I dont understand this, its not like italy is cultureless, typical and bland. Italians are amongst the most cultured, and interesting people of europe. And nobody can deny that its a unique culture that throughout history starting with the romans has influenced most of, if not all of western europe.
Italian amerians still kind of stick out as different (altough not as much as they used to) amongst american whites (due to most immigration happening in the 40s and 50s) there are still a lot of americans whose parents or grandparents came from italy. Phill's dad is ITALIAN ffs (at least to my knowlege)
I cant understand why phil would trade his heritage for a cultureless, abysmal, racist, sexist, dystopian country that doesn't even exist.
Maybe theres another reason, but i dont know.

I won't look a gift horse in the mouth - I'm rather fond of all things Italian myself, and it would be a pity if Phil ruined it for me.

The ironic thing is that Latin America had lots of Italian immigration. More than the U.S. by far.
I can confirm, i'm mexican (half anyway) and most of that side of the family is mostly of italian descent, a lot of my mexican friends (maybe 1/4 have italian somewhere if not most of their bloodline. I'm very proud of my heritage, after all isn't italy a culture to be proud of?

Phil misunderstood what kind of Latin he was

His dad is Italian. He hates his dad.

Looking at Phil, he's obviously not comfortable in his own skin for a lot of reasons. Though moving beyond that, I have an autistic friend who told me that autistic people (and this might just be him projecting) get obsessive about their own identity to a large degree. They don't really understand people on an intuitive level so they need to find a connection with them on purpose. Whatever cultural/subcultural environment they're in isn't molded into the rest of their life as a result, it's something they have to constantly reaffirm to themselves.

I don't think it's surprising that most autistic people I've met get really, really into whatever community they can find that accepts them. Church, cosplay shit, punk rock, whatever. They define themselves by relation to these things on a really intense level.

Of course that is mostly me talking out my ass.

Thing is with Phil he hates the culture he came out of and wanted to pick a different one.

Truth is absolutely none of that applies to Phil. He grew up in America and was exposed to culture that had nothing to do with his bloodline.

He hates the fact he's whiter than sour cream - maybe part of the reason he's obsessed with tattoos is to cover it up so it can't be seen. He wants the attention, to be babied essentially, and being pure white boy bred stock isn't going to do it for him.

As it just so happened he thinks he'll win oppression points by claiming to be transethnic and communist. Also probably why he idealized Puerto Rico - it's part of the US but not subject to the exact same government that states normally have, which is enough distance for him to consider it a sovereign nation or some bullshit.

Much as I love my prosciutto and expensive cheese, in America that cultural identity is slowly eroding. None of the super Italian people I know speak Italian or have anybody in their family that speaks Italian. And I live in guidoville. Give it another couple decades and whatever cultural quirks remain will be consumed by the soulless morass that is the rest of America.

That said, I don't think Phil ever connected with that part of his history on any meaningful level. Why latin America appealed to him specifically is beyond me. Personally I feel like it has more to do with what he's opposed to in our society rather than what he values. Thing is his politics are also pretty shallow as far as I can tell. "Whitey imperialism bad! Latin America good!" Seems like it's mostly platitudes on his part.

Phil knows he's a reject, same as Chris. He doesn't know how to amend this situation, and he desperately wants to be something else, so now he's playing pretend. This is why he's in even worse shape than Chris -he hasn't just deluded himself into believing he's a pretty young lady, he's deluded himself into believing he's a pretty young latina lady.

Phil wants to be a rat king and the rat kings say Italian is white. White and male are the worst things you can be to them, so Phil has found a way to avoid being both of those things..... even though he's still a white man.

He probably hates his hairy body, and blames it to his heritage.
Just wait for his Mafiaphase!

Phil's infatuation with "Latinx" started because of J-Lo. Phil likes to regularly overhaul his entire identity for subjects he likes, in a very shallow and poser way.

As for Phil claiming to be from PR, it began due to J-Lo being Puerto Rican. Not only that, but he thinks all of Latin America is one big homogenous (and probably Tumblresque) culture. This is someone who thinks tacos from Jack In The Box are authentic Latin American food.

Última edición:
If Phil was smart and did some research, he'd know that Sicily was held by Muslim counts for a pretty long time (long enough to convert a good portion of the populace to Islam iirc)

Seeing as Phil has had a boner for Islam for quite a while now, it would be the perfect excuse to get some oppression points.

Because he's racist against Italians. He needs to check his privilege at the fucking door.

But really, imo Italy is one of the best countries in the entire world (you can't beat its natural beauty, historical significance, or its food) and Phil inherently sucks so much he's repelled by its awesome. That's why he chooses to be a "Latinx." Latin America is a gigantic fucking continent full of countless cultures that Phil knows absolutely nothing about. I get the idea that he thinks Latin America is just a slightly better Africa, which makes him feel as though he can reap all the oppression points that comes from being from there. If he found out that many Latin American countries are actually fairly advanced and are good places to live (they're between the West and third-world countries, definitely leaning towards the Western end) he'd be upset because he doesn't get as many of his imaginary oppression points.
