Venom’s been out for 3 days and made 100 million. Best opening of the pandemic. I don’t really care about this movie, but it’s nice to see it upstage Disney.
Ironically the only reason the movie is in theatres is because of Disney putting Shang-Chi in theatres and that doing well. Pretty funny in a way how it bites them back

Isnt the Spider-Man movies Sony with Disney/Marvel involvement?

It's been a while since I've cared, but didn't Sony put a ton of pressure on Disney for the continued use of Spider-Man in the MCU after Endgame?

I guess all that pressure was probably for the use of Raimi/ASM characters and nu-Venom would have been included in that deal. Still I never heard what exactly the agreement was that got the deal extended.

So……. no Maximum Carnage then? Pussies.

He could be Sony’s big ticket, he’s the “biggest deal” of Spidey’s rouges and more importantly he mocked J.Jonah’s son for being a furry.

I liked it, really nice to have a good time at the movies again.

Could it have been R? Absolutely, but I really dig the tone, presentation and grit of it. Really got the feeling the lack of blood forced them to be more creative. feels like a bigger budget, better written early 2000's superhero movie. AKA its actually good and not marvel samey.

Id bet money they bring him back with multiverse shit.

He frequently bounces back from much worse than what he got, getting ripped in half (in space,) being sliced to ribbons, vaporized, separated then killed individually, being connected to the New York electrical grid and even being banished to hell. Carnage and Cassidy always come back, it’s due mostly to their perfect bond. Something that the movie went out of it’s way NOT to show.

BTW I could’ve sworn I saw Knull’s symbol in Cletus’s cell.

I do agree on the early 2000s vibe, made me feel a bit homesick tbh.

It was okay, more of the same of the first one both in terms of content and quality. Genuinely have no strong opinion on it one way or the other.

Saw this the other night and honestly, I wouldn't bother. This is pass the time on TV one evening if you've nothing to do level of movie. Your time would be better spent reading a good book. 80% of the movie seemed to be nothing but lead up to the final fight. Which by the time it arrived I was... "eh."

There were two points I laughed in the whole thing, one of which was in the trailer: "Uh-oh. That's a red one" and the other right after it.
Venom: "Time to die"
Eddie: "That's the spirit."
Venom: "No, I mean us. We are going to die".

Venom's voice actor remains the best thing in it. Followed by the actress who plays Eddie's ex who is barely in it but a good enough actress that she stands out. Actually, that's not entirely fair - others in it are good actors but they don't really get to act in this. Woody Harrelson can be good but this was just a reprise of his character in Natural Born Killers only without the script or Oliver Stone directing to add weight to it. We never really see any backstory for him that actually lends FEAR to the character. Shriek I don't even know what the point of her was. We're given all this set up for her which makes her look like a wronged and innocent victim, only for when she does get out to realise that frankly, they were right to lock her up and throw away the key.

There's no depth to the film. The closest being when Venom abandons Eddie and goes to a Halloween party by himself. Nothing is explored. WHY is Carnage "a red one" and why does that scare Venom? I don't know - it's just one more question the film throws out there and doesn't answer. Like Cassidy's life. Someone said up-thread that the reason Carnage is so dangerous is that he and Cassidy are so perfectly in-tune. Well that's pretty much the opposite in this movie. In fact, it's a theme that Venom+Eddie is better than them because they're actually in sync and real partners. Could have fooled me.

I hope the above is okay without spoilers. I'll put my actual summary of the film's plot itself in spoilers. But in my own opinion, I doubt it would actually make any difference. This this is predictable as the Sun rising (but a lot less majestic).

Venom and Eddie argue.
Eddie is invited to interview Cassidy in prison for no reason (Cassidy doesn't know about Venom).
Cassidy bites Eddie and like a reverse vampire gets his own symbiote.
Eddie and Venom argue more and split up.
Cassidy kidnaps Eddie's ex to make him suffer (unclear motives - Carnage says they have to kill Venom to be safe)
Eddie and Venom defeat and kill Carnage+Cassidy.

That really is pretty much it. There's this Shriek character who is deeply unlikeable and has no meaningful impact on the plot at all. Seriously, remove her and nothing is different at the end. The entire thing is meant to be some dramatic build up to a climax. But there's no character development, no interest. You do get to see Venom at a party.

Mid-credits Spiderman tie-in:
Venom and Eddie are chilling on holiday in a beach hut. Venom remarks that the Symbiotes memories / mind exist across multiple universes. He offers to show Eddie this. They then either perceive or are in the MCU just as J. Jonah Jameson reveals Spiderman's identity on TV. Venom snarls at the TV and says "THAT guy" at Peter's photograph they are showing. Resume credits.

Frankly, that mid-credits scene is the only thing in it that meant anything to me.

Shriek is only there cause of Maximum Carnage I bet.

I'd rather have had Carrion, Demogoblin or Doppleganger.
I would’ve preferred the “family” saved for the inevitable third one. Though Sony is not known for patience or self control.

BTW why did Andy Serkis direct this? Does he have any credentials or is he just one of Avi’s pals?

I’m surprised no one has mentioned the director of Venom 2 has said that Eddie and Venom had a coming out scene in the movie. In comic canon, they were lovers, but I’m just surprised he brought it up. Well. At least tumblr is happy.

Edit: It is now R-rated in Hungary for “Homosexual Propoganda” KekW

I didn't care for the first one, but I might check the sequel out one day.

One question, though: Is there a shitty Eminem song for the end credits?

In a strange way for me, I liked the lack of backstories because I'm getting sick and tired of 2 hour, 30 minute movies. Venom 2 got right to the point, had its big action scenes, and was done in 90 minutes. For the most part, we kinda know or sense who these characters are already, so let's just get on with it.

I don't know, maybe I was just in the mood for a popcorn movie, but I liked the fact that it got right to it and then ended. More movies honestly need to be 90 minutes.

What comics are you reading? Venom was a metaphor for drug addiction and schizophrenia, these days him and Eddie have a “buddy cop” bit.

You realize they’ve been popping the little bastards out since the 90s? This isn’t new, Symbiotes split off into a new one asexually.
It’s not asexual. Brock and venom are explicitly pregnant via both of them. I know about Riot, Toxin, Carnage, Anti-Venom, Phage, Agony, Scream, and Lash-Whip. Their method of creation was different.

Now that is funny, I read this shit in the collected volumes and had no idea about this.

Don’t you just love how toothless the symbiote is now? Makes me long for the Ultimate days, now that Venom was an absolute unit.

You don’t wanna long for ultimate days. Wolverine watching his children Quick Silver and Scarlet Witch having sex (yeah, they’re HIS children AND incestous in Ultimate), so I’d rather not. The only good part of ultimate was Spider-Man. And personally? I prefer original timeline (616) better.

Well I grew up in the golden age of Ultimate, video games, animated movies and the comics that were wayyyy too much for my young mind.

Plus Ultimates 1-2 and Ultimate Spider-Man is still some of Marvel’s best work to date, the grit is a bit much but that was a side effect of that funny thing that happened in New York. I never read Ultimate X-Men but I do know about Ultimate Logan being a sexpest, during one of the Ultimate Spider-Man annuals him and Peter switch bodies and after that day is over Mary Jane says.

“Peter, about that thing from this morning, maybe we should wait until we’re older.”
