I remember it was dying out for awhile in the early 2000's then the tumblr era kicked in and now its everywhere with zoomers and it seems more ridiculous than ever. Why would you want a bull nose ring of all things?

Am I just getting old and don't understand those damn kids on my lawn screaming about pronouns?

Likely different reasons for different people. A form of defacement and self harm because of low self confidence, looking fat and unattractive so maybe getting a piercing will create some sort of edgy attractiveness, Wanting to rebel but not actually rebelling in any meaningful way.

Also as a way to seek differentiation, a way of signaling your rebellion against the tribe leaders to put it some way.
Personalizations to remind you who you are supposed to be, let's say a punk or something of thay style.
In many cultures they could be sign of rank or part of initiation rituals into a new social status.
Many men and women also find body art to be arousing, so for some a fetish as well.
