His brain just refuses to make the last leap, that the ideology is the source of the bad behavior, and not merely the random adherents. It's genuine to them. When that black woman complained that Stancil was disagreeing with a black woman instead of "centering her voice", she actually believes he is wrong and black women should be centered. If you or I did it, we would be concern trolling, trying to use Will's ideology against him.
The disconnect is that the black woman won't admit her ideology is all about power structures, seizing power, and holding it against her enemies. It has almost nothing to do with racism or equality, even though she would use those words to defend her claims.
Will here is just now glimpsing that underlying quest with power, and correctly interpreting their tactics as power-seizing tactics instead of injustice-fighting tactics. His disconnect is that he thinks it's a flaw of the person, and not their ideology. His blind spot happens because he shares their ideology naively, but doesn't feel the same... will to power, so to speak.
