Well, if this is to be believed, https://thegamehaus.com/gaming/will-the-steam-machine-be-upgradable/2025/11/21/ the steam machine can apparently be upgraded, but only partially. The CPU and the GPU can't be upgraded, for example and that's a bit of a problem. That's why I say it isn't worth one thousand US dollars. If it was 600$ or 700$, I'd have a different opinion.
What do you mean it's not upgradeable?

What, you don't have a $500 reballing station and advanced knowledge of micro soldering and electronics to resolder your own CPU and RAM? I bet you haven't even upgraded the ram on your steam deck. Pathetic.

Stick to your fagtendo and gaysation, stalker child :smug:

I wonder: how can a microPC with SteamOS installed compare to a GabeCube?
If the video I posted on the last page is any indication at all, probably roughly comparable, maybe a little worse? Probably not bad enough that the GabeCube is worth the 1000$ price tag though.

Furthermore, to steelman my own argument slightly, there are pre-built gaming PCs that are comparable to the Steam Machine/Gabecube for less money spent as well.

This right here, for example. https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/pc-gaming/pre-built-gaming-pc-deals-cheaper-steam-machine
I reiterate that the current price for the Steam Cube is a mistake, and I fully expect them to be on sale for less than 1000$ within a year or two. And even furthermore, let's say you have 1000$ to burn on PC gaming related things for whatever reason and you already have a gaming PC. Given that qualifier, why would you spend 1000$ on the cube when you can spend 1000$ on upgrades instead?

You can definitely get a much better deal elsewhere but will it have the same tiny form factor and, more importantly for a living room PC, HDMI CEC?

I'm upset because you know memory prices are going to go up again very soon, so everyone unable to buy the first wave of Steam Machines will be facing a $200+ increase when it's their time to order if Valve decides it's worth it making more of them

Makes me wish someone made DIY cases or simpler-to-make cases for a Steam Deck-like, pretty much the only things I've seen for it take expert-level soldering like you're trying to put a modchip on a Switch or something.

Is the Steam Frame released yet... I wanna pet the dogs as a hobo on the streets :(

For what the Steam Machine is worth, if you're gonna waste money on something, you could spend the extra money and get a Framework Desktop. Yes, it's a terrible deal, but it will beat Valve's offering in everything but noise.

Pushing a button on a remote to switch inputs is too much for you?

Gabeslaves have given up all self-respect.
There are cheap dongles you can buy that can add CEC function to basically any PC.

Imagine paying a $1k premium for something a $30 dongle can do.

I'd be interested in seeing more comprehensive testing when people get their hands on the gabe cube but it looks like in some games the steam machine barely edges out one of those BC250 boards people were ghetto rigging into gaming PCs last year.

Imagine getting dunked on by a $150 dumpstered crypto miner. Steamiest on suicide watch.

I'm going to say what most of you "you're paying the Valve tax" posters need to hear: you sound like an insufferable faggot and need to shut the fuck up.

"Oh, you can't upgrade it!"
The people buying it don't care.
"Oh, you can throw together a bunch of e-waste and get decent performace."
The people buying it don't care.
"Oh, but I just want people to not waste their money!"
The people buying it don't care.

The people buying it want system that they can take out of a box, put under their TV, push a button, and start gaming.

The Steam Machine costs even more than PS3 at launch, which was widely mocked for its' price back when it was released. Mind you, $599 was for the best PS3 model (60GB), so the calculation below needs to be compared to the 2TB version with a controller bundled which is $1428.

Even if we cope and pick the base version for both ($499 for the PS3 and 512GB + controller for the Steam Machine) it is still more expensive since the base version with a controller is $1128:

It's simply overpriced. It might not be 100% Valve's fault that it costs so much, but at the same time that doesn't make it a better offering either.

To be fair though a good graphics card in 2006 was like $250 and today a 5080 is $1000.

The Wii came out at $250 and a Xbox 360 arcade bundle was out shortly after for $280, and hey you could get a DS for $130. Meanwhile a PS5 now starts at $600 and a Switch 2 at $630.

Prices for anything game related are unacceptable today.

Edit: and personally currency effects make that even more insane right now because the US dollar is very strong. Where I could reasonably buy an 8800 GT for around $250 in Canadian dollars in 2007, the cheapest I can find a 5080 for right now is $1769. That's more than my mortgage.
