Well to be honest DeSantis was a mooooron. He had undisputed control of fucking Florida and got greedy for the Presidency instead of just waiting for 2028. Now Vance gets to be Trump's heir and DeSantis is left with nothing.

He jumped in at the height of his popularity, while Covid restrictions were fresh on everyone's mind, right after a year signing tons of legislature that MAGA loves. It was also a time when Trump was still racking up new charges, getting thrown off ballots, and was facing jail time before the convention.

I can't blame DeSantis for trying. It was both the right time to try, and the wrong time to bet against a longshot Trump comeback.
