I think it comes from two major things, one we all share a sense of humor that has a lot of darkness and shock value, so we have something even if strange to bond on and second, we all do what we can to not be ourselves online, this isn't FB where the avg person is trying to impress someone they got bullied by in 4th grade, or make mommy send likes.

I want to see people do well and that makes me a raging faggot.
The nature of this place helps to drop pretenses unlike places filled with ego flexing bullshit like you'll see on bodybuilding.com or /fit/. What keeps me here is honestly the people, because you'll always know what is said here has no filter and is raw opinion or fact (or trolling or flat out retarded, depending on the thread).

Some of the most friendly and good people I've met are at the gym, because they love seeing other people better themselves as much as achieving their own goals.
 
Gyms are a mixed bag and I won't knock any of em (tbh I think planet fat... fitness doing the free highschool thing is SO good, I legit love it) but some are more social than others.

Few years ago I was using a YMCA (local one is amazing rock wall brand name machines 3 pools it's a fucking spa) and met some incredible people, we all were different ages and just clicked for coffee (free too) after we lifted.

But I've also met some major retards, the funniest story was I was once winding down at a gym LA fitness, decent chain but was close to my apartment at the time. Treadmilling and the old people LOVED to chat and flat out bully you on retarded politics... Did you know? Obama care was banned by... Ronald Regan?

Thinking of gym stuff I remember I was just re getting into lifting off an injury I looked decent but I had a single plate squat and it was not pretty and didn't get a lot in. I felt super lame and it was only my ego. High schooler (had the local track team shirt on) asked if I was ok and needed a spot. What a cool thing for a what 16 year old to do, just check someone and be positive.

Lifting is a great culture over all but people over do it and like anything it's got bad sides but we ...lift ourselves above that.

I wonder if this is a problem in the US only. (About zoomers) I've never seen any one under the age of 25 training at any gym I've attended.

Everyone sticks to themselves besides the friendly "are you using this?".

There's a handful of zoomers now that it's summer, and I will be soon launching a holy crusade to take the fucking benches back, but aside from the TikTok kids most people growing up these days do not exercise at all.
I'd say look at the stats, but just look outside and see these blobs rolling around. America is so unhealthy, and that unhealthiness is promoted by everything around us at all times.
 
I guess I do have a question about general gym etiquette.

Recently I have been training at similar times as a guy, he introduced himself and I have spotted him a few times.

He made a comment on my squat form and why my knees turn inwards sometimes (collapsed arches though it's something I'm aware of and trying to correct).

But he has graduated to asking nit/picking about my form on everything, I know he is just trying to help me correct my form, but it just come across as annoying and "mansplainy". I am by no means a pro but I am very aware of my form issues but none of them are fixable in a day.

I am really not sure if I am being a sensitive bitch about this, I kind of just say, "oh, thank you for pointing that out" and move on with my work out and silently seethe, lol.

Is it considered rude to comment on someone's form constantly? My form is not THAT bad, I train with a friend sometimes and they are just small issues I need to fix, it's nothing that is going to cause me to hurt myself.

I tore the artery in the left side of my neck last year which caused a stroke so I have a discrepancy in control and mass in my left side, it's getting better but I obviously do not want to announce that at the gym to some dude.

I know I'm never going to get very strong since that's just the reality of my body, but I figured I should add some weight training into my exercise routine to make it a bit more rounded. Last time I got really into fitness I hardly did any lifting, and I regret it looking back.

As for gym stories, once I was running on the treadmill watching Ghostbusters Two on the gym TV when an old guy came in and told the girl at the desk to switch it over to CNN. Every time he came in, he would always make them switch the televisions to CNN. Watching sports? Fuck you, you're watching CNN now! Watching whatever crappy sitcom they've got playing at the gym? CNN MOTHERFUCKER!

Last time I got really into fitness I hardly did any lifting, and I regret it looking back.
I'm 5'4, 58kg and have gotten into lifting in the last 2 years. What are your goals? Is there a certain area you are hoping to work on?

Take a weight you can do for 8-16 reps before you can’t lift it anymore with good form, and do a mix of compounds like Bench, squats, pulldowns, dips, deadlifts, etc, and isolation movements like curls and extensions and raises. Almost everything is the same between genders, just that women move less weight and can stand more volume because of it, and tend to focus on developing different body parts than men like to focus on.
 
Greater strength in the arms. I don't need to be super ripped, but I'd like to get a bit of tone and enough muscle to make physical work easier.
My arm days are bar curls, incline db curls, tricep pull downs and tricep extentions. Probably some back exercises would be good too for physical work.

I’m getting really bad golfer’s elbow every time I do curls and can’t figure out what’s going on. I don’t think I’m overtraining and I’ve been told my form is good. Is there some accessory muscle I need to be building up or something? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I only seem to get it from free weights, no problem when I use cables, etc.

(I may have actually posted this question before, this has been going on for a while)

Sucks when people don't get the hint. If you don't already dress this way, have you tried uglying yourself up a bit? I always go to the gym in a loose but breathable pair of sweatpants (with a tight enough waistband I don't risk them falling down), an oversized ratty old t-shirt, and either keep my hair cut short or covered with a plain headscarf, and it's worked to keep attention off me so far.

You may already dress this way (or be unable to dress that way due to the type of exercises you do) and with someone who is really determined they won't be deterred, but it can help mitigate that sort of thing a bit.

I do not even brush my hair before training, I just wear it in the most fucked up pony tail you have ever seen, no make up so you can see the 3 layers of dark circles on my ender eyes. Either wear a baggy tshirt + leggings or tight shirt + track pants depending on the work out day needs. I'm pretty standoffish and have worked on my RBF through out the years, I was pretty rude to this guy the first time he talked to me so, no idea.

@timewave0 I love your avatar, but are you getting it on both sides? On a % rate, give me how much you're doing? Or easier to state, whats your curl program look like? When it comes to muscles esp like curls I highly suggest free over machines, so with no disrespect, I'll assume your form is ok. But it's strange whats up, do you have any (aisde arms) injuries?

For some reason I can only assume to be magic, cables and bands are great if you have joint or tendon issues.
Depending on how you trained your arms, you could have been going to heavy on the isolation movements. I generally don't think that going heavy on arms is helpful, because they handle heavy load during chest and back movements as is, and more just increases risk of injury. If that's the case, then lighter weight, higher reps, pump-style training can help. I'm talking like 15-25 reps, they burn like hell but get you super juicy pumps if done properly. Slightly off topic, but my arms immediately felt better and started to steadily improve again when I went lighter but had much more volume per session, so that might be worth a shot if approached carefully.
If it's from improperly warming up, then try working whatever takes longer to warm up last, so if your triceps take forever to get warm hit biceps first, then you'll find it much easier to warm up your triceps. And vice versa. This can make it easier on the tendons, because everything is nice and ready to work properly.
You could also try high rep and light weight work for forearms, just wrist curls and reverse wrist curls can help even out strength and promote blood flow to the target area, and it's good practice anyways.
Besides that, if cables don't hurt you than use cables until you've resolved the issue, because cables are great for resistance training anyways.

I'd really like to have my own gym some day. If anything, these last few couple weeks I wanted to start supersetting pull-ups with presses (so as to cut down on my training time for a bit) but a couple jabronis were hogging the machine, doing triceps pull-downs:

It kinda bothers me to have people near me when I am exercising so I waited for a while, but the gym was closing shortly. If I go earlier, the gym is jam-packed with jabronis, and a simple 45 minute routine can extend to over 90 minutes, which already annoys me to no end.

And when it's not the jabronis, it's the gym bunnies doing half-reps at the squat rack, making sure they're pushing out their ass as much as they can.

What do?! 😩

I will not spot for people, and I will never ask someone to spot me ever again. I use to ask others, until it went bad.. I made that mistake and it's just not worth putting yourself into the hands of somebody else as they can fuck you up badly.

In my example, I asked a regular for a spot when going for a new 1rm on benchpress, and I told him what I wanted - don't touch the bar, if I need help, I will tell you when to take it.. and you know what happened? When I failed the 1rm, and asked him to take it, he decided he would coach me through it and started yelling CMON! CMON! He fucking left me hanging and I ended up straining a pec (nothing serious, was fine after a week). I asked him why he did that and he said he thought I could do it, but as lifters we all know when we can maybe get a lift grinding it out and when it is a complete failure (I'm not afraid or embarassed to fail a lift, it's part of the process). I was so fucking angry that someone left me hanging like that but ultimately it was my own fault for trusting someone despite clearly explaining what I wanted. My recommendation to you is the same, and squat in the cage instead if you think you might be at risk of failing as you can bail on the lift easy.

As for things now being awkard with someone nitpicking everything, I would just avoid that person as it's clearly already putting you into a negative frame of mind and you just don't need that shit in your head while at the gym. Just say hi, and move on doing your own thing, the guy will hopefully get the point. If he doesn't get the point, go and speak to management and they will have a quiet word to him, you might get a reputation from some guys as 'that bitch' but other sensible people (like me lol) realise some women (and men) are there to just do their thing, get in and out without drama or picking up.

And yeah, I think it's very rude to persistantly comment on someones bad form, there has only been one time in 7-8 years of lifting that I went up to someone and said look I hate to be rude but you are going to hurt your back if you keep curving your back like that when deadlifting, and I did it graciously and never mentioned it again, I usually mind my own business but in that case I felt obligated to say something as they looked newish and I would've hated for them to hurt themselves if by just mentioning to them in good faith that they might hurt themselves.

Like someone in the comments section has said, even if he is on gear (he probably is), one thing no one can deny is his consistency and dedication through the years and that should really be the take away from Mike.

We 30+ dudes still have some good 10-12 good years of puppy dog energy left, we're still in our prime so keep at it.

Ouch... that sucks!

This is a massive problem with jabronis, they just don't know how to spot either, but then you realize - no one really teaches you how to spot. I'll leave it to Rip to explain:


I've only had to spot one other dude just twice.
