Thoughts on Etrian Odyssey?

Been playing 1 and 3 on a modded DSi XL; and man what great DRPG's. Saw all 3 games also got rereleased on Steam, might cop.
EO's great. The 3DS remakes have stuff the Steam versions didn't get, basically an enhanced story mode where you get shit like a main character that has a EO2 class in EO1. But those don't really matter.

The series kept up it's quality all the way to the end, and IIRC the final one is a greatest hits of everything from the previous games done right.

Also, FOE.

I've heard the mapping is a bit of a chore since you lose the second screen functionality; I did play EO1 Untold on the 3DS when it came out, but lately I've been taking the DSi for the classic experience.

Have you played Nexus? That's one I have yet to play; but I hear its got EEEVVEERRYYTHING

Are there any good open-world PVE zombie games? Less "Left 4 dead" and more "Rust but it's zombies and also a 19-year-old isn't going to kill you and steal all your shit immediately"
I was gonna say Deadside but it doesn't have zombies. It's DayZ with no zombies and not as bullshit when it comes to loot and things. It has PvE servers but like I said it doesn't have Zombies.

Suroundead is a blocky/voxel style game that seems to be what you're looking for.

I'm honestly not a big game player nowadays, I probably average 5-8 hours a week but I've purchased hundreds of games on steam, a lot of retro platformers, horror titles, rpgs and some other stuff, so I thought I would throw up a bunch of mini reviews to people might know what's good and what to avoid.

Slay the Princess - I fell for the reviews of this shit. Not really a game it's a visual novel and not a very interesting one. Avoid.

Celeste - A classic puzzle platformer. Very challenging. I made fun of the (slight) lesbian undertones in parts of the game while I was playing it and I looked it up later and of course one of the creators was trans. Still worth the buy.

Super Meat Boy - Another classic puzzle platformer but this one sucks. Most of the challenge is not neccessarily from the levels but the jankyness of how the player moves and the physics. This is the wrong kind of challenge.

The End is Nigh - Puzzle platformer by the same guy that did Super Meat Boy. This one is a lot more fun. Really hard. I've made it about half way through.

Eclipsium - A really cool game with an otherworldly vibe that I guess is technically a horror game but it's more of a puzzle journey. Worth checking out.

Kingdom Two Crowns - a retro side scroller strategy game with basically zero mechanics. You build fortifications and armies up so that they can fight off demons at night. Simple but good.

Loop Hero - This is one of those games that plays itself as you repeat the same progressions over and over again. I am not a fan.

Vampire Crawlers - Another game that kinda plays itself not really loving it so far.

Fran Bow - This is a classic point and click horror adventure about a girl locked in an insane asylum and her imaginary world. I don't play many point and click games but the story is charming and pulls you in.

Cyber Shadow - sort of a futuristic ninja gaiden metroidvania. Really fun play but incredibly difficult. I haven't finished it yet.

The Messenger - another ninja gaiden inspired metroidvania title with meta humor that doesn't really land. Also fun but the vibes aren't as strong as Cyber Shadow. Finished this one.

Astalon Tears of the Earth - kinda a hidden jem. An 8-bit nintendo style side scroller with RPG elements where you ascend a tower to find out why your world is dying. Gotta kinda be into this sort of thing but I liked it. Moderate to easy.

Xenotilt - Arcade pinball game with multiple levels. Not sure if it's worth 20 bucks but I enjoy it.

I'll post a bunch more when I get the chance.

it's been a while but not really from what I remember? I think they sell it that way because that's a whole audience but it's really a resource stretching/sequencing thing about manipulating the map by timing your cards (or whatever they are) and the dude actually walking around is kinda incidental.

I liked it but every time I'm reminded it makes me wish there was a version of Cavernous/II with a less-insane UI. I think there's at least one shitty clone on steam but it actually makes shit worse by half-assedly adding graphics without streamlining the way you actually schedule and edit your moves.

Playing my normal naval strategy game, and the Russians decided to pick a fight with me. Ok, your funeral. A few fights later they are begging for peace as I sent most of the fleet to the bottom.

Now listen here fuckers, you WANTED this war. You ASKED for this war. You don't get to back out because you are suicidal. No no no, not until I take every inch of land around the Black Sea from you at least. Then, and only then, will I give peace a chance.

In the HD versions? They automap basic stuff like floor tiles/walls/hazards/chests, so you only need to dick with it for things like your own markers, hazards out of range that you care about recording (or important things you can judge from a distance), secret walls/shortcuts and certain puzzle floors. And maybe FOE paths? I forget.

And a shitload of ocean stuff in 3 but that's like one big extended puzzle floor.

I'm sure you can turn this off too and I was prepared to but I didn't think it detracted from anything, since the stuff you need to add is still the main stuff you'd potentially fuck up, and remained fun for puzzles probably because it spares you from getting fatigued with it by the time you get to where shit's complicated.

7 days to die is the top one. Rust has PvE zombie mod servers but they're pretty shallow and run like shit. And there's Dead Rising 2 Off The Record's sandbox mode where you just explore and fuck around with a friend without time limits.

Is there mandatory PVP? I cannot overstate how uninterested I am in having my zombie fight interrupted by somebody with 900 hours in the game with Red Bull for blood who snipes me from across the map. I have zero interest in DayZ because of the PVP.

Well i could reccomend State of Decay 1 and 2 (maybe 2 more for more QOL stuff and coop) its basically barebones(kinda) community managment in zombie apocalypse where you take over one of pre set bases and you upgrade them with additional shit (warning in 1st game you DONT get any refunds if you decide to move) game can be fun and since it has been a while both of them can be found for pretty cheap.
(they also have separate gamemodes like horde survival and shit like that if you want more of a story choose 1 but if you want customizability and shit like that choose 2)
Pic rel is how long it took me to beat both games (for 2nd game the game dosent have an "ending" like 1st its more of you decide to move to another map where zombies are harder and shit like that (i tried hardest Lethal dif and got raped immedietly so i just decided i had enough and quit))

(idk how good is coop since i never played it)
And some youtuber that is good at the game (he did solo lethal run(aka no npc help they can be usefull and shit but can also die games have rpgish elements with skills and stuff)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5jTrvyc2mM (here is max dif challenge where he has 11 irl hours to destory plague hearts (basically zombie spawners) no boons (basically buffs kinda hard to explain) no legacy characters (basically new game+ characters that are maxed out and provide buffs) and no other "crutches" i used to watch him but he is mainly livestreamer which is annoying)

In 7 days to die? It's a PvE game first and foremost with focus on fighting off increasingly harder zombies. Most servers are PvE, too with trading via vending machines and QoL mods. PvP is very niche in that game, I think it's also disabled by default. I do recommend to play on a local server though as you don't have to worry about rules, wipes, pre-looted structures etc. And you can tweak a million settings to your likings, like making zombies walk instead of sprinting and disabling item drops on death. It's a game you customize and play at your own pace.

Rust zombie servers have no PvP (some do in specific areas of the map) but they're really boring and run 5x worse than PvP servers due to the amount of clutter on the map. Zombie "AI" is really pathetic and you're either killing a stationary melee NPC with 5k HP that can't reach you or you stumble upon an aimhacking 50k HP "zombie" with a minigun and his followers with RPGs. Most people just do boring shit over and over like chopping 1 million wood per day and treat the server as if its VRChat. It's really trash, don't bother.

Basically you add the monster units/towns onto the map which is just a loop and then your guy circles around and fights until you progress to the next map or you die.

It's literally a progression treadmill with a tiny bit of strategy due to when and what type of units you place.

I really don't like the trend that a lot of games are going in being minimal interaction idle progression treadmills and/or gambling simulators with generic rewards.

You convinced me to at least pick up the 3rd game on Steam; installed the Font fix from gamebanana and now we're rippin. Cheers

I wonder if the "games are art" crowd are secretly creaming their jeans over the fact that theyve won in this media hellscape we find ourselves in. Not that games have elevated themselves but more so that every other piece of media have degraded so thoroughly that vidya are starting to have more interesting and fleshed out narratives than 99% of the schlock being put out, even the artsy tripe

Has anyone actually played Mina the Hollower?

It doesn't look bad, but there's this veneer of toxic positivity all around it that concerns me, and the meat of iconic clips and stuff like that isn't there underneath it. Like this game is getting a default glazing anywhere you look, but it feels like it's Blast Havers praising the game for their supposedly-good experience rather than people actually showing their iconic moments.
