Who is/was behind the anti-smoking push? - Always money involved

It wasn't the American Lung Assocation or the queers at Butt Out! that convinced me to not smoke (at least not regularly; I will puff a disposable vape or a cigar a couple times a year). Though the one with the footage where they're doing an autopsy on a smoker and squeeze all the cheese out of their aorta was pretty persuasive.

What scared me away from it was my high school baseball coach. Dude smoked like a chimney and had a face as rough as the leather of our gloves. He collapsed during games on two different occasions.

Thankfully, he has since quit.

Smoking originally got huge because of a mass-scale corporate-government collaboration during WW2, so it's kind of funny that now there are people suspecting that some kind of corporate-government collusion is behind getting people to not smoke. IMO, the biggest thing that drove anti-smoking sentiment was seeing an entire generation die of lung cancer and emphysema.
As opposed to multiple generations currently dying of diabetes and heart failure causing not only no backlash, but an astroturfed body positivity movement which promotes being fat?

The thing about anti smoking is that it was a hard 180 in media coverage while also starting to promote recreational drug use, which effects are becoming infinitely worse than smoking.

Nobody is saying y'all can't smoke. It's basically a warning of the side effects if you DO decide to pursue that choice.
smoking campaigns are way past the point of "its bad for you", virtually every single smoker in the world is aware that it is bad for you, they (we) do it because its 5 minutes of freedom and relaxation every couple of hours.

Smoking campaigns today are designed to shame you for making that choice because how dare you step out of the norm, why can't you smoke weed like a NORMAL PERSON?!

Smoking tobacco =/= smoking weed. There's more health issues associated with smoking cigarettes than weed. Not the same thing.

I have a suspicion that the American Indian was on to something that tobacco is actually healthy when smoked the way they smoked it. And that means pipe smoking.

Pipe smokers have better health outcomes. It's probably self-selection (healthier people, hipster faggots, are more likely to pipe smoke), but there are many differences in use. You roll the smoke around in your mouth, which gives mouth cancers, but minimizes smoke down the lungs. It's a pain in the ass to light and smoke a bowl (instead of a cigarette, which is explicitly designed to be disposable), so unless you walk around with it 24/7 (like Grant did with cigars) it's much harder to develop a habit; cigar and pipe smokers are rarely addicts, whereas cigarette smokers usually are. You also, crucially, use YOUR OWN TOBACCO and it can be natural tobacco that's unadulterated with loads of disgusting additives.

Common sense says that sucking smoke into your lungs is retarded. The stomach, liver, and others can survive mild poisoning on a regular basis because your monkey ancestors had to. The lung works as the express delivery platform of chemicals to the blood. However, there's only one thing you will ever breathe that you evolved to breathe: air. Anything else is going to necessarily tear the organ up.

I haven't been quite willing to actually start pipe smoking, though. I'm just kind of scared of if I'm wrong? Not like there's a lot to be gained. I smoke about three or four cigars a year. Got some special offer from a magazine for a travel humidor and a set of cigars at a ridiculously low deal. Unlike booze I guess I just haven't used enough of it for it to have hooked me.

One last thing, smoke and drink at the same time (which people tend to) and the damage goes up massively. I don't know a scientific explanation for it, but I liken it to rubbing your throat raw with alcohol and then mashing tobacco on that.

Overall, I suspect pipe smoking is mildly bad but in a way that's not significant enough to worry about, and the Indians knew what they were doing in contrast to the White's man-made horrors.

Smoking pipe tobacco got me addicted to cigarettes. I don't really see how it's in any way healthier. It's equally as addictive. Nicotine is the addictive part of tobacco. There's lots of nicotine in pipe tobacco, sometimes much more than in cigarettes depending on what type of tobacco you buy. You smoke it for longer, the smoke is heavier and thicker. When you do inhale that shit it's worse than cigar smoke.

I actually got autistically enough into it that I went down to the tobacco store when they had some famous pipe tobacco guy there and they invited people to hang out in the store and smoke chat and shit. I remember this one lady smoked so much she ran outside and puked.

Smoking the pipe was a lot grosser too. You always got ash on your hands and cleaning them was pretty damn gross. I ended up switching to rolling my own cigarettes after I got fed up with the hassle of pipe smoking.

Personally, I think the reason why cancer deaths started to skyrocket from smoking is the fact that most commercial cigarettes barely have any actual tobacco in them. They're made from sheet tobacco. Which is basically, tobacco scraps pulped using a bunch of nasty solvents and then turned into paper, which is sprayed with freebase nicotine then shredded and mixed with a little bit of real tobacco. That and the use of radioactive fertilizer on tobacco starting in the 1950's and the sheer amount of pesticides and other chemicals sprayed on the tobacco plants while they're growing and the chemicals used in processing commercial tobacco into cigarettes.

And then politicians realized they could sue tobacco companies and win even more money because their states had to pay healthcare costs for lung cancer and heart disease
I remember there was a study done that smoking actually slightly decreased government costs in aggregate, because while health care costs increased, they were offset by the higher mortality rate, which means less retirement payouts.

@Grub The argument I heard focused on the usage pattern with pipes vs cigarettes, that a cigarette smoker gets an intense hit of nicotine every time they suck it in and the way people smoke cigarettes has them doing it regularly throughout a day, so they get conditioned more easily. Habit formation as much as the chemical addiction.

But that's comparing my "I read" to your "I lived," so we know which is more credible, LOL.

So would you say that pipe tobacco is more addictive but less physically harmful?

You still get a rush of nicotine. That rush cigarette smokers feel is from the freebase nicotine. I used to roll the fancy organic tobacco shit. I noticed a big difference between my cigarettes and 'real cigarettes'. Real cigarettes made me feel sick when I smoked them and gave me a head rush the rolled cigarettes I smoked didn't do that, but you'd definitely still feel the nicotine.

I really don't know if it's less physically harmful or not. Pipe smoking fucked my throat up but didn't really mess with my lung capacity. Cigarettes made breathing hard and there was an immediate noticable improvement within a week of quitting.

and that's super bad if government money is paying for the health care.
As much as I hate health care costs in the US, one great argument against state financed health care is that suddenly the state has a financial interest in preventing you from doing anything it deems unhealthy.

Smoking is expensive. It is harmful. It smells terrible. It is socially embarassing and not efficient to have to take "smoke breaks". Most people realize this. Smokers may also realize this too late unfortunately after the addiction sets in. The creature of habit would rather continue their "comfortable", unchanging lifestyle than work towards good health.

The build-up in your lungs prevents your lungs from properly exhaling contaminants, and as a result you acquire and attain more 75% more radiation than the average person who would usually dissipate the Earth surface radiation within 2 weeks.

Mister Metokur was warned by his doctors early in his illness that he should stop smoking. He did not stop smoking and went through radiation therapy. Nigga got higher dose than usual and fucked his body up. Then he got chemotherapy which is the most barbaric modern method of eliminating illness on his already weakened body.

Literally just stop putting those nasty ass sticks in your mouth, nigga.

There’s thousands of distinct chemical entities in cigarette smoke. Some are very bad for you, some are a mix and some have some beneficial properties.
Benzo a pyrene is a carcinogen. So are a few dozen other of those chemicals. Most smokers lungs show significant black deposits and pathology.
Then there’s stuff like nicotine, which is addictive as fuck but seems to have multiple interesting effects. It’s not directly carcinogenic but it probably helps blood vessel growth which will assist existing tumours
I briefly worked on a schizophrenia program years back and one of the first things I asked was ‘why is everyone smoking?’ The answer was ‘it makes me feel better’ and cigs DO make schizophrenia patients feel better. Some of the same receptors that nicotine hits are the ones that drugs to ‘treat’ the condition hit. Patients with Alzheimer’s lose a lot of these receptors. Smokers have significantly lower Parkinson’s rates and they seemed to get less covid
There’s probably a lot of beneficial stuff in tobacco smoke but there is no doubt that there’s a lot of bad shit as well that causes cardiovascular and respiratory issues.
Vaping is I think as bad if not worse. Avoid vaping at all costs. If you want nicotine, use gum or patches
