Something called the cold war...
Or further than that, there are ethnic, linguistic and cultural divides that date thousands of years. The Latin based people of Italy, France, Spain etc, the Germanic people of Germany, Austria etc, and Slavic, Poland eastwards.
They have all had thousands of years of historical and cultural events that have shaped them to be different. Only in the last few hundred years did they start becoming more homogeneous, and in spite the EU trying to create a "European Identity", those differences still remain.
