So, I take it most of us has seen the trailers for the World of Warcraft movie coming out his June.

Those who are WoW enthusiasts (or those into the fantasy genre), what is your take on it?

They should really make a TV show based around Warcraft instead. Put it on HBO. And make it a comedy.

I thought this was about Warcraft the RTS not WoW the MMO
That is correct. It is more or less retconning the non-existant plot of the first Warcraft and will feature the important characters from the RTS. I am cautiously optimistic because if they were in it for a massive money grab, that time has long since passed as WoW's fanbase has decreased dramatically since the announcement in 2008. Taking 8 years to get to production I hope means they did some careful consideration and scrapped at least 12 shitty plots to get to the one they finally settled on.

Judging by the trailer, it looks like it has the story that the original Warcraft deserved, as the first game was primarily about defeating the orcs and paints the orcs as entirely evil. The trailer shows and the directors announced that it will share both sides, as the orcs were never inherently evil until one clan decided to conspire with demons. That being said, I think it will meet my expectations.

To be honest the Warcraft series has never been big on story. And I say this as a guy who is a fan of the series. The story is very derivative and told very tongue in cheek. People have made comparisons to the plot of Warcraft 3 with the plot of the Star Wars prequels.

Having a film based on the franchise is entirely built around how much brand recognition World of Warcraft has and how popular Lord of the Rings is.

I only played WoW pre-Cata on a well-known shitty private server (which should have its own thread given the drama that went down in that fucking place oh man I could tell you horror stories); that being said I basically devoured every shred of Warcraft lore I could get my hands on via wikis and shit because I thought the world was pretty cool.

But I'm personally not interested in Warcraft because I never liked any of the lore surrounding the humans except re: The Fall of Lordaeron and Arthas and all of that. You could argue that's bad storytelling on the part of Blizzard, though, they do seem to love the Horde as do I and dedicate a lot more to developing them than the Alliance side.

And that not-CGI orc chick looks dumb as hell.

She's an Orc? I thought she was supposed to be a Troll. Somehow I'm even MORE bothered by that thought.

I grew up playing Warcraft 1 and 2, so this is pretty nostalgic for me. I played some WoW, but I didn't pay too much attention to the story.

I'm going to go with Troll, actually. They showed several shots of female Orcs and they look like proper Orcs.

Still looks pretty awful for a female Troll. She mostly looks like a cheap ripoff of Zoe Saldana's character from Guardians of the Galaxy mixed with...who was that half-Troll from Ryan Sohmer's Looking For Group webcomic? Benny? Something like that.

Wasn't Warcraft's origin story that Blizzard wanted to make a RTS version of Warhammer Fantasy but couldn't get a proper license from Games Workshop?

Yeah, I forget where things fell apart but as far as I've heard at some point it was intended to be the licensed Warhammer computer game.

It's going to be a film based on a video game so one can bet on it being total shit. I really like the Warcraft lore despite its glaring inconsistencies and played the fuck out of WC 1-3, but I'm not going to pay to see this film, just like I didn't go see the Hobbit films. I mean, fuck, they even market it as "Warcraft: The beginning" so they already assume that there will be sequels and quite possibly another horrifying, redundant "expanded universe". They're not getting my money, the cunts.
