It's going to be a film based on a video game so one can bet on it being total shit. I really like the Warcraft lore despite its glaring inconsistencies and played the fuck out of WC 1-3, but I'm not going to pay to see this film, just like I didn't go see the Hobbit films. I mean, fuck, they even market it as "Warcraft: The beginning" so they already assume that there will be sequels and quite possibly another horrifying, redundant "expanded universe". They're not getting my money, the cunts.

I didn't go to see the Hobbit films either, because it was just so obviously wrong to turn a short, light-hearted novel into a three movie epic.

At least they didn't have Uwe Boll make it. I suppose.

There is a deeper problem I have with this and it's the preposterous unoriginality. The Hobbit films were clearly designed to give people more of Lord of the Rings, a franchise that had been around for about a decade and had firmly entrenched itself in pop culture. That meant that new LoTR films would basically sell themselves, not unlike new Star Wars or superhero flicks. The Warcraft movie and its possible sequels are meant to follow that pattern, that is, tapping into an established franchise that will make decent profit by pandering to numerous fans who will be more tolerant of a film's faults as long as they can see their favourite characters doing EPIC! stuff on the big screen.

I'm really hoping that one day this entire franchise bullshit crashes and burns. But who am I fooling?

It looks like another generic fantasy movie that bites off more than it can chew regarding lore to me.

Looks like a terrible fantasy flick, and I've got a soft spot for that sorta shit. I'll probably just torrent a camrip, maybe pick up the blu-ray when it's on sale if it's entertainingly shit.

Isn't it breaking box offices in all the countries it's opened up in?

It's #1 in a lot of countries right now. #2 in some others. The reviews are, apparently, really good from people who've actually watched it, rather than "critics".

Like I said, it's better than how most people here think it will be

Think about it like this. Blizzard directly handled this movie. Critics in America are complaining about racism and brown orcs.

When they're in the game and they're just uncorrupted Orcs. Social Justice Warriors are so far gone now that internet dragons and races are racist. Kind of intriguing, really.

What intrigues me the most is the fact that the guy who plays Ragnar Lothbrok from History Channel's Vikings is also playing one of the main characters in Warcraft. I fucking love that show!

Probably won't be seeing this film in theaters though.

I'm honestly pretty sad that Duncan Jones, the guy who made movies I really liked like Moon and Source Code chose to spend five years making one bad big budget movie instead of a bunch of cool smaller-budgeted movies.

Now, my judgement isnt based on much.
But i dont think the movie isnt as bad as 17% on rt
It didnt look good, but it didnt look like 'my soul was dragged through hell'
More like 'meh who cares crap movie'.

And maybe its just me, but ratings for modern movies seem to be more 'best movie ever' and 'worst movie ever', no middle ground anymore

Saw it today. It's not as bad as the critics say. Sure its not great, but it's the best video game movie I've seen in a long time. Then again I'm a fucking nerd who used to play Warcraft and world of Warcraft so I know the material. Here's to hoping its a financial success and gets a sequel...or I could play the old RTS games which are pretty good.

This reminds me of this comic about J.R.R. Tolkien

Coming from someone who has never played any of the warcraft games, it was a decent popcorn flick. There were clearly lots of references that went over my head, but there was enough explained that I could still follow along which was appreciated. I could tell that this was based off the rts games and not WoW judging by how the hoard was not established in Azeroth yet. This movie gave more development towards the hoard then the alliance. All I know about the alliance is they distrust each other and I can rely on the standard fantasy tropes.

This is a video game movie that doesn't suck and worth seeing even if you are not a fan of the franchise but are a fan of the fantasy genre. The visuals are impressive although the characters are rather bland but not intolerable. They are just there to fill a role to move the story along. I would like to know more about the orc chick and what her story is, but hopefully it will be explained in the sequel.

Again, if you have never played any of the games expect to probably miss a lot but you can always fall back on the wiki to explain it. But don't let it slip or you'll probably be bored to tears as you have a fanboy explain the lore in painful detail for the next several hours.

It was okay, and that's about it. Otherwise I'd say it was a poorly-directed mess where they failed to extrapolate on much of their content by attempting to squeeze too much in there. Medivh's corruption was basically a footnote that received no good explanation, and the human side was woefully underdeveloped (not to mention the main character couldn't do the role for shit - there could not have been a more robotic exchange between him and his son when it needed to count).

In retrospect, they should have not worried about pandering to the "different shades of grey" ideology they plant throughout WoW lore and did what made the first couple of Warcraft games and any good war movie a success - demonised the Horde. That way you waste a lot less time trying to explore two sides and instead round out one of them the way they were meant to be treated. Then you can go into the "they're not really all that bad" schtick in the next movie following the resounding success of the original.

China was pretty much what saved this movie. I heard it fared terribly in the US.
