Containment What will happen when Barb dies?

There probably won't even be a funeral. Chris in all likelihood will probably try to avoid reporting her death for as long as possible once she finally does croak, either because he wants to continue to live off of her social security checks or because he has some understanding of how much more badly his life is going to get once his mother is gone from the world.

Either way his plan will eventually fail and the authorities will get involved. Which is where the real fun begins.
Isn't that technically illegal?

Continuing to collect someone's social security after they've died? Yeah, there's no "technically" about it. That's quite illegal.

From the Office of the Inspector General's website:

It may be considered fraud if a person makes a false statement on an application or does not tell SSA of certain facts that may affect benefits.

For example:

  • A person fails to report that they are working or have returned to work.
  • A person fails to report they are in jail.
  • A person fails to notify SSA of the death of a beneficiary and continues to receive and cash the checks of the deceased person.

One guy in Virginia got 21 months in prison for fraudulently collecting SSA and VA benefits, but he soaked the government for almost $200,000 over the course of eight years, filed a lot of false statements, and perjured himself, so I'm guessing they threw the book at him. I doubt Chris would be able to maintain the lie for that long if he tried to keep collecting Barb's checks after she died.

Yeah but honestly he's not going to jail. The guy is retarded. They'll give him a slap on the wrist and he'll be in some assistant living.
I doubt Chris understands the procedures for getting a funeral ready with the funeral home, etc.
Most people don't, that's why they rip people off. I've told my family to donate my organs like the donor note says on my license and cremate me the cheapest way possible and spread my ashes in the woods. From dust I come to dust I go.

Yeah but see the first part of this post. He'll escape any real punishment. Like usual.

He'd blab about her dying on twitter for sympathy tugboats and china.

This is such a depressing thread. Sorry to butt in Chris isn't my usual bag, I'm an Amberlynn/Troon follower myself but occasionally a Chris watcher and didn't realise his life had got so bad this year. I'm not up to speed on him so excuse the dumb question, but if he is diagnosed with Autism and whatever else he fucking clearly has going on, and is being given money by the state - does this not come with the option of ANY kind of support? He does not function. Are there not government agencies that offer support to people like him in his community to help him to not end up on the street when Barb dies? I am aware he's a complete fucking tool and I certainly would want to get within 50 miles of him but the street isn't where he belongs for fucks sake. He will die.

edit - would NOT want

Chris has a tinge of narcissism and believes he is one of the most high-minded, intelligent and capable people in the world. He will always deny that he is incapable of caring for himself.

According to VA law he can't be hospitalized without his cooperation unless a support group can get a psychiatrist to state in a court hearing that he doesn't have the capacity to volunteer for hospitalization, or if he's actively suicidal or homicidal. And even then that's only a temporary solution to any housing crisis.

I think the best possible outcome for Chris is for somebody to work with him to get him into a homelessness charities' supported housing.

This is the USA, not Sweden, the government doesn't give a rats ass about random mentally ill drifters freezing on the streets.

Thanks for this. He does have psych issues but it's the Autism that'd get him the support in most countries with some sort of social welfare system. The actual Autists I know in the UK that are as challenged as he is have a social worker and the funding they have from the state is used specifically to enable them to live as independently as possible. I know the UK isn't the US, but it is hardly Sweden either. I've seen the kind of state schools they have for Autistic kids in the US (perhaps it's patchy and I was watching a limited number of documentaries that only looked at the good stuff, but still)- where is the disconnect for adult services when this guy is clearly about to move from internet joke to closed KF thread? Is it as you say that he is massively delusional in which case it's undiagnosed schizophrenia or what? This shit just isn't (as) funny anymore.

edit - i know the UK is a shit hole in a lot of ways, but if you see someone sleeping rough and if you feel so inclined you contact streetlink and properly trained people (NOT cops) go and find that person and try to help them. every time. https://www.streetlink.org.uk

@guccigash chris isn't schizo or anything like that. He's just waaaay into escapist shit because he knows he can't do much about his circumstances (without putting forth any effort to, anyway). He'd exploit the welfare system in any other country like he does now, and still beg online for toy money after the bills were paid by lying his ass off. He knows exactly what he does (if he doesn't it's because he's too dumb/ignorant to get into the meat and potatoes of it, because that means STRESS from effort).

Also if he had a social worker that worker would
A)troll him
B)try to skim from his tugboat
C)get sick of his shit and bail

He functions just fine, he's been looking for a place to live outside of 14BC on and off for a while and Barb's not even cold yet. Of course when the merge finally happens all his money problems will be solved and he'll be living in a large mansion filled with Sonichu funko pops.

This is the reality you've stumbled on.

Thank you for enlightening me. I'm kind of glad he isn't tying up any resources that people genuinely unable to function need, if they are actually available where he is. Still would prefer not to see him on the streets but jesus.....what as asshole.

Sorry if I speak out of ignorance, but to my own good credit (heh), I’ve never been a degenerate who spends money that I don’t and never will have.

If Barb’s debt is nearing or over seven years of age, wouldn’t Chris be able to default to the collectors for an impossibly low sum? I’ve known people with medical bills who ultimately ignore them, then offer the collections agency about a fraction of what the accrued debt was. There are also those really seedy services that make debt ‘disappear’ who basically try to do what I mentioned prior. Seems up Chris’ alley since he has taken out payday loans and prefers an easy out.

Chris is gonna become the next Norman Bates and just become Barb as he keeps her skeletal remains in the easy chair in the living room.

Barb 's debt dies with her, why throw even pennies on the dollar at it from death's door?

To answer your question though: there's not really any specific amount of time, but yes you can usually settle a debt for a substantially lower amount as the debt collection agency likely bought it dirt cheap(~10 cents on the dollar) from the creditor.

The debt dies with her, but her estate can (and will) be liable for paying out creditors. Chris will get whatever is left after creditors are paid up.

This scenario likely results in Chris being forced to sell the house.

Barb's debt ain't going anywhere if she got Chris to co-sign on loans with her, which she has because her credit is more dogshit than his
And marvin has said she's borrowed against his insurance, so he doesn't even have that
