of all, and I learned this with the environmental community, you'll have people who are super informed and educated and who have authentic deeply held beliefs, but for every one of those people you get nine midwits who outwardly appear to be deeply committed but who can't explain basic shit like the carbon cycle. So for any group of people who are making the same arguments, whether or not their beliefs are actually deeply held takes some interrogation.

Second of all, and I think this is a problem no matter time or space, a lot of times people should change their "deeply held beliefs" based on new information but they don't.

What it boils down to is that people genuinely enjoy being smug, self-righteous assholes and that overrides shit like "being nice" and "being factually correct."

In fairness, he got relentlessly clowned on by the online right when he was on Twitter. They did that to every major online lefty figure, but Will actually tried to argue back with FACTS and GOODTHINK. He kept losing, but refused to acknowledge it, which is why they kept going after him; nobody likes a smug loser. Then he got raped by Grok, which under the Transitive Nazi Rule is also right wing.

But after fleeeing to Bsky, the only people still harassing Will are leftists. That plus the WSS make him a bit endearing to the few non-leftists still paying attention to him, but since all he can see are leftists, all he sees is the harassment.

If Will accidentally stumbled into some hypothetical real-life meetup of far-right poasters they would probably stand up and applaud, ask for photos with him, try to get him to say lines from the Will Stancil Show, etc. If he stumbled into a hypothetical meeting of Bluesky trantifa guys he would be in genuine physical danger (and not just from the smell).

Will is one of those people who I fundamentally disagree with, but hes just so earnest about his beliefs without being a prick (like say, your average trantifa) that I cant dislike him. He'd probably be fun to go drinking with. He'd call me a fascist, id call his a fucking commie but we'd both agree the bartender had great tits.

Its rather ironic that because hes not a militant asshole, the rest of the loony left cant stand him.
