I was reading a short story earlier (Heart of Rage) and it included something I don't think I've ever seen before, a loyalist psyker adept of the Mechanicus. I know the Dark Mechanicum has psyker tech priests due to warp related shenanigans, but I can't think of any other loyalist examples. I think the closest would be something like Grey Knight Techmarines. Do any of you guys know of examples of psykers in the AdMech?*
*Note I'm specifically talking about actual members of the Cult Mechanicus, not just psykers they work with like astropaths or something like the unfortunates they stick in psi-titans to act like a battery
I believe the Admech doesn't employ many psykers for... Reasons. Likely gameplay balance, as I recall combining the two classes was super-OP in the few pnp games where you could do just that.
Recently impulse purchased the emperor's children combat patrol. Really nice sculpts. Was looking for any tips when it comes to painting/hobbying them. Also would it be prudent to see if I can find the launch box for them for expanding or would it be better just to buy the individual units?
Add Fulgrim battleforce and the battleforce with the demon prince. Thats max Noise Marines (18), decent amount of Flawless Blades (12) and Battleline (30). You'll need to get 3x Kakophonists, 3x Rhinos and Lucius individually since theyre not in combo boxes. For collection purposes, I'd suggest another Combat Patrol. It really maxes you out on EC with 40 battleline (2x10 of each) and max Flawless Blades (18). Youll need some Lord Exultants and 2 is probably the sweet spot.
Demons is a meta and personal taste option. Im not the biggest fan of demons but thats because the Slaanesh models arent great. Daemonettes, Seekers and Fiends are old/not great sculpts with limited play. Shalaxi and KoS overpriced but sick looking models. 3x Defiler and Winged Demon Prince are super meta and expensive. Maulerfiends are pretty cool and useful, 1 for your list but 2 for your collection. Heldrakes are cool but not great, everyone needs 1 with the DPS flame base.
On top of not worrying about the smaller demons, dont bother with Sorcerers or Terminators. Sorcerers are a bad generic sculpt and rules are meh, if you want to run one you should proxy the Dark Elf Sorceress, Shardspeaker or Fateweaver. Terminators are generic CSM models, eh rules and theres hopium we might get a unique Terminator at some point but not before Sonic Dreads.
Also good luck painting it. There is a LOT of detail to go with chaos trim. Besides your primary and trim colour, there is also red leather, brown leather, flesh, flayed flesh, demonic flesh, drugs, guns, plasma, tassles, sonic effects, carapace joints as well as generic bronze and steel metallics. You need a few different washes and if you highlight or layer up, more paints. I've managed Lucius, 12 Flawless, 20 Infractors and 3 Kakophonists this calendar year (with a job and toddler) Im hoping to get 20 Tormentors and 18 Noise Marines by Christmas but not hopeful. I also have a Heldrake, 2 Maulerfiends and a triple Rhino project (big plans) to distract me.
Have a nearly complete model im currently working on to see. Keep in mind, I dont really believe in highlights or going beyond a shade for chaos models, there is so much detail to break up the colours.
I kind of wish the Severan Dominate got more going for it after Only War. A non-chaos corrupted, non-Imperium, barely xenos affiliated (not anymore after the Orks came over and their Dark Eldar "friends" abandoned them) human faction that survives through diplomacy, careful positioning, and sheer fucking luck? Man that would be fun to explore.

Only thing Psyker related that they use that aren't essential like navagators is that one Stratagem "Steel Mind, Iron Logic" for Graia, even then it's just mentally mogging Pskyers. I believe anyone who manifests psychic powers in Admech territory is sent straight to the black ships. Although Cawl Inferior uses the heads of psykers in jars for long distance communication. I do remember reading that there are some cases of lobotomized psykers in use for specialized tasks...
Like you said, it could be for gameplay balance but: >Warhammer
>Balanced
Not likely, probably something related to their designs and Psyker standing out poorly with people as close to machines as a human can get, probably why it's written down somewhere that augments can dim a person's soul (forgot where that was written).
Here's a treat of all of Caven Scott's stories reviewed before I finally finish the kids series.
Doom Flight (short)
It's mostly bolter porn, but it was my first exposure to the SM's that love Top Gun fighting in the air and dooming. Not too much lore, the mission is FUBAR, The odds of survival for the Doom Eagles are nonexistent, just take out as many of these ork bastards out as you can. good stuff.
Flayed (short)
Follows a couple civilians on a world that regularly gets pillaged by flayed Necrons before they run into the SM death Specters. I really love that the ending would be horrifying by modern standards, but by 40k the MC has basically won the lottery. Sorry your family and world is dead but hey your never gonna want for anything ever again. (unless there's some secret 40k reason why a SM
breeding center
would suck any more then usual. )
Trophies (short)
I like the idea that making an entire alien race go extinct is considered a holy quest by SM's. A Death Specter goes down to some shithole to make sure a non sentient race of monsters gets wiped out. It doesn't quite go too well for him and I like that its because A: he was dumb enough to take off his helmet and B: Waste a bolter shot on an annoyingly helpful old man. Monster kinda reminds me of the leaper from dead space.
Hidden Treasures (Short)
This one doesn't have much context and I kinda like that. It's sort of a warhammer kids story? Two bro's find a room in a hive city that spits out random amounts of SM treasure. Both Traitor and loyalist. One bro seemingly gets corrupted and other kinda just goes along with it before two SM show up out of the portal and fight. There is no obvious explanation and I wasn't even sure what company the dudes belonged to. It was neat.
Plague Harvest (novella)
The first of a three part SM battle series. This was shockingly good, Caven was looking at Peter Fehervari's work and taking some serious notes. Basically this is a slow burn horror ride where Doom eagles space marines and one lone Ultrasmurf librarian have to hold out against the forces of nurgle. The Librarian has been posted on this agri world for the better part of 200 years to keep watch over its secrets
It's almost the same shit as Reverie, a tear in the warp that has a much worse risk of becoming another eye of terror. The major difference though is that the eldar used wrathbone to hold this shit back.
but retirement has seriously dulled his edge. When shit goes south he doesn't see it coming or make enough preparations. It's bad enough that the Doom Eagle leader seriously considers the idea that Nurgle subconsciously mislead him into thinking everything was fine. Speaking of, the doomies shine pretty bright in this. Between the two stories Caven's done, I get the impression these guys are the most fatalistic redshirt SM's in the setting, but damit they are gonna die taking a shit ton of bad guys with them. The horror stuff with the Planet's civilian population and surfs was extremely well done and pretty sad. Nurgle arguably is the worst chaos faction to fight considering how much he pretends to be the emperor and slowly corrupts decent people. There's really no effective defense against his plagues for the average joe and nothing short of total body destruction or a headshot will break his forces.
Logan Grimnar: Defender of Honor (short)
Logan goes out to hunt with a space wolf that indulged in some stolen valor while fighting orks and punishes him. It's alright. Apparently giant trolls exist on the Space wolf homeworld.
Death Masks (short that felt like a novella)
I liked walking in blind without reading the description for this. There's a hive world that's got some shady shit going down on one of the cities so the imperial guard blockade it and kill everything that comes out. Then a Eversor Assassin drops down to kick some ass. He doesn't have much characterization and he doesn't need it, he's there to kill the shit out of everything in his way doom-guy style and it works pretty well. At the same time though, I did like that it was clear he had limits to his abilities and could be taken out with clever positioning. The big twist in this is
Its not a blockcade of nurgle, its regular human's that ingested ork spores and think they are orks. They almost act like a gene stealer cult in a way. It was neat, and they have a whole little subculture worshiping the ork gods. Interestingly the Assassin isnt there for them.
The fact that people can read a warhammer novel that shows a murderer rapist getting turned into a servitor and think "That's not ok" shows that empathy can be a suicidal emotional response.

The fact that some people can read a Warhammer novel where the state, for all it’s flaws, which are many, still puts its own people first and has carved out a galaxy for mankind, as a bad thing shows that the majority of the species is beyond saving.
The Imperium is a dream. To manifest destiny, take the universe and remake it into a better form.

"Get a load of these chuds that think they would be space marines if they were in the 40k universe, don't they know that The Imperium is heckin' bad? Anyway, if I was in the 40k universe I would be a badass Chaos Warband leader that liberates people from the tyranny of The Imperium and would even be accepting of Xenos."

Some more minis painted. Gonna use the Sigmar goblin as the standin runtherd for my Armageddon Gretchins. I freehanded the triple triangle on the squigasaurs pauldron thing. I'll send a better photo after they've dried

Hobby update. This is 10 Infractors done, another 10 also completed but you get the point.
Only highlighting went on the gun to break it up a bit and tbh, i might go back and redo them to not be highlighted but broken up into proper segments.
Something I've noticed with the infractor kit is that if you want to build it as two squads of 5 you can't have both the icon of excess and the sergeants fent juice vials. Is it a big deal if I don't have the icons?
