Am I the only one shocked that you guys are so cucked you have no issue with a fucking cashier asking you for ID to buy alcohol or cigarettes as a clear adult?
Maybe it's because I grew up in a country that doesn't give a fuck, but I can't get over it to begin with, the validity of the ID is somewhat irrelevant to me.

Stores can get serious fines for underage sale, it's not a minor violation they can just wing like it's no big deal. Tens of thousands of dollars and penalties up to and including loss of liquor/tobacco licenses.
Basically enough to put you out of business if you have repeated violations.
Some people look pretty young for their age for a while so it's better to be safe than sorry. It's also an added CYA in the event someone of-age buys alcohol or tobacco and provides it to a minor. They can prove that of-age person bought the items and that they sold it to someone who was legally allowed to buy it.
The US' bizarre and incoherent attitude towards alcohol is a whole other matter.

this is what happens to me. they make you do in person so many times in between online renewals. i dont think im up for online renewal when my current id expires.
yeah in the us at least you can get into serious trouble for selling to minors. so it makes sense that most store are going to take it seriously.
yeah back when i actually did drink i looked very young for my age. through my mid tweenties i looked very young, this was especially true until i grew a beard, so i always felt it was justifiable for a cashier to ask for my id.

At least one of the grocery chains here has recently made the ID requirement unable to be overridden at the point of sale. If the cashier can't scan an ID, they literally can't sell you booze.

I'd assume it's possible to make a barcode that scans right. The stores just take a government-issued photo ID, so the odds are that out of the entire country, someone has leaked how to take a birthdate and expiration date and format the check algorithm for those two dates
Probably easier to just keep track of which stores visually verify IDs, though.

because in cases like this its likely an actual "electronic ID" match is sent to the issuer of the ID and must be successful before continuing and if its expired then it probably shows up as not existing in the issuers system.
if you can't check the boxes your company's accounting department isn't paying shit

There are websites that will make already expired documents as "movie props" so an internet savvy minor could make a fake that way.
