It's easy to be open minded and optimistic about other people when things are going great but when shit starts going south is when people need to be more realistic
I used to think Swedes (and their cousins in the upper midwest) were just yuge fagggots. Then I realized, they just had a safe, high-trust society full of polite Germanics who enjoyed helping each other and couldn't imagine anyone intentionally being a burden on their neighbours, for so long that they thought everyone else must be the same.

So they had no natural immunity when the Barbara Lerner Spectre types showed up with gorillions of africans/muslims, and suddenly you have 10 year olds being gang raped and grenade fights on the streets of Malmo (or Minneapolis).

It was incremental really, like most things.

As a kid there were certain things I picked up on quite early on which I think shaped things. The spoiled, coddled children in class were always the worst behaved, not everyone is equal, a lot of times there weren't any consequences for genuine failure depending on who you were, just consequences for annoying authority.

As I got older watching society bend and warp to accommodate the whims of the first group I noticed and their completely warped world view was quite disillusioning. At first I would try and debate or approach these people the on grounds of 'how would it feel if the situation was reversed' but as I've experienced more of it - these people are just manipulative narcissists. That's it. They just want power, to impose their bullshit and never to be told no, and for many they never have been. They've made it to their 30's without any consequences and are now screeching loudly and throwing an ongoing tantrum at the first push-back they've likely ever received. It's hard to respect or even see people who behave like that as equals or even people whose opinions should be listened to.

In addition to that watching both sides of the political centre decide entirely independently and not at in a coordinated fashion that every developed country needs infinite third worlders to prop up asset prices, depress wages and create a captive voting base in attempt to lord over the ashes forever was a big one. I've mentioned it before, but its hard to take the bullshit claims of 'skills shortages' and that we need these people when almost every single driver you encounter is a barely verbal jeet who doesn't understand directions, and the fast food you use to eat is now worse as its made by people who don't grasp the concept of food safety, orders or even time, and your foreign coworkers are mostly a fucking nightmare to deal with. I never used to be racist. Can't say that now.

March 15 was another big shove away from the left and centre as Horseface decided to shut out parts of the internet (including this place) in order to stop talk about the mosque shootings. We weren't allowed to discuss it or ask why.

Covid was the other major catalyst. Watching many of my countrymen behave like complete fucking cattle all the while our sociopath leaders pushed bullshit, fear and hysteria. They still do it to this day. I still see people wearing masks in public and I'm sure they're confused when I treat them like the utter retards that they are if I'm forced to interact with them.

Covid crystallised a lot of what I'd previously observed and brought it all into focus.

These days I'm instinctively disgusted by anyone insisting people be kind, or that we should blindly trust our leaders and media as a source of truth.

Ultimately I saw behind the curtain and was disgusted by what I saw. I assume anyone in any mainstream capacity (i.e. the entire left and the establishment as a whole) should be disregarded, shunned and pushed to the fringes. Mainstream society is mostly a complete write-off to me.

I've hated the Republican Party since the Patriot Act response to 9/11, and I've hated the Democrat Party long before that.

I dabbled in libertarian ideology for awhile until I realized that being a libertarian is like being a little bit pregnant. You either believe government power will always end up being abused, or you don't. Since power corrupts, it only makes sense that no government can avoid getting bigger and worse as time goes on.

So now I'd consider myself mostly an anarchist, since it seems to be the only way to limit the accumulation of power. And the accumulation of power by unscrupulous people is the root of the problem. If nobody has a mandate on power, then the damage that can be inflicted by bad actors will be more limited.

And ultimately, I can't think of a moral reason that another person should have power or control over me. That's the crux of freedom.

I used to be pretty pro-USA and pro left before 2014 since the USA used to be a much better place in spite of GW Bush being so insane that it would make Democrats look good. And then they unleashed Occupy Central into Hong Kong (which I live in, and yes, this was a traumatizing period), I look at what happened, found out it's the exact Neocon scam that happened in Ukraine. Got into a couple Christian Far-Right conspiracy sites as the entire Internet turned from an open community into some sort of ideological dystopia where you are forced to tread on eggshells and the entire gaming industry being invaded by prudes that even Japanese companies have to censor themselves, so naturally I became more or less alt-right-ish, didn't suspect Christianity, and went against Judaism, Islam, Communism and Wokeism.

And then Covid Struck, and I knew we're not going back. People acting like cattle and there's nothing you can do to convince them other than to become the exact same thing as them. World leaders going in full lockstep to move the goalposts and probably instigate a mass extinction event (and I didn't mean vaccines either; I meant they are legitimately planning to cull around 75% of the global population through lockdowns and suicides before they are taken down) in the case where they go totally unopposed. And people just becoming more "woke" and prudish than they were before 2016 especially on the Internet. Something was clearly wrong.

After Covid I compared the Covid "scamdemic" and the wokeness ideology that is threatening to create an extinction event across the world right NOW with Christianity (especially Medieval Christianity). Actually reading the Bible and Medieval History without taking it at face value and comparing it with what is happening now is pretty enlightening because you'll find out exactly what went wrong. They (Christianity, Marxism, the Woke Agenda, Covid "Scamdemic" etc.) are all exactly the same thing and you're straight-up being lied to for 2,000 years by Jewish vagrants and sociopaths calling themselves "holy men" and portraying themselves as heroes and messiahs. Globalhomo has pretty much indoctrinated people to stop being human and become unthinking sheep in front of their authority and laws for that amount of time, they've regressed all of Europe back to the Neolithic era for 1,000 years, and they are planning to repeat it worldwide in the near-future.

Also you know what? Back in Covid I also studied more of the Khmer Rouge and the Cambodian Genocide, it was legitimately scary stuff that happened within 4 years. The desolation Pol Pot left was so bad that Cambodia is now objectively worse to live in compared to the nearby Thailand or Malaysia. And this was with foreign aid from places like Vietnam, Thailand and Japan, by the way. Imagine if the Pol Pot sort of desolation was international. Then I realized it. Cambodia was the testing ground. The entire world will suffer from the exact same sort of ultra-monstrosity, if not magnitudes worse. If it's not from the mass deaths caused by covid lockdowns and NFT economies, it will be from the tried-and-true old methods that always work.

(The next time you wonder why people fall for crazy cults made by creeps calling themselves "9-million year old immortals" or the "second coming of Christ", remember that the Holy Roman Empire employed more or less the same brainwashing techniques as those cults on a much larger scale until the entire European population is made docile and brainwashed.)

At that point I decided that this is no longer about the Left or Right, East or West. This is an upcoming, full-blown extinction event where they will be using "love and tolerance" as a premise to cull 75% of the entire global population and leave the survivors so irreversibly traumatized that they will spend the rest of their lives being literal savages fighting and killing each other. And the beginning (catalyst) of the end is around the corner.

I went from being a capitalist to a distributist as I kept Noticing examples of unmitigated corporate greed screwing over (relatively) innocent people, as well as incompetence and malice from the Feds. If you don't know what that is, it's a political theory of Roman Catholic origin according to which private property should be widely owned instead of concentrated; our economy should be driven by small businesses and worker-owned cooperatives only where small businesses are insufficient. Distributism upholds the principle of subsidiarity: every function within the state should be fulfilled by the smallest, most local unit capable of doing so. As I see it, Distributism provides an answer for maybe half of America's problems.

I never shifted much culturally, although my experience in a jail ministry as well as embarrassing statistics of the USA's incarceration and recidivism rates has made me desire more rehabilitative justice in our prisons. Not to mention cases where the process is the punishment for crimes of which the inmate isn't even guilty. Criminal justice needs reform.

Having kids. I have five kids and I'm working on more. After having my first, my politics have changed from "the government is satan so let's go full accelerationist until the pain of inaction exceeds the pain of action so we can drag these people out into the streets and flay them alive, regardless of the human cost" to " the government is satan but let's not do anything too drastic until my kids and grandkids and great-grandkids are all grown up and able to survive without me."

Having kids changes everything about the way you see the world. I still want all these people flayed alive, salted, and debrided on live TV. But my preferred way of reaching that is very different now. It's why I support all the enemies of the tyrants who rule over my civilization.

I'm opposite. In the middle but madness on the right has pushed me more left, although I also haven't really moved.

It's just a turn off.
Its sort of the same. Originally "far left" though not really. More anarchist in the 90s and 2000s- things like: Reject communism, reject authoritarian communists, lets all work together without the government, help eachother out, "punk rock and DIY + anti-corporate".

I think the big sin there was that I was willing to chill with communists, but as many in the thread have talked about- commies just got (or maybe were always) more and more authoritarian overall, prone to infighting over stupid issues, had major problems with making stuff up and gossipy things, etc.

Occupy was a big eye opener for me for the libertarian left. I can remember going to #Occupy, and it was one of the dumbest things ever. Everyone was a shitlib, everyone was a college student with an iphone, and none of what people were doing made any sense. This is coming from a dude who came from a more working class background who (Id argue for myself) understands people better than most-

but the people at occupy literally had a "Free stuff store" with free t-shirts, free cd's, etc.

You can guess what happened. They thought that, "according to theory" people would just take what they need, in abundance theres no need for greed or whatever, right? Money is the root of evil afterall? Yeah, that free stuff store got looted, grabbed five nirvana cds and they started panicking, creating limits, one per person (but what if we need more than one shirt?), started creating vouchers- etc.

It was like, congratulations, you just recreated supply and demand controls and elements of the free market.

People there literally voted on whether they should be democratic (most redundant shit ever)

Was still generally very leftist regardless (see anarchist or libertarian left) and more of a live and let live type person- I'll volunteer in my community, feed the homeless at a soup kitchen, try to help out- these retards can larp if they want;

but gradually they infiltrated things more and more. You hear about stuff like this with troons infiltrating rape centers and demanding to be let in, and if not closing them down- but have you heard about leftists overall infiltrating initiatives like soup kitchens, volunteer homeless shelters, etc- and booting out people for wrongthink? That happens as well.

"You posted something I dislike to instagram, so you can't feed the homeless anymore with us, even though you have for years"

retarded stuff like that.

This was maybe from 2016 onwards till covid, but at covid- clown world just went full swing. People started screaming about abolishing the police (which is horrid for the actual poor), de-policing sex offenders because theyre trans, constant struggle sessions everywhere, etc, and this was the ultimate turn off for me on the left.

I'm sure that this is a similar story to most on here, but where I differ is I'm starting to see similar things on the right as well.

Talked with my wife recently about how much of a turn off the alt-right, new right, groypers, woke-right or whatever is now- and its paralleling the left in 2016 once more.

Its constant racist stuff, le based giga chad, and then horny posting.

You know the way the right wing shitlords will pick some random teenaged girl on twitter to obsess over and sexualize? (like that Italian one before and this Khazak girl currently).

I have to ask myself- how are horny right wing chuds any different from the Indians they constantly screetch about online?

Whenever I see right wing circles, it constantly devolves into shitflinging, shitty memes, and politicizing everything and I just want to enjoy a video game without "omg wokeshit, commie bullshit, fake, theyre ruining this game series with A SINGLE BLACK CHARACTER, why are the women so unattractive".

I'm being pushed back into the center because of the way right wingers co-opted christian aesthetics in the deus veult crowd, are just as greedy for power in their own small communities (or theyre trying to pimp out engagement on twitter and youtube) and generally theyre just the same as their left wing counter-parts, just an inverse.

The internet is getting more boring because of that, unironically.

People demonstrating they use free will to be selfish, avoidant, or manipulative a lot of the time. They flee responsibility instead of take it. They dump on others or act like leeches.

People proving that most need a little management and as you shrink down, more and more management, was the hardest thing for me to learn. But it’s true.

Went from being a self-styled Occupy/Bernie bro to a social conservative, mostly because of LGBTQ shit and COVID (I really hate acronyms). Nowadays I’m much less strident about particular policies, especially economics, because I feel like I genuinely don’t know what’s best. And I think that how well a society functions depends on more than just picking the right set of policies as though you’re playing SimCity.

Nowadays I mostly just try to avoid reflexively adopting positions because people I otherwise agree with believe in them.

I used to be more right wing economically, but then I got a full time job, moved out, experienced what American healthcare is like once you're paying for it yourself (even when you're supposedly one of the lucky ones with health insurance from your work) and rapidly shifted left on economics.
To be fair American Healthcare isn't the bastion of right wing economics. Its an unholy union of state and corporations feeding off of each other.
