And the rest weren't killed they were just sent to a prison full of soul sucking demons which is totally better and more humane than just executing them.
also off topic, but yes, they are considered sentinel animals. Llamas can do the same. My granddad used to have a donkey named Babe that watched his sheep. He was a mean friggin donkey (to 5 year old me, anyway) but we found several remains of coyotes that he had stomped into a literal cartoon pancake. Plus, donkeys can live for decades. I know a guy locally who has a donkey that is at least 35 years old.
