The issue with degrees and loan debt is almost entirely one of skill. If you are a loser with no skills no degree can help you. If you are intelligent and skilled but lack the background/connections to just jump into a good job than a degree and building connections at a university can help push you over the edge to get a job.

Literally take on debt no more than half of what you would expect to make in a job from that degree. Be realistic about how smart you are. If you weren’t the smartest one in your class in your podunk high school you’re not gonna make it. If you got ‘straight As’ but weren’t actually the smartest and some punkass kid in the back smoking is actually way smarter, you’re not gonna make it (he is). If the number doesn’t make sense, you don’t do that degree. It’s simple.

I wasted my twenties on a total bullshit PhD and did two hard career pivots after grad school to get my life on track. I have no sympathy for anybody who just sits down and cries because their 4-year-degree didn't immediately land them where they wanted. I didn't even have a real income until I was in my thirties.

My best friend in the neighborhood as a kid had an older brother who ended up going to MIT for a PHD. He thought he was destined to be a tenured academic at MIT. Took his ass 8 years to finish that PHD and he already had a Master's/Undergrad from Vanderbilt. Never got the professorship and went on to work in the private sector doing some science shit. That is when I first learned how long PHDs take to get and it shocked me.

This dude is salty about not being in academia and makes less than I do as a rank and file developer, albeit a very senior one.

The least important part of college are the classes.
