Oh I didn't even think about Spider-Man not being in the trailer. I was more bummed about Venom not being in it. I mean you see Eddie Brock and the symbiote, but no Venom.
This movie is divorced from the MCU and Tom Holland's incarnation of Spiderman. The only way you'll see Spidey is if Sony does something retarded like using this movie to launch another Spider cinematic universe or bring back Garfield.

I haven't read comics since the 90's. Has his backstory changed that much? It used to be fairly straightforward. Eddie suffered a bunch of misfortunes accidentally caused by Spiderman and hated him. The symbiote was jilted by Spiderman and hated him. Boom. Venom. Not a clusterfuck.
Hard to tell in one movie. Especially when spiderman isnt the focus character.

That's kind of the plan. If Venom and/or "Silver & Black" (Yet another attempt at Amy Pascal's dream all-female movie like Fembusters) does well, Sony could just yank Tom Holland out of the MCU and place Spider-Man in their movies. If they continue to be failures then they'd have to renew their contract with Marvel.

Sony is still desperate for their big blockbuster IP and their dream of a Spider-Man cinematic universe never truly died, they just can't use Spider-Man himself....yet.

When you lose a bet and have to read "Why I Sued Taylor Swift".

Eddie was dying from adrenal cancer, Spiderman got the suit during the Secret Wars but didn't know it was alive until he brought it back to Earth, then you have Spiderman's discovery of what the symbiote hopes to achieve, Mr Fantastic discovering how to fight the suit, and Peter ultimately tearing it off at the church bells . If you tell that story then you're going to end up with a Spiderman story.

Word on the street is that Tom Holland was seen on set as Peter Parker but not Spiderman (they're very clear about that). My guess is that Venom will be his own franchise, divorced from the MCU and other Sony shenanigans. Maybe it'll start as a one-off but continue if it's received well.

Tom Holland being in this complicates the MCU but helps Venom.

Generic trailer. Have a feeling they're saving the best till the release. I'm also hoping it goes the Deadpool route and goes R-rated and violent, Politically incorrect, etc. It's that audience that'll likely come to this film.

I also think Sony could add T.H's Spiderman into this given they still hold the rights to making Spiderman films, so making their own little universe maybe in their minds.

this movie should have been made 10 years ago, Now it's a bit too late. And also calling it venom doesnt make any sense, since this is an origin story, but is completely unrelated to spiderman.

didnt eddie get cancer a while after he became venom? I remember he sold his costume in an auction, when his health got worse.

The suit was keeping his cancer in check but eventually it didn't want Eddie as a host anymore so he sold it. His cancer was cured and he became Anti-Venom (Yeah, I know) and then he was Toxin and now I think he's back to being Venom. Him and the suit are constantly being reshuffled because nothing sticks.

Venom's entire motivation is fighting street thugs and getting back at peter for fucking over his career, and also for spiderman tossing away the little goo alien that copied his suit for the sole reason that it was alive.
I haven't followed marvel comics too closely in years so I had no clue that the edgy cancer plot was a thing, only that everyone that uses the suit is now called venom for some reason.

With no scenes of venom fucking around with spidey, what's the point?
