Is it cheesy? Yes, but at least it's cheese is earnest. Last we saw Venom (and every Raimi Spidey film after the first one) the cheesiness was because Raimi wanted to have his cake and eat it. EG: he wanted to tell a serious story but overlay it with his tongue-in-cheek style. It didn't work at all.
.
It worked great fuck you.

I like Venom's design and voice. I think the movie could work if it was a throwback to some of the zanier super hero films we got in the 2000's. Venom is already a pretty weird concept so it could maybe work. From what I see of the human bits, it looks kinda corny and awkward. So here's hoping.

He's also getting the new origin in the comic books which I would describe as "kind of weird."

It ties in to Thor, oddly enough. I'll take it over that sparkly pacifist race shit though.
So what's the new origin? I stopped reading Marvel comics after Superior Foes of Spiderman ended and Black Cat was made into a stupid Mob boss

Wait was that Anti-Venom attacking Venom?

They were created by this fucko named Knull. He's Some evil dark god that predates the universe. In the past the Godkiller Gorr found his sword (apparently the first symbiote created from the DARK PRIMORDIAL VOID) and used it to fuck up much of the pantheon. Apparently before he was originally killed, Knull used the sword to decapitate a celestial, and its head ended up becoming Knowhere from GoTG.

Because Venom was created by Todd McFarlane, who's the guy who made Spawn. And it's kind of obvious this movie is trying to go for his version of Venom.
Unless if you meant the CGI by that.
I wasn' talking about the style, I was talking about the CGI. To me, it just looks awfully fake and bad.

Yeah, Tom Hardy is 5'9". He's been running on pure personality for some of his roles because he sure doesn't have the stature.
I kinda disagree. Hardy can be pretty physically imposing, like in Lawless or The Dark Knight Rises. I'm sure they gave him platform shoes to make him taller, but he can still be the big tough guy. Hell, I didn't even know he was 5'9" until you told me, so that's gotta count for something.

Now in this movie he seems smaller, but part of me thinks that was the point, to emphasize the difference between Eddie and Venom. At least I hope it is.

Venom is officially rated PG-13, despite R-rated expectations
Tom Hardy’s Venom may not be as violent as fans had hoped

Although many fans had been hoping for an R-rated Venom film, Sony’s official page for the upcoming Venom confirms that the movie is rated PG-13.
Well so much for that ultra violent r rated Venom movie (not that it'd be good anyway).

interestingly enough, farlane's original version didnt have the pointy teeth and long tongue. those were added later.

the original design was basically the costume with a mouth slapped on it.

Well there goes any and all hopes that this obvious trainwreck would be a fun edgy R-rated trainwreck instead of a tame boring one. Gee thanks, Sony.
