I don’t get what Trump is trying to do. Blockading the strait isn’t going to make the cowardly insurance companies sign permission slips to let people cross the strait. Gas prices aren’t getting fixed. There’s no political benefit there. On the military side, it doesn’t make sense when America already has the ability to wipe out internal infrastructure which would be far more devastating to Iran than blocking trade, with the benefit that it wouldn’t impact other countries (which a blockade can do).

Maybe someone can explain the strategy. It seems like Trump wants to stop fighting in misguided thinking that Americans are opposed to fighting in the long-term and a ceasefire is enough to improve sentiment. I don’t think they actually are in general. They are opposed to fighting when it a) leads to higher gas prices or b) there isn’t a clear, long-term objective.

Trump needs NATO to get involved if he's going to have the leverage of continuing the war as long as he feels necessary. NATO is how Obama bombed Libya for 9 months straight without Congress even paying attention until we ran out of bombs and he had to beg them for more bomb money.

Closing the strait is to force NATO's involvement.
